Leon Sly's Exotic Cue Line ...

I have been telling several people about the Exotic Wrapless Cue line Sly is coming out with ... He is looking to put out a line that will rival several lines of cues ... And I think this line of cues will boost him up several notches in the minds of many as a cue builder (This is my opinion)... The man is good and he does it all full splice whatever you want ... I honestly feel that Sly makes one of the best cues I have ever played with and the man is super nice to talk to and funny as hell... He builds the whole cue from scratch he is NOT a cue assembler as you may call some cue makers... I consider him a friend and feel he is truly going places as a cue builder... these cues will far exceed the 800.00 value he is asking for this first batch in the years to come .... After this first batch I don't believe you will be able to touch them for this price ...

Sly and I have been talking alot about this cue line and he has given me permission to post some pictures of some of the woods he started turning down tonight, So I get to share them with you ... Bare in mind this is only a fraction of what he is doing and only the start of Sly's exotic cue line .... These cues will come with two shafts for 800.00 , ring work and all they are going to be very , very nice ....They will be ready in September , Sly is just now starting to turn the wood on them...

Here is some of the wood he turned tonight ... He is working with Brazailian Rosewood , Tulipwood , Bolivian Rosewood ,Hawaiian Cocobolo ,Birdseye maple , Curly Maple , Olive Wood , Cocobolo and a wood I never heard of before called bubinga wood ... (guess that's right...lol...) All the woods are not pictured here as this is only what he started on tonight... Remember this is only a small example of the highly figured woods Sly can get ....

Below I am going to show you the wood Sly has set aside for my cue ... AZ'ers eat your hearts out ...lol..j/k...But you can order one from Leon or one of your choice not in the wrapless line , This is some pretty wood going into my cue .... My cue will be Brazailian Rosewood in the Butt Sleeve and Forearm... with a Olivewood handle ... And notched Ivory and Ebony ring work ... Ill leave the other details out so that the cue is original to me ... Just want to give you a idea of what we are planning for my cue ... Dang look at this wood Sly must like me ...lol... I am stoked .... Mine is the pieces of Brazailian Rosewood and the Olive wood .... the bottom piece is a piece of Bubinga wood Sly wanted to show me ...

Yep ...

I agree Kamdaswani... Leon sent me these pics last night and I asked him if I could post them here ... He was nice enough to let me show em off .. Hope you had luck in contacing him about the cues you want ...

Dang ....

Alright which one of you was trying to steal my piece of olivewood ... I getting ready to fetch my dogs on you ...lol... ;)

Wow. Leon's got a great stash of wood there!
I just recently spent some time with Leon on the phone. Based on my conversation with him, I wouldn't hesitate to buy from him. Heck of a nice guy and very friendly. I'm betting he's got fabulous customer service!
I still can't believe how nice that wood is....

Nice looking woods, especially the curly maples, but that is just me.

Marcel<---Curly Maple freak :D

Exotic cues ...

Well today Leon started coring out the butts in these cues ... He told me some of these Exotic woods move sometimes and by coring them out that should prevent the cue from any movement you might risk in an exotic line like this that was not cored out ... Plus it makes them much stronger ... I can't wait to see mine ... While I can wait but I am eager also ... But I want Leon to take his time and get mine right instead of rushing to get it done and making a mistake in haste ... I know my cue will be perfect when Leon sends it to me ... That is how Leon sends out his cues he wants them perfect and to make his customers say wow when they open the package...

Update ...

Sly's Exotic cue lines is rolling along here are some pics of the some of the wood he has cored out for the cues ... These Cues are going to be beautiful....As promised I'm doing my best to keep those of you who requested it updated.... Talked to Sly tonight and he sent me these pics and we were talking over some of the cues I am getting off him this year ... I've got a order in for 5 by the end of the year ...lol... I have my order in for one of these as I said my wood is shown in one of the posts first posts above ... These cues will be selling for 800.00 and include two shafts ... To me that seems like one heck of a bargain if you have never seen of Sly's cues they are top end, His shafts are some of the smoothest you will ever feel and his finish is among the best ... You can't beat the quality ... For me they are the best cue available and it would be wise to get one while the prices for his cues are still very reasonable... Sly is more then a up and comer and don't come crying to me if in a year or two when the price of his cues are on up there and say that I did not warn you about buying one of his cues while they were still very affordable... This line of Wrapless Exotics is going to be off the chain...

Talked to Leon last night he has these cues cored and all of them cut and the ring work done he said he is getting ready to start putting them together next week and is thinking about posting one up here just to show everyone what they are going to look like when finished ... Of course each will have it's own personality and different wood patterns ... It won't be long you better call Sly or PM him if you have any intrest he already has several pm's on them and I know Sly well enough to know he will let those who have already pm'ed him and expressed intrest have the first choice ... it is possible they may all be gone by the time he has them made to those who expressed intrest first ... Just keeping y'all updated as asked...

Leon sent me some pictures of his Exotic line and how it is progressing and some of the woods he is working with. He is working with Brazailian Rosewood , Tulipwood , Bolivian Rosewood ,Hawaiian Cocobolo ,Birdseye maple , Curly Maple , Olive Wood , Cocobolo ,bubinga and some Hawiian Koa and several other types of exotic wood ... He is hoping to get one together not to sell but to give everyone an idea of what they will look like upon completion ... These cue are coming along right on schedule and these are going to be some sharp looking cues that will come with two shafts.... Here are some updated pictures also throwing in some of the woods he is using in some of the cues he is building for me... Thank you for looking and I will kep you updated as much as I can as The Sly Master continues to work towards unvieling this beautiful line of Exotic Wrapless Players....

Here are some pics Leon sent me ....

You knew it would come ...

Well I have been lucky enough for Leon to send me pictures of these great cues in progress as Leon is to busy working on them to have time to post ... I'm happy to do this and feel honored that Leon would trust me to do this for him. As the pictures go up I am starting to get a pm or two asking why Leon is coring out the woods ... I talked with Leon last night and have the following answer...

Coring the wood is a personal choice each cue maker makes plus some woods have to be cored . It is an extra step and expense to ensure durability , straightness of the cue , and strength ... Some woods move more then others (warpage) or are softer then others ESPECIALLY THESE EXOTIC WOODS so coring helps to keep them straight and make them stronger. Some are concerned it changes the hit of the wood ... While others argue that the the hit is better or mostly in the shaft, tip and ferrell and the butt plays a minimal factor in the hit of the cue ... I've heard many say they can't tell any difference in the hit of a cored or uncored cue ... One thing I have come to the conclussion of is that the hit of a cored or uncored cue is subject to the users preference and thier mind is made up as to what they prefer and I'm not here to change anyones minds... And as far as hit goes cored or uncored Leon Sly's cues have the best hit to them that I have ever experienced ... I have never hit with a cue that hits as well as a Sly and that is why Sly's cues are my personal choice for my player .. It does not get any more real or better then that.

When I was talking to Sly last night about this subject he told me how he felt about it and here it is ... Sly told me that it is his name that is on these cues and will be long after he quits making cues. When one of his customers go out and put thier hard earned money down on one of his cues he wants them to walk away with something that is going to last them a long time . He does not want people uising his cues having to worry about them warping or breaking . And he does not mind the extra work or money it costs to core these cues because he knows he is giving his customers the very best , straightest and strongest cue he can possibly build ... Everything he uses in his cues is top of the line clear down to the glue and finish ... There are no short cuts no expense is spared ... When you buy a Leon Sly Custom you can rest assured everything involved in that cue is the very best money can buy ...

I hope this clears up any questions as to why Sly is coring his cues. The truth is that some woods need to be cored . And for some woods it is the cue builders preference . Just as it is the customer responsiblity to do thier research and figure out what thier own preference is for cored or uncored cues ... For me if it is going to make my cue stay stronger and straighter longer then that is for me ... Because I know when I buy a Sly I'm already getting the best hitting cue in my eyes that I can buy ...

One more question:
How do you get in line for one of these?

Love the photos and the idea behind this line of cues.

Please confirm, these will all be full splice cues?

Since most of the hit comes from the shaft it would be great to see photos, including end grain of this wood as well.

Thanks,
Courtney

Hmmmm I will have to talk to Leon about those pictures I don't see a problem with that as far as how do you get in line for one of these cues I would suggest emailing or pm'ing Leon Sly there has already been alot of intrest in them ... I have heard talk about starting off with 11 then he mentoned 13 and tonight he said be could make up 15 and have them sold ... It is only a matter of how many he wants to make up in this batch and once the first batch is made I'm pretty sure the second batch will be higher in price becuase once everyone sees how nice these are going to be the demand is going to go up... Dang I hope he remembers me ...lol..

As for Full Splice if you mean one solid 29 inch peice of wood these will not be like that. Leon does make an excellent full splice I know because I play with one of his and own two of them... Leon builds eveything on his cues from top to bottom except for maybe the rubber bumper or the tip small things like that which make more sense to purchase outright. For instance mine is going to be a buttsleeve of Brazailian Rosewood into a handle of the Olive wood shown above and back into a forearm of Brazailain Rosewood... He will use a A joint in these cues and I have asked him to put a Brazailian Rosewood joint in my cue ... He is going to put some nice Southwest ring work at points A,B,C,D & E of my cue .... It will be wrapless and I'm looking for it to be one heck of a player ...

Leon's cues hit better then any cue I have yet to play with and he puts quality workmanship into each cue he makes ... And I'm not saying this because he does anything extra for me or gives me a break on cues ... In fact he probably charges me more then he does others because he knows I'm hooked on his cues ... I know a few he has sold to others at cheaper prices then he charges me ... But I know I'm getting a great cue and I know each and everyone I get is going to be the best hitting cue I can get for the money... I own 2 Sly's now and he is currently making me 4 more ... I have probably tied up over 3 grand in cues from him and I would not do that if I did not believe in what I'm getting and feel I could get my money out of them... Leon is also making me a Quilted Maple cue with a Boars hide wrap that should look sharp... Also in line is a Jump Break cue all of these have been discussed planned out and put in motion as Leon has started on them. Also in the works is a Full Splice Ebony Sneaky that is sure to turn some heads ... This will come after the Exotics as a Full Splice takes a bit more work from what Leon tells me ....

Anyway enough for now ... I will continue to update this thread and answer questions for Sly as these cues are being built ... I talk to Sly daily and any questions you have I can find out the answers for you fairly quick... I enjoy doing this and it helps Sly out as he continues to work on the exotics and a few other orders he has ... He is pretty busy in the shop these days as he has several orders and is working to get them out... He told me he is still taking orders but he is not taking deposits or anything at this time because he does not want to fall into the trap of having all these orders and all the deposits and have customers wondering where thier cue is or how soon it will be done as has happened to a few other cue makers ... I know he plans to finish a high end cue for a customer hopefully this week and he will be full speed ahead on the exotic line ... Of which he already has everything cut and cored and ring work done and ready to go .... It won't be long now and eveything is in line to be done by the end of August begining of September...

This much I can say of Sly and why I believe in him everything he does is from a customers perspective. Everything he uses is top of the line the best product he can put into a cue ... Everything is made on top of the line equipment and done to spec. . He will not take a short cut and will not send anything out the door that is not what he would want for himself... Before he packs the cue up he spends extra time polishing , buffing and going over the cue so that when the customer opens the package he is very pleased with the product he sees after all the first impression is a lasting impression...His customer service is second to none if there is any problem what so ever contact Sly and he will make it right and make you happy ... His Sneakies play just as good as a high end cue I honestly believe that Sly is going places in this business if you ever get the chance to talk to him you need to it is a pleasure and you will see why I feel the way I do about Sly and his product... His cues are at a very reasonalbe price now but I honestly don't think that they will stay this way in the future ...

His name is getting out more and more and this exotic line is sure to bump him up a notch or two on the cue maker ladder... And what I like best is there is nothing , nothing at all that I can run out in front him of him as a idea that he can't do... Wait till you see this Full Splice Sneaky he is going to do for me ... It was my idea but he is going to do it and really thinks it is going to be something special ... He thinks he will get more sales off this cue... Also Sly takes the time to tell me what it is all about and fill me in on what I dont know and if I come up with a bad idea he dont shoot it down but tells me how we can do it and make it work and be something nice that will last ... Well enough of this next or Sly is going to get the big head and the next cue I order from him is going to cost me a arm and a leg ... lol
