are you going to learn that the hassles with playing Pool in bars is not worth it. I quit going to bars long ago, have been a couple of times for a tournament, and it always turns out the same, so I don't anymore.

Tournaments in bars are hit and miss anyway because of how they are usually run, and although the bar wants new patrons, they seem to get pissed when an 'outsider' wins the tournament. Why are bar owners so damn
naive when 2 drinks today can put you over the legal limit for driving?
Do they expect you to buy 50 bags of potato chips? Plus many bar owners don't have a clue as to how much they can benefit by having 4-5 of the top players in town hang out at their place on a regular basis.

I only go to bonafide Pool rooms, bars are just a problem waiting to happen.

And you should have watched your cue closer ---- Just like if you had a wife there that is a 10!!! That's on you ...

The city of Fayetteville is located directly next to Ft. Bragg which is the largest Army base in the world. I work on the base as a Federal contractor. Being it's a military town... Only thing here is bars, strip clubs, pawn shops, used car lots, and it's basically a culture wasteland. Currently the only pool tournaments are at bars. There is a nice poolhall called Little Reno that I go to but they never have tournaments. That'll change when the new place opens.

I did go to that tournament before at the strip club but it is really difficult to concentrate! Between the thumping music and the tata's everywhere... boy it's tough. It's a tough tournament as well.

A guy by the name of John McCloud runs it and plays in it. He plays pretty sporty. He ran the roads back in the day and wouldn't be surprised if some people on here know him. Keith Bennett also plays there and most know how strong he plays. Mike Davis and Wade Crane have been known to play in it.

It's always guaranteed 200 for 1st and 100 for 2nd which isn't bad. But it's race to 1 8-ball with no safeties allowed. So it's basically Russian roulette on a bar table. Wade Crane played in it a few times and never won which isn't surprising considering the format.

Race to 1 8-ball??? Hehehe. Dude, read between the lines (it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out). That is not a tournament. Your tournament fee is your price for admission to the tata club. Come to think of it, who needs a pool tournament when all those wonderful tatas are around to savour and enjoy. Pool can wait some other time.

You seem to be a nice but rather naive fellow perhaps rather new in the pool world. While the sport has made strides in changing its image and while there are decent pool playing people out there, unfortunately it is still plagued by many low lifes and losers. I have been with pool players whom I've dine with, given rides from pt. A to pt. B, borrowed money from me etc. and then asked me to play them for big money with some ridiculous handicap. Talk about returning the favor.

One of the cardinal rules with the pool cue is to never leave your beloved stick out of reach at any moment in time unattended, even when going to the bathroom. Guard it like you would your wallet or a wife/girlfriend you care about especially when you are playing in a big money match. All it takes is for somebody who is careless to mess it up or deliberately do something with it for one reason or another. Railbirds who have stakes in your game are notorious for doing this. It's synonymous to somebody breaking your arm. ;)

I was curious about that as well. That would encompass my 3 favorite things in one room. I see it as a win-win. Hell, even if the tourney only paid $10 for first place that would pay your cover charge.:)
Hey D,

That might pay mine and your cover charges, but what about what we would spend on lap dances??????????

Heh, your SO doesn't read these forums, huh, Mike?

That's so ridiculous, why would anyone use a cue that clearly belongs to someone else, nevermind whether or not you announce that you're going to do it!?

"It's ok that I stole you car because I yelled loudly to the whole block that I was going to take it for a spin."

I have the same problem with my guitar, people seem to think it's a "community instrument" or something.

I can relate, The same thing use to happen to with my Bass guitar, at a gig
drunks would always come up between sets and say "Hey man I use to play some, mind If I sit in with you? oh and can I borrow your Bass"

Solved that problem, by taking my Six string bass to gigs.

I would say, yeah go ahead, and hand then the Bass and they would just look at it, like it was some kind of monster and say " Damn man you got a 4-string" "I can't play no six string Bass"

:D

lol at least your drunks ASK, today I got "k give it here. come on lemme see 'er, what is that a yamaha? yeah that's a nice guitar lemme take it for a spin I promise I won't hurt it."

I'm a softie so I let him have it after he asked nicely, and he just looked at it like it was a rubik's cube or something, plucked two strings, and then handed it back.

Before that, I've had people just pick it up and start playing, even when it's covered by my jacket and car keys. wtf?!

Dam U got off lite!

She could have found your keys and announced see was leaving in someone elses car. Then youda really been screwed lol.

Sounds like a sure fire wingbat to me.

I too would have gone to the strip club. At least you know if you leave your stick laying around for somebody that might feel like using it you're more likely to walk out of the place with a smile.

I have had that happen also, solved that problem with a Boss LS-2
Line Switcher, I would kick it over to line 2 at the end of the set, so the signal would only go to the tuner. LOL

I would no more take a good cue into a bar than I would park my car close to the front door of a bar. You'll end up with dings/dents, at least, on both sooner or later.

King Street is now open ! It is by far the nicest pool hall that has been in Fayetteville ! You can get a game in there any time .Rumor has it that they will be having tournaments there soon .Keith shoots and works there and I have seen some hard hitters in there . I think it is going to make a killing there. We needed a place like this !!

She asked if she could use it and I said no and told her that it was an expensive cue and would rather not let someone I don't know use it. She then said if she had such an expensive cue she wouldn't let it lay around anywhere. I then said, well I would somewhat smugly, because she was being rude. So I go to grab the cue and she holds onto it for a while apparently thinking she was not going to give it up. She eventually let go of it and I took it back to my seat and she eventually used the same cue with the guy she was playing.

This passage makes me angry at just the thought of it. I don't like people using my equipment, unless I know who they are, and I lend it to them.

I rarely have that problem. On most of my gigs the drunk would have to climb over five saxes, four trombones, a Gibson ES-335, a Fender Precision Bass, a keyboard and a drum kit before he got to my horn. That's a lot of shiny enticing hardware to distract him! (Trumpet section is in the BACK of a big band).

Jazz combo gigs are a different matter. Horns are in front. I would take serious and possibly violent issue with any unauthorized person picking up my one of my horns! Heck, I might smack him with my cue!!

bar cues

I would be a little leary of bringing an expensive cue to a local bar. Some folks have no respect for other people's property. I'll usually bring a reliable, but cheap, sneaky pete to the bars.

There is no excuse for having to deal with a rude bar owner. She seems to be queering her own business.

I let someone use a brand new custom cue once at a bar and got it back with 10-huge dings and a gouge 4-inches long. That cured me early on from letting others use my sticks. I am not so worried about theft, but I am tired of people running into and knocking over cues, so I agree that a nice, but less expensive cue that you are comfortable with, is the way to go in bars. I've even tried to set my cues 20 or more feet away from everyone and they still get knocked over buy some drunk dancing around the bar. I draw the line at $750.00. It is fun however, taking nice cues into the pool hall on a weekend morning and letting knowledgeable people look at them, and talk about cues, I really enjoy that part of cue collecting.

Tonight I went to a local bar here in Fayetteville called Louie's that has an 8-ball tournament. Small place with bad tables and a crazy woman who owns it. But it's usually a decent size tournament, has an 8-ball pot, and a 9-ball break-and-run pot. I've been going there since I moved here about 3 months ago and a lot of my friends that I've met from pool frequent that tournament. And the only other place with a tournament that night is at a strip club.

So about halfway thru the tournament I am talking with some friends while I wait for my next match and overhear a lady who owns the bar saying something to the TD that she was using someone else's cue while she played her match. I look at the cue she has and I see my Richard Black one-of-a-kind cue that she is using! I go up to her and tell her that that is my cue and she said that she told the TD and that he made an announcement that she was using someone's cue which I apparently did not hear.

I end up winning the tournament and after that I am sitting around with a few friends who are playing and having a drink. She then comes up to me and starts telling me that she made the announcement again, twice that she was using someone's cue. I told her that I did not hear her and that it was alright, no big deal. She then proceeds to say that since I embarrassed her in front her friends that I needed to get my ass out and don't come back. I'm floored at this point. Totally surprised. I am a pretty laid back individual who never tries to cause any problems. When she said that I proceeded to tell her she runs a shitty business and that don't worry I'll never come back here.

More than a few times that lady has been totally rude to people that go there and pay to play pool and have drinks. She scolded everyone that went there about not showing up on time in a very rude and demeaning way. An older friend who has an appliance business had a trailer on his truck that was hit while it was in the parking lot and it damaged the trailer and the bumper of his truck by a friend of hers. The guy didn't even have his headlights on and she had the audacity to say he shouldn't have had his truck parked that way and it was his fault.

So basically I am just pissed at the nerve of the owner and wanted to vent. Take it for what it's worth.

I know that bar! I spent 3 years in Fayettnaum!

You ought to check out a couple of the local pool halls, and check out the APA leagues and tournaments around there. Trust me there are a few of them there.

I used to frequent the Palimeno, the Yellow Rose (whole in the wall with $3 pitchers!), and the House of Dolls! Those were my main hang outs, but I bet I played in every damn bar in Fayetteville while I was there.

PM me if you would like to know more.

Sorry about your problems with that owner, but she is a little witch. LOL

Which strip club? There are several in that town, hell that town is all car dealerships and strip clubs.

And in a bar tourny you can always play safe if you know how to do it right!

It isn't the largest base in the world, simply has the biggest population. Ft. Hood here in TX is the largest, but it has less people.

King Street is one of the nicest pool halls I've ever been in and it blew me away when I first stepped inside it. A place like this in Fayetteville? Get out!

There has been a lot of action there as well. Wade Crane, Mike Davis, Sam Monday, and Scott Rayburn have all been there and have been in action.

Walt has been in there giving action to all the top players coming through and has been taking it down from what I hear.

There is also a guy another black guy named Dave who plays real strong. He played Mike Davis even 1 hole and ended up 3 games up on him.

Keith Bennett is the house pro there. He mentioned the other night that if SVB came to King Street and gave him the 7 and the last 3 he could bet whatever. Pretty sporty spot seeing how Keith beat him with the 8 at last DCC or the one before it. I don't know though, maybe Shane would like another shot.
