Been asking the bar owner for Diamonds

My team has won our APA division for three sessions in a row now. Our home bar has 4x8 Valley bb's that have seen better days: crap felt, rails "hop" and forget slow rolling a ball down table, drift will ruin any chance.

I've been asking the owner to look into getting us 3.5x7 Diamonds. He claims he spoke to a representative from Louisville who said " a 3.5x7 is a 3x5x7 be it a Diamond or not.....ok

He also things putting quality cloth on a valley bar box will make them "just as good as a Diamond".....bs #2

I can understand his concerns about putting in quality tables. He can't watch them the entire time nor can his bar maids. A lot of the people that frequent this establishment like to play pool on occasion. They're not pool players.

I'm afraid the getting Diamonds for our league dream is drifting away from me :frown:

Is the Diamond fairy going to just give the tables to him for free?

How much money do you and your league spend in there reguarly?

The past few times I've seen leagues play, I've noticed lots of water being ordered, and no tips to the waitresses. (not you Danny)

Of course there is always the option of playing somewhere else, but it is APA, not like it's Diamond's APA.

No one is going to drop 7K to get a pair of Diamond tables for a single league team.

Winning your division is nice but what are you implying it means? If a division win gets you new tables what does a regional or national win entitle you to?

If table quality is that important to you (and it is to me BTW) then it sounds like you should look for a home bar that has quality tables.

If you want to "get" Diamond tables for "your" bar then maybe you guys should pony up some of the cash.

Pool leagues are great but they aren't paying the bills. No matter what bar in any town I worked in the USA has a pool team made the register drawer sing. Maybe your best bet is to get with the owner and have the teams there all chip in and hire a decent mechanic and fix up the valleys. Best bet in my book. Also shows the owner ur gonna be faithful if u invest some cash.

Oh cmon. They won their league. Diamond tables for all APA league winners.

Valley are such junk and they do nothing for pool. Oh wait yes they do.

I'm paying for them for the bar I play at. It's a nice deal all around. Four tournament used barboxes.

In our town/area of say 150k people, there are say 50 bars where APA is played out of. 10 years ago there were just a handful of them that were trying out the "new" fad and got a diamond table. Because of those few bars and the fact that the Diamond tables play great, I'm not sure if ANY of the other bars still have valley tables for league play. There has to be one somewhere but I can't think of it as I sit here. It's been an interesting transformation over the years to see teams migrate around to different bars until they settle in somewhere they like. Bottom line is: In our area, if you do not have a Diamond table, you will have about a 1% chance of keeping your pool teams. While it's true that some of the bars don't need pool teams, it sure does help on weekday evenings.

Sounds to me like you must be supporting "Banks" and the bar he installed the four Diamond Small tables in. Correct?

What is the return on the cost of the new tables for the bar owner? Bars make money on booze sales, not the quarters they take out of bar boxes.

Wonder what John Taffer the Bar Rescue guy would say about your dream?

Our LO has several he willing to put in the bar, at what price or % of the intake I don't know. There are weekly tournaments there and always a steady crowd.

It would be nice to have diamonds but I'm not the one paying for them so it is what it is

Yeah I think it's just crazy that he wont drop about $6000 on a few diamond barboxes that only a handful of people will treat good...

Lyn, I have no idea who that is. I'm pretty sure they play elsewhere.

I've been pretty impressed with how most have treated them. Only a couple of numbskulls have put their drink on them that I've seen. The bar wasn't doing too well right before the tables went in and some of the league players, myself included, so they keep an eye on them. Personally, I wouldn't want to deal with the headache of putting them in a place that's in a questionable location.

It was a sizable investment and the new owner wasn't too knowledgeable about what it could mean. I just finished my student and car loans, so I figured what the hell. Now, even when it is slow, they can still count on some players coming in. In Oregon, the summers can be kinda random. I'm looking forward to see what the fall brings.

Putting diamonds in a bar is like putting ice cream on a hot dog.

Well, I can only think of one place in Portland that doesn't put ice cream on its hot dogs. It only has 2. One place in Oregon City nearby has 12 or 14 dogs with ice cream. Another has about 6 with and 8 without.

Actually, In Oregon at least, the bars make money on the state run gambling machines.
The state itself is the gambling addict.

Take the video poker machines out of the pool rooms and bars in Vegas and only the casinos would be open. None of the rooms can make ends meet without the state sanctioned gambling. Oops, I meant "gaming" No one would sanction gambling would they  .

Why not do some of the leg work for him. Call Diamond up directly. They have deals to put in tables at no cost to the owner, and split/share the revenue from the tables. But also know, there will be NO MORE opening the tables for league nights (if they do it now), or because you play in leauges and you think you should play for free when you come in (many folks still beileve that)

And if you guys are NOT in there playing a lot, they might pull the tables if they don't generate enough income. So, do the leg work, and then actually show up, a lot, and use the tables, and then start recruiting folks from other bars to come play at your bar that has the good tables, and maybe bring a few leagues over there on open nights to increase revenue even more. Nothing to lose by trying.

That's really funny considering how Diamond doesn't have an established league system like Valley does. And lots of people can't give a distinct difference on why they think a Diamond is better than a Valley, they just rehash things people have told them.
