Welcome.

Your post raises a question to me on how people in other countries might determine what speed a player is...A,B,C...
How would you come to that conclusion?

Dave
Well I've got a friend who played the finnish "master league" in pool and I can challenge him in friendly matches and hold my own in a race to 5 if I get one game head start. Last time he gave me 2 games in a race to 4 10-ball but it was too much. I would estimate his skill at about A+. (hundred ball runner in 14.1. 7 racks in 9-ball etc). So there. I see your point in determining skill in the same manner (A, B C) but I find it useful to have some startinf point of reference. Also in local tournaments I receive no handicaps and I still usually get into the money. Hope this helps.

I would agree with you assessment. I think that too often we say something meant to qualify someone but really haven't thought it through.

Corey,
Your last sentence speaks volumes about how we as individuals should do more in sharing this forum with others who play pool.

Thanks and welcome to AZ Billiards.

Cool forum!
I started playing pool as a little kid on a ratty old table that we kept level with playing cards. Just out of high school in 87, I started working at a small local pool hall in early 88 for something to do, strictly 9 foot tables.

Looking back, I sure wish I would have figured out a way to buy some of the nicer sticks that used to be fairly common then. So many Joss, Schon, Richard Black, McDermott, Mali, Meucci... So much fun traveling in Oregon going to various pool halls, meeting people, getting sharked and learning a ton.

Unfortunately, as life moved along, so did my priorities and pool unfortunately had to take a backseat. It's always been a favorite pastime of mine. One which I wish I had never stopped playing. I've picked up my Meucci again for the first time in many years and I wish I could say after all these years it's like riding a bike ;)
One big regret was passing up the opportunity to buy some of the nicer Schon and Joss cues that used to fill the display cases at several shops. I'm really hoping to find an older Schon or Joss from the late 80s and early 90s. Kind of a way to finally get something I couldn't ever afford back then.

So glad to find this forum! Thank you guys for keeping it alive in here!

mrknight411...It would definitely be worth your while to seek out some private instruction from Tony Robles. Tony is an excellent instructor,
as well as the many other hats he wears (newborn family man being the newest hat...CONGRATS Tony & Gail on their new daughter!)
Seek him out at Amsterdam!

I'm glad to be here! This is my second attempt in life at pool, the first being in the early 90s. Two decades ago, Julians on 14th St in NYC was my pool home. I got good enough to be competitive and play in a few other places in the city, including Amsterdam (when it was uptown) and Chelsea Billiards. However, I was nowhere near the level of players like Ginky or Tony Robles, whom I was fortunate to watch live when the underground pool scene was still popular in NYC.

I would like to think I'm still young enough to at least be a good A player one day, if my mental and physical attributes don't fail. For now, I'm just a pool noob who loves to practice and study the game. Good luck to all!

Ironhead1970...We get asked this all the time..."what should I do to prepare for pool school?" The answer is...nothing! Everything you need to know you will learn from Randyg! Then, it's what you do with that knowledge after you leave school! Just continue doing what you're doing, and have fun. Pool school is only a few weeks away!

Hey guys I live in San Antonio, Texas I'm a 100% disabled veteran got into the game about 6 months ago. I don't want to hear it I'm in the local APA league. I play everyday at least a hour if not more working on my stroke and fundamentals I believe that without a strong base I'll never get good. I'm planning on going to a pool school up in Dallas in June for 3 days. You know of any drills that work on your stroke let me know. I do long straight in shots for 30 minutes first thing I do before anything else.

Thank you

Hello from SW Florida, help me buy a table

Hello from SW Florida.

We had a nice pool table for many years in Virginia, and left it behind when we moved to Florida (it was 9', and we literally built the room to hold it so we sold it with the house). Now after a dozen years without, we are looking to get one here. Means a LOT of rearranging of our current furniture, and we are still working on that.

We play for fun, but we used to play a lot with friends. I never go to the pool rooms here as I dislike smoke, so I have not played at all in the interim, and really anxious to get back to it.

I am hoping to get some advice to help do this. To make it work for us, we need a dining conversion, and also could use advice about dealers, but I suspect this thread is not the right place to ask.

Is there a right place, especially to ask for advice on the two dealers we have found? And about specific tables? I noticed the "review" page said "do not ask for one". Is this forum (in a new thread) appropriate for a "here is what we have, what we want, and who we are looking it"?

Also, just nice to browse many of the forums. Already learned a lot about rules quirks I had never heard before, as well as some general advice, while waiting for moderation to let me post.

Sorry... rambling now... anyway, hello, and thanks for hosting this place.

I'm Bill. I work at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh.
I've only been shooting a little over a year now after my brother and some old friends talked me into joining their team.
My background is physics, so I like to look at the technical aspects of the game.

Dave,
Thanks very much for the reply! I've seen some of your work, and am thrilled to get a direct response. Yes I do enjoy it!
The margin of error was particularly enlightening as it explained why those shots were so much harder than they seemed.

Once you start playing, you quickly realize the game isn't just geometry (except to 0th order), it's kinetics (slightly inelastic with non-point objects) and dynamics, and rotational dynamics, and friction. Most of physics is finding an approximate model that abstracts away the unnecessary complications. It's endlessly fascinating to think about why some rules of thumb work and when they start to break down.

What's going on everyone. Richie here from Chicago. Been playing recreationally all my life and about a year ago decided to take it seriously and bought my first cue (Predator SP 1st edition w/ 314). I'm definitely hooked. Since then bought like 4 more cues and Currently shooting with an OB 134 and 133 with classic+. Joined APA, BCA and an in house league. This forum is literally all I'm on when I'm not at work or shooting. It's great! Lol.

BTW, did any of you guys go to Big Dog in Des Moine last week for SVB vs Earl? One of the coolest experiences of my life. Literally hung out with Shane all night and shot with him. Really cool guy! Brandon Shuff was really cool too. Showed my friends and I some kicking tips that is really useful. Earl ended up leaving shortly after the match ended but did get to talk with him for a few minutes as he was leaving. Totally a different guy than you see on TV and when he's playing. Really approachable.

My name is Bob and I'm a pilot based in San Jose. I've recently decided to actually learn to play pool. My previous experience is just banging a few balls at the bar on the weekends so I have a ton of bad habits. When I was learning to fly I figured out fairly quickly that money spent on a good teacher pays higher dividends at first than equipment or books so I figured I'd get a pool instructor. The only thing I could find online is Mr. Seymore out of family billiards in S.F. I'm hoping for suggestions and realize I may have to try several places but cal billiards in fremont and edgies in milpitas are close if anyone instructs there.

Hello all,
I'm from the Tri-Cities area of East Tennessee and have recently picked up my cue and started playing pool again. I've joined 2 leagues, the APA and the USAPL. I prefer the USAPL due to the rules and the different challenge it presents. I started my own team in the APA and it's lots of fun but the rules leave a lot to be desired and I will most likely move my team to the USAPL if they are willing.
I just wanted to take a minute to share my experience with William Dominiak out of New York. I had a friend who owned one of his cues years ago and I never forgot how much nicer it hit than my old McDermott.
I contacted him for some pictures of his work and while he had very few; he did call me to ask my preferences in design, playing style and ability level. After some back and forth and his assurances of the quality of wood he would be using I agreed to have him craft this fine cue. I'm amazed at how nice it hits and how responsive it is when applying any spin at all. I would highly recommend anyone who is looking for something unique and very playable to check out his website and give him a call.

I attached pictures but don't see them in the body of this post. I hope they come through.
Ken

New guy here.

Hello everybody.

I was a pool enthusiast back in my college days 45+ years ago, and had a couple of tables in my homes over the years. But family kinda got in the way so I've been away from it for a long time. Now we're building our retirement house and I've laid out space for another 9 footer, so I'm actively looking at tables again.

I've been reading everything I could find about tables that I was interested in here while awaiting activation of my account, and I'm real disappointed to find that the table I most often played on in my youth is pretty much considered sub-standard. That would be the Gandy Big G. I literally grew up on them. I grew up in Macon, knew Roy and Kim and the Big G was all I ever played on here in the southeast. And I had two of them in my houses over the years. In short, I loved them and was planning on finding another one now and getting someone here in The Atlanta area to refurb it. Oh well, back to the drawing board I guess!

I'm afraid I'll be asking a lot more questions here than I'll be answering, so ya'll tolerate me best you can.

Thanks to all.

What's up everyone. Joined a couple weeks ago. Got some pretty harsh backlash in my first post for asking a question about CTE so I learned fast that we got some crazies here haha.

Anyway, been casually playing pool since I was a teenager but decided about 2 months ago I was going to take it a little more serious. I get to the table about 2-3 week. Mainly focusing on CTE Pro One at this point and still been getting my head around the market and current technology preparing to buy my first ever cue. Kind of excited.

Hey,

Been playing pool since I was a little kid, I'm extremely casual. Generally speaking I beat bar players and can hang with some league players. So that puts me somewhere between sucking and above average depending on how the balls are rolling for me on a given evening. I live in West Virginia where you have to go dramatically out of your way to find a real pool hall, everything in Charleston is 8ft bar tables surrounded by noisy drunks--but I shoot at my local bar 1 or 2 times a week(mostly by myself as I go very early in the day).

I'm a full time Computer Specialist by trade who's also working on a 2nd degree part time and a newish father, so pretty busy. In addition to pool my hobbies include shooting guns, video games, women and drawing. My favorite pros are Buddy Hall and Jeanette Lee. I work nights with pretty much nothing to do(such as right now) so figured I would create an account to kill time with since I love pool and this forum seems fairly active.

Thanks,
