tightening pockets

I have an Olhousan 8' pool table with 5" pockets. Can I place shims to make them 4.5"? If so, how hard is it? About 25 years ago I put new felt on a table but I didn't redo the rails so I'm a bit familiar with taking the table apart and reassembling it.

My opinion is that that is too much space to close up with shims. The proper way to do it is to extend the sub-rail with wood and use regular thickness facings to get your desired pocket opening. Others may disagree.

Agree, 1/4" shims make the pockets play funny - not just a little, it's quite noticeable.

In my case I was restoring an old table I'd never played before, and didn't know if I'd like it. So I couldn't justify the expense of shipping the rails to someone, or getting a specialist to travel here and do it. And at the time, I didn't feel confident enough to extend the subrails myself (I feel differently now, I should have just sacked up and done it).

If you already know you like the table and how it plays, pay the extra $ and do it right.

You really need to extend the sub rails to do it so the table plays right. Extend the sub rails. put on new cushions then cut the pockets to the correct size and angles. Olhausen tables have a notoriously bad pocket angles from the factory.

No. In my opinion it makes the pockets play terrible. They often reject well hit shots, making balls down the rail can be very difficult.

Thanks for the info. I'll see if I can find some one to extend the sub-rails and do it right.
