Given the level of interest already in the 2017 Mosconi Cup event, I thought I would again post the career Mosconi-Cup records of this year's players. The combined records for each player were compiled from individual-year match results on Wikipedia (all years there except 2014) and my own records.

Once Team Europe is announced, I will add comparable information for them [added Nov. 1].

Team USA will enter the event with a combined 17 years of Cup experience, with 82% of that in Van Boening and Hatch. Team Europe has 25 years of Cup experience, but 92% of that is in Souquet and Van den Berg. Each team has one rookie.

Method 1. Under this method, I counted a full win or loss for each player in each match (i.e., not splitting the point into fifths for teams matches or halves for doubles matches). So these numbers essentially answer the question: "In how many winning and losing matches has each player been involved?"

  • Team USA
    • • Shane Van Boening (10 years -- 2007-2016) ..... 10-15 singles, 11-14 doubles, 4-6 teams, 25-35 total (winning percentage of 42%)

      • Dennis Hatch (4 years -- 2009-2010, 2012-2013) ..... 4-3 singles, 5-7 doubles, 2-2 teams, 11-12 total (48%)

      • Skyler Woodward (2 years -- 2015-2016) ..... 0-3 singles, 3-3 doubles, 1-1 teams, 4-7 total (36%)

      • Oscar Dominguez (1 year -- 2009) ..... 0-2 singles, 2-1 doubles, 1-0 teams, 3-3 total (50%)

      • Billy Thorpe (0 years -- rookie)

      • Team USA Total ..... 14-23 singles, 21-25 doubles, 8-9 teams, 43-57 total (43%)

    Team Europe
    • • Ralf Souquet (16 years -- 1994, 1996-2003, 2006-2011, 2013) ..... 20-13 singles, 27-17 doubles, 1-1 trebles, 4-4 teams, 52-35 total (60%)

      • Nick Van den Berg (7 years -- 2002-2003, 2006, 2010-2012, 2015) ..... 6-8 singles, 7-11 doubles, 0-2 trebles, 2-4 teams, 15-25 total (38%)

      • David Alcaide (1 yr. -- 2006) ..... 1-1 singles, 1-1 doubles, 1-1 trebles, 0-2 teams, 3-5 total (38%)

      • Jayson Shaw (1 yr. -- 2016) ..... 1-1 singles, 1-1 doubles, 1-0 teams, 3-2 total (60%)

      • Joshua Filler (0 years -- rookie)

      • Team Europe Total ..... 28-23 singles, 36-30 doubles, 2-4 trebles, 7-10 teams, 73-67 total (52%)

Method 2. Another way of looking at the records is to count a full point for each player in a singles win or loss, half a point for each player in a doubles win or loss, and one-fifth of a point for each player in a team win or loss. So the following numbers essentially answer the question: "What numerical contribution has each player made to the overall Mosconi Cup match scores?"

  • Team USA

    • • Van Boening (10 yrs.) ..... 10-15 singles, 5.5-7.0 doubles, 0.8-1.2 teams, 16.3-23.2 total (41%)

      • Hatch (4 yrs.) ..... 4-3 singles, 2.5-3.5 doubles, 0.4-0.4 teams, 6.9-6.9 total (50%)

      • Woodward (2 yrs.) ..... 0-3 singles, 1.5-1.5 doubles, 0.2-0.2 teams, 1.7 - 4.7 total (27%)

      • Dominguez (1 yr.) ..... 0-2 singles, 1.0-0.5 doubles, 0.2-0 teams, 1.2-2.5 total (32%)

      • Thorpe

      • Team USA Total ..... 14-23 singles, 10.5-12.5 doubles, 1.6-1.8 teams, 26.1-37.3 total (41%)

    Team Europe
    • • Souquet (16 yrs.) ..... 20-13 singles, 13.5-8.5 doubles, 0.3-0.3 trebles, 0.8-0.7 teams, 34.6 - 22.6 (60%)

      • Van den Berg (7 yrs.) ..... 6-8 singles, 3.5-5.5 doubles, 0-0.7 trebles, 0.4-0.7 teams, 9.9-14.9 total (40%)

      • Alcaide (1 yr.) ..... 1-1 singles, 0.5-0.5 doubles, 0.3-0.3 trebles, 0-0.3 teams, 1.8-2.2 total (46%)

      • Shaw (1 yr.) ..... 1-1 singles, 0.5-0.5 doubles, 0.2-0 teams, 1.7 - 1.5 total (53%)

      • Filler

      • Team Europe Total ..... 28-23 singles, 18.0-15.0 doubles, 0.7-1.3 trebles, 1.4-1.8 teams, 48.1-41.1 total (54%)

Our best player for the last two years is left off the team and Sky gets to dog his brains out for the third time in a row...

Makes total sense

Why does it seem like Sky is being officially showcased as the centerpiece of this team?

I've got nothing against him, but I wouldn't trade one Shane for five Skys.

A Matchroom news release (dated 9/14) on AzB's front page includes the career records of this year's Team USA.

For Shane, Matchroom shows 27 wins in 60 matches. That is different from my information in post #1 above (25 wins in 60 matches). I have re-checked my info and believe it to be correct.

For Sky, Matchroom shows 5 wins in 10 matches. That is different from what I posted (4 wins in 11 matches). I have re-checked my info and believe it to be correct -- he participated in 6 matches in 2015 (with 3 wins) and 5 matches in 2016 (1 win).

Matchroom's info for Dennis and Oscar agrees with mine.

I see this cup hinging on 4 players: Shaw and Vandenberg for Europe and Thorpe and Shane for America.

Shaw is the hot hand coming into the event and he sunk the winning 9 ball in last year's cup. If he keeps the fire up for the week, he'll be a terror. If he doesn't, could be very close. Vandenberg may not have the most impressive Cup record, but he has also sunk a winning 9 ball for the Cup, and some of his wins were huge momentum shifters for the teams he played on. If Vandenberg finds his clutch, he can be very deadly. Vandenberg also has made one of the most legendary jump shots in any event at the Mosconi Cup.

America needs US Open Shane at this event, pure and simple. And that is tough to do when the format is different than what plays to Shane's strengths of break building. He's been working hard though, and it remains to be seen if his early loss to Vandenberg this year will serve as extra motivation or distraction. The wildcard here is Thorpe. You pretty much know what to expect by now from Hatch, Oscar, and Woodward. Thorpe will need to pick up the slack if Hatch is not at his best, or be the third counter to Filler depending on how the young German is playing.

It's interesting how these ten players have a mirror player sitting on the other side:
Souquet and Van Boening, Shaw and Hatch, Alcaide and Dominguez, Filler and Thorpe, and Vandenberg and Woodward. Should hopefully be a good match this year!

As the stats point out, Europe started their big winning percentage, just before SVB started playing in the cup. U.S hasn't slid backwards in ability, they have stayed at the same skill level for years. On the other hand, Europe has got stronger and has more top players. Johnnyt
