DCC- Worth the Trip?

A friend of mine who is a professional player went to the DCC for the first time last year. He also likes to gamble alot. He invited me to go last year but I couldn't due to finanacial troubles. I told him that I might try to go in '07.

When he came back, he told me it was one of the worst experiences he ever had. After what he told me, I don't think it's worth me spending the money to go. First and foremost, he said that the food was absoloutely horrible. He said that they basically serve you garbage on a plate, and charge incredibly high prices for the horrid food. He told me that outside places to eat are really inconvenient. Then he told me about the stink bombs. He said the whole place reiked of them. One of the younger kids who plays at the DCC went around with a bunch of his friends throwing them everywhere. People knew who they were, but nothing was done about it. Another problem was that some of the worst low-life people would come out of the woodworks. Not really poolplayers, but you would see druggies and drug dealers everywhere. Speed and coke are a popular drug in pool (obviously), but he said that he saw so many cracked out people it was ridiculous.

He was excited to go, but when he came back, he said it was a waste of time and money (although he did place high enough in a few divisions to pay for his expenses and a little extra). He said it was a bad experience for him, even though he won.

My question is, was it really that bad there? Is the food that horrible, and did the entire place smell like sulfur for a few days? I don't know if I'd be able to stand it. Are the people there that bad too?

Aside from seeing great pool, are there any big positives to making the trip? It sounds like they don't give a damn about the pool players, if they are going to make crappy food, allow stink bombs to be tossed everywhere, and not have good security personell. I'm not trying to bash the DCC, I am honestly wondering if it's really worth going to.

I think it is well worth the experience. The food isnt the greatest. However it isn't bad either. There are local restaraunts near by that are easy to get to. Most of them are of the fast food variety. Also keep some snacks in your room. Get a room with a fridge. Keep cold cuts etc in there. That is what me and my wife do each year.
As for the stink bombs. I dont see it being a problem this year.Last year someone got an overzealous and had to much fun. That person who believed to have been one of the was talked to by the powers that be. So I think that will cut that down and almost out.
As for the low life people, they are everywhere. I think the security Greg and the hotel provides is great in helping out. Also unfortunately you have to realize this happens where there is a market for the product. So to say there weren't any at all would be naive.I didnt see alot of cracked out people.
After ten days straight of no sleep, we all look a little bad.lol
So Im not sure what your friend is speaking about. But I dont know his opinion of alot either.
I dont feel DCC is bad. I think it is one of the greatest experiences pool related you can have. But thats just my opinion. I think the best thing would be to go ahead and go and judge yourself. That way you can be your own judge about the whole thing.Let us know if you go and how you liked or didn't like DCC. Greg Sullivan is always trying to improve so he listens to both sides, postitive and negative.

It's not that bad. It's not bad. The stink bomb was not the norm. The biggest complaint is the availability of food next to the tournament site. But, as far a food goes, the restaurant isn't bad. It's not gourmet, and it's not five star. It's country, comfort food. But, eating the same type of food for days on out can get tiresome.

The other complaint is the parking. If you decide to leave the place with your car to find better food, you most likely will lose your spot.

The positives supremely outweigh these negatives. Besides... Timberly will be there and I will be there. What more positives does anyone need???

The food at the restaurant isn't the greatest, and there was the occasional stink bomb. But the DCC isn't about the food and it's not a suit and tie formal. It's about pool and ACTION, ACTION and ACTION. I can stay there for a week and eat nothing but hotdogs and bologna sandwiches, and be satisfied. If your offended at the site of the occasional drunk person, or prostitute. Stay home. If you're a fan of pool, then I think you owe it to yourself to experience the Derby at least one time. It seems to me that your buddy is some what of a prude. Too good to associate with the common pool player, and the people that hang out in all the rooms around the world.

The DCC is the best experience anyone could ask for! I've been for the last 5 years, and won't miss one in the future. Granted the food might be a little expensive, but then again we don't have to leave for it. There are plenty of nice steak houses within 10 minutes. I think some of us are forgetting that there are around 1000 people there during the week. The hotel could do better, but I've been overall pleased with my experience. I've been to Vegas, and would rather be at the Derby any day of the week over Sin city. You can bet whatever you want, see all the pros, and then drive 30 minutes to Caesars if you desire. I would tell anyone to go......chance of a lifetime!!!!!!

I agree. I've been to Derby once & Vegas once. I had a much better time at Derby and will do whatever I can to ensure that I make it to every one from here on out. Vegas... someday again but I'm not going to put forth the effort that I do to get to Derby. ;)

IMO, it's worth it. To each his own though.

Anytime the crack heads and lowlifes are getting too you just take a look at Williebetmore. His appearance tends to make even the most hideous looking characters seem normal.

It’s all part of the rich pageant of the billiard community.

LOL, thanks for the laugh Fred!

Is it worth going to?

Yes. If you care just even a little bit about pool, you must go. It is not only the biggest and bestest event in pool, with every passing year it gains in legendary status. Years from now these DCC events will be looked back upon with the same historical importance and personal fondness we now collectively accord Johnston City.

Not only does anyone and everyone with a modest amount of change in their pockets get the opportunity to actually play against world champions, living legends, road agents, shortstops, and just men and women that love pool, you can sit in the stands listening to Buddy Hall comment on a money match, eat breakfast next to Nick Varner, or run into Earl Strickland in the elevator. Banks, 1pocket, 9ball, 14.1, and 3C. Good grief -- 3C!! All played on the finest equipment available. There truly is something for everyone, including a hallway full of vendors selling just about anything and everything pool to include cue repair services by some of the finest mechanics in the country. And if action is what you’re looking for: anyone can get a game for anything.

Have there been growing pains? Yes -- but the kinks are fewer every year.

Are there distractions, like ladies in purple running around giving “hotel tours” -- you bet ;-) love ‘em or leave ‘em.

Does the food suck: yes -- so get in your car and in 10-15 minutes you can be at a Ruth Chris’s, The Napa River Grill, or get almost anything else you crave.

The Derby City Classic really is a classic. You must go.

Lou & breakup summed it up best. ;)

If you're going to make your decision by other people's opinion (your friend) then you should realize that there's more positive said about the DCC than there is negative. Your friend is the 1st person I've heard of as not liking it. I'm sure there's a few more out there but I would confidently say that they're in the minority.

One persons trash is another persons treasure. My advice is to give it a try. If you don't like it, you never have to go back... you can even leave early if you want to. Me? I kicked myself in the a$$ for not being in the pool world for the 8 yrs prior to last yr and missing all those events in yrs past. :(

Yes its worth it.Yeah foods ok ?Breakfast is the best .Get a room with a fridge and bring your own .Just up the street is MCDs and Taco Bell .Behind MCDs is a mom and pop deli .That have good and BIG sandwichs and on sat,sun they bbq and you need to researve a slab if want to get some .There that good 10 or 12 $ gets you a full slab and 2 sides if i remember rite ? you can also go to the other hotel (exec inn) across the street and eat they say its better .You can always get delivery to break up the constent resturant food .

Nothing is forever. For you younger folks if you don’t experience DCC at least once, thirty or forty years from now you will wish you had when you had the chance.

The first 2 years I went to DCC, We took 2 coolers and an assortment of food and drinks. When I go to tournaments, I go to make money. I will eat out occasionally, but I can survive without spending a lot of money on food.
As for the crackhead comment, they're everywhere in the world anymore, but I don't recall seeing anyone in particular and saying,"there's a crackhead. There are a lot of people who walk around in a daze because of a lack of sleep. There is always something going on.
It's said already, but you should go if at all possible and experience this GREAT event. My 2 main vacations each year are DCC, and the VNEA event in Vegas. It just don't get any better.
Plus now, we have the AZ/1P room.

It's the best thing going in pool, period. IMO

Where else can you see the vast majority of the top pros in one room and be able to walk just down the hall and watch a couple of roadies duke it out for the big cash. You can sweat bet the action or just be a casual observer. There are many reasons to make the trip to Louisville and if bad food or seeing the occasional whore are the worst that happen to you then all is well. It is definitely worth the trip.

Whores at DCC?

Where we they hanging out; they didn't have any polish or italian sausage at the snack stand?

It ain't a four star hotel and the food is fast food quality, but the pool action is pure gold. If you truly like to see good pool played, then this is the right spot. If you are worried about rubbing shoulders with a few outlaws and rounders, then stay away.

I would occasionally walk across the street to the bowling alley, which has a little coffee shop, that sells good burgers and pie. I wasn't going to tell anyone, so keep it under your hat, and we can go together.

My biggest concern is always the weather. It is mid Winter and this is a Northern climate. I just pray for the best. We've been fairly lucky most years, with no major storms coming in.

Yes, 3C! Paul Frankel managed to fill the first two 15-player events and added an 8-player quicky for the overflow. There's a waiting list. Last year, Jeanette Lee tied for high run honors with a 7.

Also, for those who haven't seen 14.1 before, I think I can guarantee they'll see a 100-ball run on tough equipment.

I could have gone to Johnston City in the 60s. I really wish I had. I missed the chance.

The hotel is not the Venetian and the food is not gourmet. The beds are comfortable, there is closed circuit TV from the TV table, and the restaurant is usually buffet style so you can probably find something to eat.
