Dust Collector addition

I was cleaning out my DC barrel today when I thought I may share the upgrade I did about a year ago. I got tired of wrestling with the plastic bags with all the sawdust in them (ugh it was always a big mess) and the cloth bag filter. I got a cartridge filter that goes to about .1 micron then I build a baffle and installed a 35 or 40 gallon trashcan to make it a two stage collector. I got the lid kit from Woodcraft and made the baffle out of MDF board. I have about 2 inches of fine dust in the plastic bag, and have emptied the barrel 3-4 times so far of the rest of the dust and chips etc. The suction has increased about 6 fold...even when the barrel is almost full, as seen in the pictures.
Hope this helps anyone else that has one of these collectors. for more info, here is the site that got me started on this project.

That is pretty great! I was just grumbling at my dust situation last night. This solution looks solid. What do you do with the full can? Put it out with the trash? Ha!

When it's full with only wood chips I spread it in the woods behind me, worms like it. When it has a lot of delrin, juma, etc. type chips, I then bag it and put it into the trash. I have the collector piped to 5 different stations in the shop using schedule 40 pipe and blast gates. Then I have a ceiling mounted air cleaner for the fine dust that escapes the collector.

That's a pretty good setup. I think it's very important that you have the really good filter in place to keep the fine dust out of the shop.

It really depends on your volume, but you may find that the filter plugs up a little too quickly for your liking. Those filters are expensive. If so, I recommend that you replace the trash can cyclone that you have with one of these

It will catch much more of the fine dust, and keep it out of your filter. You only have to buy this thing once, but the filters cost every time.

I have a big cyclone that pulls off all my turning centers. My 4 blade saw machine makes long stringy chips that seem to find their way through the cyclone and clog my filters (2). After having to replace them too often, I opted to put one of these inline with just the saw machine, which then leads through the big cyclone anyway. Problem solved. Now, I can go 9 months to a year without having to replace my filters.

That is the nuts as Royce mentioned.

I bought a Vortex separator too ( it's been renamed after a lawsuit ) from Rockler. I thought it was better b/c it was larger.

It does not capture the fine dust like the Dust Deputy .

Here's the Jet Vortex dust collector.

From reading the woodworking forums, Jet stole the design from a poor designer who tried to present them his invention. They said no, then they stole the design.
So, he came out with a cheap way to convert your Jet to a Vortex.

Thanks for sharing Dave.
On my tipping station, I have one of those mini cyclon things that are on some household vacuum cleaners. It collects the bits of leather off tips and stuff. I also have the cleanup hose connected to it. What I like about it, is if I accidentally clean up some thing left around, it is only a very small amount to sort through and find it.

I have several of these

http://www.homedepot.com/p/RIDGID-14-Gal-Professional-Wet-Dry-Vac-WD1450/100081216

each coupled with one of these

They work great for one machine, are somewhat portable, remove the really fine dust, and are cheap.

We usually use one of these on each machine

Like I said, I have 1 larger cyclone that handles all our turning centers.

The big one works good, but is noisy. All the small ones are easy to work with as they don't need lots of room or special circuits wired up. You just have to remember to empty the small buckets every day.

I have a dust deputy for the shop vac in the basement, which is awesome. At the time I did the trashcan separator DD didn't have a large one with 5" ports. Nice to see them now, but at $265 it's a bit steep for me at the moment. Maybe in the future.
I know my setup works really well, I occasionally suck up something on my deluxe lathe ( usually a collet) and I'll hear it banging all the way to the trashcan, about 20 feet away...I stop the collector and open the can and it's usually sitting right on top of the chips.
Another upgrade I did at the same time was to convert the dust collector to 240volts. My unit can be wired either way. It made a big difference in the way the motor runs, and seems to have cut the electric bill down a bit. It was drawing 14 amps before on 120v, now its about 6.5 amps on 240v
