Omega busts another thief at BCA

So I'm standing in the Omega Billiards booth last night purchasing a jump cue and new case. While I'm paying, I see a guy that's about 25 years old behind us looking at McDermott cues. He takes one off the rack, places it against his side and walks out of the booth. I tell Gilbert who's working the booth that someone just walked out with one of his cues. Since he was the only employee in the booth, I followed the guy to the table his team was about to start his match on. He started showing the cue to all his teammates who ranged from probably 35 - 60 years old. I walked back and showed Gilbert where the guy was. He walked over, grabbed the cue and seen his price sticker still attached to the bottom. Gilbert snatched him up and took him back to his booth and we called security. Bill Stock also showed up to find out what was going on. Long story short....the guy admitted to stealing the cue. His team came over and seemed really pissed off at Omega for pressing the issue to call the police. They offered to pay for the cue and couldn't understand why they preferred to press charges instead. One of the guys from the team even stood in the isle telling people "don't buy anything in this booth." The guy was escorted off the floor by security and I believe they were going to turn him over to the police. Bill Stock said he would be banned from the tournament floor (why not banned from BCA period?) and not allowed back. The team only had 5 players so they had to forfeit every 5th match since their teammate was taken away.

I just want to say that I respect Omega's decision to press charges. They were ripped off at BCA last year and caught the guy, ripped off at the Riviera back in March and now ripped off again in July. Enough is enough. One less thief on the tournament floor! The team in question were wearing shirts that said "Santa Barbara Moose Lodge." Wonder how they'll feel finding out someone representing them is a thief.

I agree with their actions. People needs to understand we, the consumers, end up paying the bill for theft. Good for you that you got involved!

Good for Omega

I have a special place in my heart for thieves and those that harm the young and the elderly. It's a very dark place..........

If one of my teammates stole a cue there's no way in hell I'd offer to chip in to buy it. I don't care if it would cost us matches or not.

It is sad how their teammates actually didnt find much wrong with his behavior. I hope he gets what he deserves (hint:not a free cue).

100% behind Omega.

I believe we are all too soft on thieves these days including those with pencils and computers too. Back in the day, it was punishable by death...I'm not sure it wouldn't be a better society if we still held to those standards.

One thing to steal and one thing to steal AND think that it isnt wrong. Back in the day I was in high school some of my friends would steal stuff from stores and argue that itis because they are charging too much thus ripping them off. Never understood the logic behind that but I guess criminals acts are not supposed to be logical.

The most comical part was when one of his teammates said "we'll pay for the cue...he's young and it was an honest mistake." I about fell over when I heard that.

The only mistake he made was not knowing which ones were worth anything! The rest was just stupid being stupid. Think he'll sign up here afterwards and try to defend himself like the idiot from last year(or was it 2 years ago)?

I was half tempted to post on the Santa Barbara pool FB page asking which one got arrested. :D

An honest mistake to steal a cue? You should've walked over and took his teammates cues and said I'll be taking these from you and selling them later. Whoops, honest mistake, huh?

You didn't snap a pic of the thief? I'm sure the moose lodge will be proud.

I actually just sent the details to the contact email address for the Santa Barbara Moose Lodge. I'd like to be a fly on the wall for that conversation.

I was going to get a picture of the guy but they already escorted him out.

Very commendable of you to get involved & what kind of idiot tries to justify stealing?

Never having been to one of these big events where vendors sell cues, how can this happen? Why is it set up so any shmuck can lay hands on a cue that wasn't taken out of a secure rack and handed to them to see? Lots of opportunities for cues to get dinged or flat out ripped off...

Glad Omega threw the book at him. Kid should have known since Kindergarten that steeling is wrong.

They have a big booth with at least a hundred cues on display and a single entrance. They seem to have only one person watching it usually so when a customer is engaged with them it leaves an opening for these aholes to steal.

From the sounds of it the whole team are a bunch of "winners". They all sat there and admired the stolen cue and then tried to buy their buddy out of trouble when it was realized he got caught? And then they trash talk the booth for calling the police and stand outside of it telling noone to buy anything from them?

They are lucky I am not the TD, They would all be out of the event for the year, and the theif would be barred from the BCAPL for life.
