Had this great Pro Billiards Tour 8 Ball Championship match between Efren and Carter playing while I was working today, and at the end of the match there is an interview with Don Mackey - the Commissioner of the Pro Billiards Tour. He had some great insight into the marketing strategy of the tour and the direction he believed the sport was headed in 1995.

Flash forward 23 years later, and we seem to have not gone much further.

Funny, he was the genius who negotiated OUT of the ESPN contract.
That after when ESPN showed the US Open live the year before.

Yeah...then Mackey sued RJ Reynolds for $800,000...won, and stole all the money...the players got NONE. That was the end of the PBTA. Just another crooked promoter.

Mackey was one of the biggest scumbags the sport has ever known. And that's saying something.

IIRC his biggest complaint was that after the initial run, ESPN owned the rights to the matches and could play them later without paying the players or tour anything else.

But, ESPN did all the filming, did all the promotion and was a guaranteed paycheck.
Something the sport sorely lacks.

Funny, he was the genius who negotiated OUT of the ESPN contract.

I remember that Camel tour.. got the Camel 9 ball signed... I seem to remember
Parica threatening to sue Mackey and the PBTA, and getting paid.
IMO, after Mackey, no company wanted to even get close to sponsoring a
pro billiards tour... what a tool.

Yes, I know all about Mackey. It was just interesting to see what he and the PBT thought the world of pool was headed in that year, before the **** hit the fan.
