Louisville...A Derby City Classic Visitors Guide
By: Aaron Owens
Starting in early January, Louisville, Kentucky will be the host of one of the most intriguing pool tournaments in the United States?the Derby City Classic. The DCC, as it is commonly referred, is held at the Executive West Hotel which offers quality amenities including a restaurant, a bar, and premium rooms at a fair rate. However, many visitors to the DCC are often times looking for local attractions in town for a reasonably priced bite to eat, a few hours of non pool entertainment, or even a neighborhood pool hall for a bit of relaxing play or maybe some local Louisville action.
Louisville is filled with restaurants with some hometown appeal. One area of town that hosts tons of unique restaurants is on Bardstown Road. This area of town is noted for its ?cultural? stores, bars, and eateries. If you are a fan of world foods from Moroccan to Italian, check out Ramses? Around the World or if you are more interested in the cuisine of the locals, The Twig and Leaf may be the spot for you. The author suggests the Kentucky Hot Brown with a slice of Derby Pie for dessert. A small hookah bar offers the best eats for those with breakfast on the brain. Caf? 360 offers the cheapest sit-down breakfast in town and the only place where you can sample worldly tobaccos, have a locally brewed beer, and eat biscuits and gravy all at the same meal. The lovely thing about the Bardstown Road Area of Louisville?it is less than 5 miles from the Executive West.
If you need to get away from the pool scene for a few hours, Louisville offers many unique attractions. A tour of the Louisville Slugger Museum is always a must for a newcomer to the town. Watch how the same bats used by professional players are made during a guided tour of the factory. Were you a Muhammad Ali fan? If so, a trip to the Ali Museum could be right up your ally. After reliving the history of America?s greatest boxing legend, take a short walk to the Louisville Science Center. A couple of hours in the LSC will increase your science knowledge ten fold?and it is pretty fun as well. No homework required. All three of these local attractions can be found in Downtown Louisville and more information can be found about the museums and the restaurants at www.gotolouisivlle.com
If billiards is what you are searching for?then look no farther. Louisville is the host of numerous pool rooms that can provide you with either a leisurely afternoon of play or a place to find a bit of action. If you are looking for a bar box game, then you might want to check out Diamonds Pub on Frankfort Avenue. A room filled with Diamond bar boxes, Diamonds has a fully stocked bar, decent grub, and a host of players. Still wanting some action, but looking to bet it up a bit?check out Louisville Billiards Club on Bardstown Road. This room has turned into the premiere room in Louisville for action. Odds are you will be able to find a bank game, a nine ball game, or a one pocket match here. Is action not up your ally, but a nice friendly game of pool is? Check out Oliver?s Billiards on DuPont Circle. This room has over twenty 9 foot Olhausen Tables and you will be able to find some to play with?for free! Bank Shot Billiards, located in downtown Louisville on East Market Street, has history on its side. This is the room most notable to Louisville and it is still a jam up place to place.
