Second attempt at a cue (case)

Well, seeing all the cues out there, and all the cue makers, and not having a huge basement to do woodworking, I decided to dive into the world of leather cases. I haven't seen too many posts of anyone trying to build there own cases. What do you think? I have been working on the plans for about a 9 months now (off an on), working on autocad drawings, templates and jigs. Trial and error finally some results....

I'm impressed, if this is only your second attempt i will love to see the next couple of cases.

I figured someone would mention Jack Justis. Yeah, I really like his style. I also like Steve Price's cases. They are very clean looking. Both are similar in structure. But, I tried not to copy anyone. I did utilize basic functional ideas, but there are only a few ways to do certain things i.e. pockets, are pretty much the same on most cases. I prefer my case to be carried on the left shoulder, so I made it that way. Zippers? I like brass.

The one posted is formed with 7/8 oz leather, high density foam, and sewn billiard fabric sleeves. It is a 2b4s. I looked at tubes, but they add a ton of weight. I'll probably get away from rivetting so much, and lean more toward hand stitching some more of the details.

Thanks for the compliments.

You did a good job considering that is your second attempt. I will say personally i dont like all the metal on the outside of the case. I think it is way to easy to scratch a cue or damage it. I look forward to seeing your future work. Good luck!

Never seen a "Steve Price's Case", but as far as the rivetting it is a good process, and should last longer than stiching IMO....

Trust me, there were a lot of mistakes made before I touched a piece of leather!

Tubes?

I was looking at them golfing bag tubes yesterday and it gave me an idea for a light weight solution for ya.....

Can I ask why you decided to make the zippers go that direction??

I attached the pockets using a machine and upholstery thread. I really don't like the way they came out, so I plan on hand stitching them in the future. The machine is nice, and I got it for $100, works like a champ, but the throat depth is not big enough to sew a 16" pocket.

Nice looking case. How about a plain black 2x4 with no pockets?

The one I posted a finished about 2 months ago. I did do one out of chrome tanned leather, no tooling, a black 2b4s with one pocket. This one is mine. (I actually mind-farted and sewed the pocket on backwards!) Here is a pic.

And how did you got the patterns into the leather ?? Also with a machine ??

The patterns took a while, lots of cardboard cut-outs, and plenty of reworking my autocad files. I have all the measurements in CAD, but I transfer them by hand with patterns and cut or punch everything with handtools. Here is another one I am working on.

Think you are well on the way to making Great Case, if you can do Custom Sizes, Pockets, and Lengths...

Custom won't be too hard. Mostly it's tweeking one measurement here or there. I am trying to get a 1b2s together for a friend, and I have a 3b6s in the works, too. A local guy wanted a 4b8s(!) but that gonna be a lot of cow for that one. The nice thing about autocad is I have the ability to tweek measurements, make a model on screen, and see if it will work. Aside from that, I don't use any other tools besides hand tools. Although, I do use a dremel tool with a router attachement and a jig I made to cut the rivet holes. I tried doing that be hand, and it was a nightmare. The rivets really weren't straight, but if you had a few bourbons in ya, they were perfect ;)
