Statement on Ronnie Alcano Case

Without prejudging the complaint against our double world pool champion Ronnie Alcano, I believe he and his image are being roasted live and unfairly in the coals of publicity and sensationalism.
Nothing has been presented in this case that deserves the kind of publicity it is getting or should lead us to doubt Ronnie’s integrity and good name. All that has happened is that his daughter and estranged wife have filed a complaint of sexual abuse against him before the Quezon City prosecutor’s office. There has been no preliminary investigation of the charge. And there is no way of knowing at this point whether the complaint has any basis or is just a case of harassment.
On the other hand, based on our inquiry into the case, we have learned some not-so-pleasant facts about what may be behind the complaint. There were attempts to get money from Ronnie and his manager, Mr. and Mrs. Perry Mariano that were unsuccessful. And there is the rather mind-boggling claim that the alleged incidents allegedly happened over three months ago, soon after he shot to fame and fortune after winning the World Pool Championship.
Ronnie Alcano is not just another citizen of our country. He is an authentic sports hero and celebrity. He has won great honor for our country and our people, not only once but twice. It is an unfortunate fact that celebrities oftentimes become the target of all kinds of suits and complaints, be it for money or publicity or out of envy.
In the midst of his present ordeal, we in the billiards community will not turn our back on Ronnie Alcano. We express our full support and confidence in him. And we believe everyone should rally behind this authentic Filipino hero who made us all proud to be Filipinos.
