I Don't Remember Back In The Day

I don't remember back in the 1950's through 1970's anyone asking if you were A<B<C or D player. A stranger asking for or giving weight. How tight the pockets were. I don't remember anyone walking in with a break cue or jump cue in a 4 butt 5 shaft case. Just some thoughts. Johnnyt

Did you also walk to and from the poolroom in bare feet, over broken glass, through 3 feet of snow, uphill both ways?

And had to live in a lake, and eat poison for breakfast? (Secret Policeman's Ball, if you don't know.)

I think that comes from league players and ratings. All I had was my cue in a one butt two shaft soft case and I would find a cue in the rack to break with.

Thats because things were more simple back than.
I remember those days.I played with a house cue. And if the tip needed to be scuffed I took it outside to the concrete side walk and roughed it up.
If the shaft was gummy I slicked it down with a dollar bill.
No break or jump cues.Played all strangers even up the first time and adjusted the game the next time if needed.
Now days players drive themselves nuts trying to find the magical combination of shaft type, ferrule, tip, and chalk to play better.
Some times I think pool players are worse then golfers trying to find the right mix of equipment. No golfers are worse. I've been there.

No but I do remember walking miles backward while Hitchiking to the Poolroom wearing Stetson Shoes, dress pants and a leather coat.

John, I made a post a while back and some people couldn't figure out what I was talking about! One thing I said is how liberalism is taking this "once was" great country and turning it into a land of little *****es and wuses!

Liberalism is a mental disorder! Back in your day John, people had balls, they would play and see what would happen. Today, people try to make a game they can't lose with! You know why??? Because the majority believe in entitlements! "You have to give me this or that and blah blah blah!!"

I know who the good players are, and I know who the not so good players are! I try to stay within a ball of my level! Sometimes I get over confident and go for the better players, and most times I lose. But I don't bother *****ing about you have to give me this or that! It's usually ,,,"ok, ilk give you the breaks and ball in hand"! I have one close friend who is a pro caliber player and I play him sets to 5 for 20 and "I" always give him the first break! He drills me mostly Everytime!

A few months back we got together and we played 5 sets, I actually played well and won 1 set! I gave him the 100 and he says "Eli, it's only 60?!? You won a set!" I said buddy, just you giving me your time is awesome! Don't worry I said, you deserve it!

My point is this, today,,,,, the majority are nothing but low class, selfish, no balls, punk ass pusseys who only want to rob people because they think that makes them "smart"?!?!
I say funk em all!

Everywhere I played back at that time (Brooklyn, NYC, Staten Island, Trenton & Newark), weight seemed to regularly came up for discussion.

People wanted an edge and everyone was looking to give up as little weight as possible or get as much as you could swindle from your opponent.

If the two players knew each other's game, it was mostly bluster and blunder.....showmanship......but when serious money was thrown on the table,
or the other guy was not known that well, weight always was negotiated. It might not get conceded or it was less than what was wanted but that
didn't keep anyone from asking.

The biggest case I recall seeing back then was a 2x4 but I did some larger cases at tournaments but the 2x4 was common in the 70's.....in the 60's,
the Chicago gangster, violin style 1x2 case was the most common as I recall..

What if you are in a new room and looking for action. Wouldn't it be a good idea to ask around a bit? What if a pro challenges you (and you know he is a pro)? Would it not be smart to ask for weight, or are you forced to either be robbed or decline the offer? I try to stay within a ball of my level! Sometimes I get over confident and go for the better players, and most times I lose. But I don't bother *****ing about you have to give me this or that! I don't see how this is smart of even "noble" of you to do. If you want to play him even up that is your business. Bragging about it, and pointing out that you are giving him an advantage seems to negate whatever moral highground you want to put yourself on. If you want to test yourself or enjoy getting beaten (whatever is true of these two) then do it for yourself and not the approval of others.

A few months back we got together and we played 5 sets, I actually played well and won 1 set! I gave him the 100 and he says "Eli, it's only 60?!? You won a set!" I said buddy, just you giving me your time is awesome! Don't worry I said, you deserve it!
Doesn't that contradict what you said previously about entitlement? Why is he entitled to a hundred if he only won 60?

My point is this, today,,,,, the majority are nothing but low class, selfish, no balls, punk ass pusseys who only want to rob people because they think that makes them "smart"?!?!
The older generation seem to worship the hustlers, even put them in the "Hall of Fame". How is that different? The only thing that indicates to me is that there is a double standard. High level players can be smart about matching up but lower level players can't. Seems to me that the lower level players won't allow themselves to be robbed anymore.

To me there is very little nobility in defeat at pool. It is a game i play for the enjoyment of it, and yes sometimes I will test myself against good players without weight, but if I lose there is no big martyrdom in that. I lost, plain and simple. If a guy challenges me for a lot of money, that I know plays a few levels above me, then I ask for weight or decline most of the time, unless I feel I'm playing strongly or feel lucky. I don't feel I'm required to donate to anyone unless I choose to do so. To use your word entitlement: I don't think that players are entitled to my money. I can choose to give my money to them, or they can earn it through hard work. If I want to watch a pro work I rent an Accu Stats pay per view, rather than loosing 500 dollars. I don't have that kind of money to piss away. Besides there is such a thing as a tournament. You can play better players, and you will usually get their best game, instead of watching them stall to extract as much money from you as they can.

It's ok:) this is why until you come to the realization that "liberalism is mental disorder" is a fact, you will consider me an idiot! That's ok, I don't mind;)

Very very good post!:) the only thing I will add is you need to understand the difference between gambling, robbing, and donating! 3 distinctly different things!

20 dollars to you may be 100 to someone else! $100 to someone else may be 10 grand to you! Look at the big picture and maybe you will see things the way I do! You say you don't have $500 to piss away? I know some people the piss away 5&10k,,, because they can!

Remember, you said it, you can decline;)

Are you kidding, years ago if you walked in and were just a stranger that was enough for you not to get played. They would get on the phone and call all over the place trying to find someone to play.

Most would not even give you a try, you could not get them to the table with a gun to their heads. Then when that player would show up you couldn't even get those jack-offs to bet anything on the side. You are living in a fantasy world.
