sorry if i offended anyone. my point was simply this. i am jewish. in sports there are hardly any jewish sports heros. hence the question is he? i believe he is, i meant this as a good thing. there are no black pro pool players, this is a shame. however, you could look at someone and say ahh their black. you can't look at someone and say ahh their jewish. anyhow, sorry for being off topic, but honestly how many jewish professional pool pros are there??????? p.s. i was told in isreal they don't play pool they play snooker, is this true?

Well, the language you used was unfortunate and inappropriate. It led people to justifiable anger.

Read Mordechai Richler's book "On Snooker" for some discussion of this. I don't know what you mean "no Jewish sports heroes"? I know in the past a lot of Jewish kids looked up to Jewish athletes. And there were some. A lot of boxers. Some baseball, etc... But it is getting tired. A lot of Jewish writers write about their upbringings and looking up to athletes back in the day. But we're getting past that. Fortunately the anti semitism that drove Jewish kids to look up to identifiably Jewish athletes is waning, at least in America. Let's keep it that way.

Also you might want to check out the new book Hustler Days which talks a lot about Jersey Red.

Not long ago a Major League pitcher converted to Judaism. At his conversion the rabbi asked him if he wanted to take a Hebrew name. He said yeah, Sandy Koufax. Nope, no Jewish sports heroes.

well said, i would like to see however professional pool players at cardiff for the 9-ball world championship.

Hustler Days is great. Just about finished with it... And yeah, Silencer, you should frame questions. Don't be lazy. If you don't have time to coherently ask a question, don't hit SUBMIT.

Why don't you leave the "jewish" thing out of it. I am so tired of people bringing ethnicity into stuff. And after 14 years of hearing Jews spew their stuff in and around Berkeley, California, I find it totally intolerable. I'm tired of it and am starting to feel that many people who cite their ethnic background are victims of their own big mouth.

My apologies for jumping so heavily on your case, but the way your previous post was worded sounded really bad.

As to the question, I think it is a good thing that pool players don't distinguish between jewish and non-jewish. All pool players really care about is the game. It would be nice to think that none of us are prejudiced in other areas of our lives, but that probably not true. I think probably there are a fewer pool players (pro and otherwise) who are jewish and it makes sense as the percentage of people of jewish in the general population is lower than the percentage of white, christians. Actually I'm of old Yankee descent, I'm willing to bet there are not a lot of us playing professional pool either and for the same reason. There are more people in the general population whose ancestors imigrated within the last 3 or 4 generations than anything else.
Of course it could be that jewish and old yankees are not genetically predisposed to playing pool, but somehow I don't think so. :)

I re-edited my post so reread it, asap. Thanks.

Better, thanks. But I guess what bothers me is the "Jews in Berkeley" line. That sounds like some of the the things I have heard real anti-semites say. You know, the "Those New York Jews" or "The Jewish Bankers.." that kind of crap. I don't think you are one of those people, and don't think you view the world in those terms. I do agree that people who cite their ethnic background in some kind of victimized context can get old real fast.

Thanks for editing however.

Where in CO do you play? The poolhall I spent a lot of time in is closed, but there are some good ones there.

Silencer you keep making statements as if it was right out of the Talmud, the Bible, the Constitution. First Alison Fisher is better than any male player, then Ralf Soquet the best player in the world, and nine ball being an insignificant game ebecause it has no pattern play. Now "there is no black pro pool player". WHat is wrong with you. Have you not heard of Cliff Joyner? Billy Palmer who was the only one to put Efren in the loss column at the Derby one pocket, Tony Chohan, Will Munson, Ike Runnels, Bugs Rucker(one of the great bankers of our time)? Get your head out of your pontificating butt. Are you an only child that never had an older sibling straighten you out. Dont you have a significant other that can tell you when you are saying something stupid?

B'joe, that's the stuff I encountered in Berkeley in the post 60's. It got real old. Here in Denver I have friends of all backgrounds but Berkeley became intolerable for me.

JPB:

In and around Denver I play at Table Steaks at Edgewater, the Mirage in Littleton and Sport Bowl on Broadway.

Hi folks,

I got a chuckle out of some of these posts. Having grown up with Mike Sigel, I know a bit about him. Had dinner with him three times last week. He is (was, will be) a great ..... pool player. I was reminded of a scene in the movie "Airplane" where one of the passengers was reading a short pamphlet "Greatest Jewish Sports Legends". It brought tears to my eyes then, and now!

Yep, played at Table Steaks a couple times after Frank had to move from Colfax and Sheridan. Also played at The Billiard Institute which moved into the Colfax Billiards spot. Loved it when they got the heated slate billirds tables. I really liked the old Colfax billiards at about 4:00 am. Interesting spot, good equipment.

Played at the Sport Bowl a few times. It was closer than others for me, but I didn't really like it. Never played Mirage. The old dive I played the most in, AAA Billiards closed and became a church. A real tragedy. I miss it and the people.

Last time I was there I only got to play at table Steaks East or whatever they call it. I think they are the tables from the place that used to be called "The Pool Hall" on Havana I think. I wish I could have made it down to Shakespeares, but alas I didn't. I have been meaning to get to Denver for a visit but haven't been able to.

Okay, the Table Steaks at Edgewater is located on Sheridan, just north of Colfax and the now defunct Billiards Institute. The owner(s) of the latter bought the former McChensney's on Old Wadsworth in Arvada and it's now known as Brooklyn or Brooklyn's.

Oh yes, another Table Steaks is nearing completion just around the corner from Sport Bowl. It's the first upscale venue Englewood has had in ages and I hope that it does well.

I think that Colfax Billiards is now located west, on Tennyson - about 6 tables inhabit the place.
