The Over Sixty Crowd... Again

I've noticed about 90% of the gate at major tournaments, big action matches, and invited tournaments in the states are 60 and over. IMO only legal gambling on pool followed by live on TV will get pool pumped back up. Nothing will grow with a fan base like this. A good pool movie W/O the dumping and drugs in it wouldn't hurt either. I see the same over 60 crowd at U.S Open 9 ball, TS, Make it happen, the DCC to some extent, and other pay to get in pool stuff. Johnnyt

When snooker reached it's peak in popularity in Britain, much of the TV audience
consisted of house wives who couldn't hit the end rail.
Younger, and active, players would rather play than watch.

I agree with you on both counts, I've been saying for years that if gambling on pool was legalized and sanctioned it is the ticket that could have people that aren't interested in pool become interested because they could wager on it. Follow that up with info about the players that the viewers can identify with their favorites that they wager on and you have a fan base that may never play but have a vested interest none the less. Unfortunately there all always the naysayers that blame gambling for the negative image of pool instead of embracing it as it's never going away.

If remote betting were allowed and caught on big, dumping would follow.

A worthy demographic

I agree that the over 60 crowd is a very important demographic in pool and I like to refer to it as the base. I think every pool room needs this base as a part of its customers. They play during the day want to be home at night when other players are getting off work and gearing up the fun. I think the over 60 crowd will always be important and they will bet on matches between themselves. Now to me the answer is how do we connect and keep them happy while we are finding ways to get younger folks involved.

How about rooms having wait staff that actually acknowledges their existence and, you know, waits on them with some teeny tiny bit of respect? That just might work as a start.

But I'm the crazy one around here,

They actually have to order something besides coffee, and remember to tip more than 15 cents.

I think if you have a demographic that has money and wants service you would be right. I have seen places that didn't have wait staff that were able to offer value with convenience that didn't have waitresses. Payroll can be a double edged sword in many ways.

60+ people have already raised their families and/or they are retired or semi-retired and have the time and the funds to attend pool events that go on for days at a time.

I don't know how you would regulate the players with regards to gambling.
