What pro tournament should I go see?

I've never been to a pro tournament, and neither have my league friends. So I'd like to do a trip out to one in 2015, and I'd like some suggestions. It would be a mix of couples and singles, probably max of 10. I'm in the Dallas area, so I'm guessing we will have to fly.

Some nice to haves:
- An amateur event we can enter
- Casino and other things to do within walking distance ideally
- Event is at a hotel resort
- VIP seating for the pro event
- Vendor booths

Thanks,
Jeff

Your best bet is the CSI pro events at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, probably in July, run in conjunction with the BCAPL national championships, consisting of about 30 different amateur bar table events, including singles and scotch doubles. All of your listed requirements will be met, depending on your definition of walking distance.

SJM, that does seem like a good fit. That would be the CSI Invitational. I exchanged an email with Ozzy Reynolds in mid-September. He said they were still working out the details of their 2015 events but the Invitational was (unofficially) slated for July 22 - August 1, 2015, in Las Vegas.

CSI's web page does list the US Bar Table Championship (Feb'15), but does not yet show the Invitational.

Anyone have comments on their experience going to the 2014 CSI Invitational in Las Vegas?

I went this year and it was a wonderful event. CSI is the state of the art in both pro and amateur events in America, with Mark Griffin, America's greatest pool visionary, running the show.

You live a little too far away, but the Super Billiards Expo would be okay. If you play TAP League, it would be ideal.

I was lucky enough to be able to go to the 10 ball championships when they played in Frisco a couple of years ago.

Ah yes, that was a Greek tragedy for me. The 2011 Ultimate 10 Ball tournament was 5 minutes from my house. I vaguely heard about it at the time but I had been on a 15 year hiatus from the game and did not go. Only a month later, through some random twist of fate, I was bored one evening and picked up my trusty Byrne's Standard Book and started re-reading it. Next thing I knew I was hooked again and pool has been a daily part of my life since. But alas Badi is not coming back to Frisco, TX any time soon :)

If your group was all really serious pool players, I'd recommend Derby City which I think all such players have to do at least once. I wish I had found a way to get to the equivalent (Johnston City) when I was starting to play a lot. But there's not much else to do at the DCC venue.

With your group a much better choice is the CSI event at the Rio as Stu mentioned. Being from Texas the heat won't surprise you. Do you have a BCAPL league there?

I did not play in the event, but a couple of years back I was there for the Jr Nationals with my son, they had it on the same tables that the pros played on, it was lots of fun.

Plenty of room, a ton of Diamond 9 and 7 footers open 24 hrs (you could rent out a 9 footer for something like $10 for the night from 10-7 am or something like that), and lots of top pros were there.

If they have it at the same time as the USAPL/BCAPL nationals will be a good crowd and the pro events had plenty of seating available.

DCC is outside Louisville, so you could spend a day seeing some sights, though it can get a lil chilly in January. Of course the event is at the casino which would satisfy your gambling needs. The upside about the DCC is the variety of games the pros play. Take your pick!
