How is the ringwork on the butt in a different position than the shaft?

Good catch. My eye could see something was off, but didn't pick it up right away. The rings on the joint are facing same way as rings on shaft, rather than typical backwards.

I wondered the same thing. I don't have any history on this cue. The joint looks like buck horn and the Hoppe ring is Ivory. Looks like it could be a Pierce cue to me.

If Jim Pierce made that cue, he should buy it back to burn it - this is way off his usual standard. This cue looks like a hobbyist tried something out. If it plays well, keep it and enjoy it.

The shaft is probably not original to the cue as the spacing between the rings are off besides the fact that it is backwards. The butt of the cue is very well made with quality materials. It's hard to tell from the pics, but the black linen wrap is done better than a lot of custom cues I have seen. Based on the writing inside, the cue maker made 45 cues before this one, which is a lot, if the person was a hobbyist.
