Burton Spain Cues - 12-05-2017, 01:44 PM

Feel free to show yours.

The Model 31 cue with inlays was built in the early to mid-80s, before Burton Spain retired in 1988. It has his normal 5/16x18 reverse delrin joint.

The other cue is the first one Burton Spain made when he came out of retirement in 1992 and has a more normal 5/16x14 joint - piloted delrin with a SS sleeve. The connecting end of the shafts is all delrin.

Spain offered a lot of options on his cues - the results were sometimes whacky. It's nice to see one that was completely his own design - nice and simple but with extra-long points and highly-figured maple.

But I wish the shafts were thinner - maybe I'll sand them down.

Very nice cues. Can't help but love those Spain blanks too. He had a good sense of proportion.

All the best,
WW

Thanks guys. Not much appreciation for the old masters these days, which is good for a few of us.

As far as I can tell this cue was unplayed until last night. With the un-Spain-like joint, and having read 'Making Blanks' yesterday afternoon (which ends as he is beginning his last period of cue-making), I had to give it a try. I don't know why he didn't make more of these - the hit was magical. I am heading to the pool hall in a minute and it will be difficult not to take this cue along.

Not switching from my playing cue (the Spain with diamonds) but pretty happy with an 8 ball break and run in my second game.
