Who owes you the most money?

After a long conversation in the pool room last night with one of the regulars about someone who owed him a ton of money, I thought an interesting to start this thread.

Who owes you the most money? Please keep it pool or gambling related, include the story behind why they owe you. I know there are going to be some funny stories. If you don't feel comfortable putting the person's leave it out, make up one, who cares, just submit your story.

I will start with one of mine.

I am a sucker for a pool player and their sad stories of being on the road and running out of money. So here it goes, in 2007 a couple of pool players from Ohio come to Raleigh to try and beat a local sucker out of some money. They don't have a place to stay and since they were fun to hang out with, I let them stay at my house. One of the guys, we will call him Vespa, is driving, very animated and always trying to get in action, decides that he wants to leave after a few days (he got me for $200 for a new tire for his car). The other guy, who I kinda liked, we will call him Jim, says he is going to stay and fly home. Not thinking that this would turn into me paying for him to fly home, I said sure you can stay here. A couple of days go by, he needs to go home, has no money AT ALL, not even any to eat. Begs me to put him in the local tournaments and I pay for his food. I pay for his ticket to fly home, he is supposed to send me the money once he gets there. What a joke that was. After chasing after my money for a couple of months and even paying for an out of town hotel and another flight as well as sending Jim money, his total bill added up to $2,000. He told me I wasn't ever getting my money and to **** off.

Now this wasn't the first time I had been suckered by one of these guys and I admit I am a sucker. I hope that every time I try to help one of these guys I will get paid back for my efforts.

Is it the gambler in them that keeps them from being honest? I bet there aren't many if any pool players that can spell integrity.

It will be great to hear the stories. I have more to add!

I was playing a guy named Charlie... was up $100 and I had previously told him "I can play until nine." Well, nine o'clock comes around and I tell him I have to go and he doesn't want to pay up. He says, I thought you said "we can play another time." We get into a big argument and I tell him to keep his money. There are tons of players that owe me $20 to $40 because they were air-barreling. It's amazing how people will bet something low (to me anyhow) like $20 and can't pay.

I don't play for big money, so nothing huge. I've had many pool players ask to borrow money, but for over $100, only one has not paid me back.

No one has ever left owing me a dollar. I make it clear what the stakes and/or what the (re)payment terms are. Additionally, I make it clear that I'm the type of guy that will spend $10,000 to recover $100 I'm owed.

Same applies to loans, purchases, sales, etc.,. Basically, when it comes to money I'm owed, I'm cold hearted. I'd rather you go hungry for a week than for me to not have that $50 you owe me. Why, you ask? Because I'm not the one who borrowed/lost the money and I won't be re-paid when it's convenient for you.

It's not that I actually care about the money most of the time, it's that I won't be anyone's sucker, I won't be taken advantage of, and I won't be made to look like a fool.

People looking for sympathy have their reasons, and they're usual intentions are not what you think. Yrs ago, when I went broke in Alabama, I walked into a black pool room (late 60's), sold my leather jacket for $20, started playing for $2 a game somewhere else (didn't feel safe there, but it was day time) got pumped back up and made it to FL.

When we were kids in like junior high school I'd meet my friend Chuckie at the pool hall when it opened on Sunday mornings. One day he says "Let's play for a dollar." This kind of surprised me because I was certainly better than him so I say OK and I beat him. He says "Let's go again", and I beat him again. So he says "Double or nothing." Again I beat him. This went on and on until he had to go home. I won every game.

He still owes me $4,194,304.

I'd have settled for $1 but he's been ducking me for the last 45 years. I know, I know, I should have made him post.:grin-square:

Almost every Friday night one of my league teammates comes over around 7pm and we play races to 5 for $10, double on skunks. We have been playing this game for about 4 years now.

We keep the total on a chalk board and don't usually pay it out until its gets around $100 because we are pretty even and it goes up and down a lot. Well he has been in a bit of a slump and hasn't had a winning night in the last year or so. Right now he is down $410, I doubt I will ever get the money but when he complains about the poor condition of my cloth I remind him that if he paid his debt I would replace. He doesn't seem to care quite that much.

I'll start by saing, if you gamble playing pool you will be in 2 groups. The 1st group has been air barreled and the 2nd will eventually get air barreled.
I'm not sure getting air barreled really counts as somebody owing you money? If I loan money out, then it was my money to start and they "owe" me.
I NEVER LOAN MONEY.....PERIOD.
That said, there are a few times over the years that I've been air barreled. The one that sticks in my mind is back in 1989 or 1990. I was playing pool at our local Clicks Billiards. A guy from out of town asks if I want to play some cheap 9 ball. We agree to $5 a game and start off. I had a pretty good edge on playing ability so we adjust to $10 a game and I start giving him the wild 8. We probably played for 6 to 7 hours and I have him stuck 21 games. ......let's step back a bit.....Over the course of playing he says he's from Chicago and and he's in town visiting his family. He is also 18 years of age, info he volunteered. ....I don't tell the Clicks staff because they would kick him out, you have to be 21 to get in. Anyhoo, he is stuck 21 games and says he never carries his money on him, he will walk out to his van and get it. You see where this is going? LOL...Long story short...he walks out door and takes off. I go to the counter and they ask if I'm paying the whole tab for time, I tell them "no just my half." So..basically I got stiffed for $210 and then pay my own time. Oh well, wasn't the first time I got air barreled. Later the bar tender asks when the other guy is going to pay his tab? LOL, no clue, I just met the guy, he's from Chicago. They tried to get me to pay his tab, but I respectfully declined.

The next day, I'm playing again at the same place. I see this same kid come in and ask another guy to play for cheap. I knew he didn't have a dime on him. So, I wasn't going to waste time trying to collect. I just casually walked over to the bar tender and told him I thought that kid was 18 years old. The waitress went over to check his ID and then escorted him to the exit. I felt like I got a lil revenge, hehee. Plus, I knew he would have made a score off the new guy he was going to play. He probably could have easily given him the 8. Felt good knowing I didn't let the lil air barreler get any easy cash.

Many people owe me money. But the most? Over the course of a year one time, I stupidly gave someone around 8K. But I blame MYSELF for lending them money and sending them to tournaments.

And I know I'll never see the money again. And now of course, when I need money and am struggling, it's even MORE obvious how stupid it really was!

Chaz Dillon owes me 2 cases or $750. I have given up over a year ago and just chalk it up to living and learning. If a deal seems to good to be true it probably is.

I had a good friend (I know, I know) and I used to introduce him to people with the words, "This is Mark, don't believe a word he says and don't lend him any money and you'll get along fine".

It is truly amazing how many of those people he still owes money.

It doesn't make them suckers, all they did was give someone a chance, if there was no trust in the world it would be a pretty poor place.

That said if I were the OP I'd certainly name the people involved. Maybe he did.

A guy in North Houston owes me $500 from a set I beat him out of about 3 years ago. ROBINHOOD on here owes me $350 from playoff baseball from last year.

Gambling and owezies go hand in hand. Sometimes it sucks when friends let you down though. Somebody once told me..."you think you have a lot of friends, hugh?" of course I said yes..."just ask them for money and see how many you have left."

If you loan somebody $20 and never see them again, it was money well spent.

I heard that somewhere and it makes sense to me.

I think this guy named Don who was my Photo Agent & Owned a Photo Agency I was contracted with many years ago gets my award. He took me for 20-30K in royalty pay. Did the same thing to several of the other photographer he was contracted with. As I understand it he died of Agent Orange Related causes a few years back. So beside filing bankruptcy, the chance of ever seeing any money are zero.

As for pool because I don't play for money I own no one, and no one owes me.
