Mosconi Cup Stats -- Career Records for Players on 2017 Teams - 09-13-2017, 05:32 PM

Given the level of interest already in the 2017 Mosconi Cup event, I thought I would again post the career Mosconi-Cup records of this year's players. The combined records for each player were compiled from individual-year match results on Wikipedia (all years there except 2014) and my own records.

Once Team Europe is announced, I will add comparable information for them.

Team USA will enter the event with a combined 17 years of Cup experience, with 4 veterans and 1 rookie.

Method 1. Under this method, I counted a full win or loss for each player in each match (i.e., not splitting the point into fifths for teams matches or halves for doubles matches). So these numbers essentially answer the question: "In how many winning and losing matches has each player been involved?"

  • Team USA
    • Shane Van Boening (10 years -- 2007-2016) ..... 10-15 singles, 11-14 doubles, 4-6 teams, 25-35 total (winning percentage of 42%)

      Dennis Hatch (4 years -- 2009-2010, 2012-2013) ..... 4-3 singles, 5-7 doubles, 2-2 teams, 11-12 total (48%)

      Skyler Woodward (2 years -- 2015-2016) ..... 0-3 singles, 3-3 doubles, 1-1 teams, 4-7 total (36%)

      Oscar Dominguez (1 year -- 2009) ..... 0-2 singles, 2-1 doubles, 1-0 teams, 3-3 total (50%)

Billy Thorpe (0 years -- rookie)

      Team USA Total ..... 14-23 singles, 21-25 doubles, 8-9 teams, 43-57 total (43%)

    Team Europe

    • Team Europe Total .....

Method 2. Another way of looking at the records is to count a full point for each player in a singles win or loss, half a point for each player in a doubles win or loss, and one-fifth of a point for each player in a team win or loss. So the following numbers essentially answer the question: "What numerical contribution has each player made to the overall Mosconi Cup match scores?"

  • Team USA
    • Van Boening (10 yrs.) ..... 10-15 singles, 5.5-7.0 doubles, 0.8-1.2 teams, 16.3-23.2 (41%)

      Hatch (4 yrs.) ..... 4-3 singles, 2.5-3.5 doubles, 0.4-0.4 teams, 6.9-6.9 total (50%)

      Woodward (2 yrs.) ..... 0-3 singles, 1.5-1.5 doubles, 0.2-0.2 teams, 1.7 - 4.7 total (27%)

      Dominguez (1 yr.) ..... 0-2 singles, 1.0-0.5 doubles, 0.2-0 teams, 1.2-2.5 total (32%)

      Thorpe

      Team USA Total ..... 14-23 singles, 10.5-12.5, 1.6-1.8 teams, 26.1-37.3 total (41%)

    Team Europe

    • Team Europe Total .....

If Billy shoots like he did in Syracuse, then the US is winning this year

Our best player for the last two years is left off the team and Sky gets to dog his brains out for the third time in a row...

Makes total sense

Why does it seem like Sky is being officially showcased as the centerpiece of this team?

I've got nothing against him, but I wouldn't trade one Shane for five Skys.

You're right: Shane's got nothing but a gaffe break and an unprecedented streak of good luck.
