Somewhat Disappointed with Layout ....

I have attended Pool Tournaments at the Sands Regency for more years than I can remember ... In the past, the Smoke in the Room was downright awful and now that has changed for the better ... Spectator seating over the years has gone from marginal to good to great and now to horrible, especially at this event ... The Tables were Great, the Lights were Great and those are all-important things for the Players ... However, there was only one little "piddly" row of chairs against the walls for Spectators and, "if" you were lucky enough to get one of those precious seats, invariably, those who couldn't find a seat would just line up in front of you and all you could see was their backsides ... Granted, the event is mainly for the Players ... BUT ... The Sands Regency expects a large contingency of Spectators who will rent rooms, eat, drink and GAMBLE while attending the Tournaments ... My friends and I were so tired from having to stand during every match that we just retired to our rooms afterwards and NEVER participated in any of the Casino offerings ... One more thing ... In years past, there were attendants on duty at all times to keep the room clean and free of litter, especially all the Beer Bottles and drink glasses that cluttered every Players Tables at this event ... I realize times are tough and budgets are tight, but I certainly hope to see a return to excellence in future Tournaments at the Sands ...

The tables and lights were good, but the racks were HORRIBLE. Everyone commented on how bad they were, and it took away from the quality of the games themselves. I am convinced that having the best equipment (Diamond tables and lights, Aramith balls) can be diminished by having those crappy racks.

They kept saying "next year......, next year....." well, I was there THIS year, and I was pissed that I felt I couldn't be provided with adequate equipment to play my best. I will return next year, but I hope they change a couple things, like seating as you stated.

The seating was pretty bad, but with that layout I don't know if there was a whole lot they could really do. Hopefully they can find a way to get the # of tables they need and provide a little room for the railbirds.

Ric and the crew put on a great tourny and deserve alot of thanks.

Yes, of course, it was a fine Tournament and the Officials worked hard to keep it running smoothly ... especially with the large number of players who turned out for 8-Ball ... I'm glad the crappy racks were mentioned above ... As for the Seating ... given the number of tables in the room, it was impossible to provide adequate seating for Spectators ... I hope they decide to reduce the number of tables and get back to a decent seating arrangement for those who love to watch ...
Looking forward to June and the Reno Open 9-Ball at the Sands ...

I heard that event is no longer going to be held at the Sands. As I understand it, the former Reno Open and the USPPA events that go along with it are now going to be held at Hard Times in Sacramento, as the "Summer Jamboree."

Part of being 65 years old is the loss of memory .... Somone told me about the location change a while back and I just forgot .... Hard Times is only 25 miles from me and I won't have to pay for lodging ...... Cool !!!!

Maybe I'm wrong, but I was at the Sands for the Bar table tourney and was told that just this upcoming June is being changed to Hardtimes. Something about not being able to book the dates they wanted with the Sands. Also, I heard mention of doubling the added money for the December tourney! $20,000 added! I hope it's true.

Racks

This is the first year we (BCA Pool League/playbca.com) were the tournament director of this event. We made several little changes. The event had lights for the first time and we had score counters on each light. Each table had a good bridge that will hold up and not damage the cue. We take pride in improving every event every year.

The triangles were not the best - but they were not horrible. Diamond is not using wooden racks much any more - too many of them walked. We have a new Diamond rack however, the first run did not meet our specs and was not available at the Bar Table event. We are told they will be available for the May event at the Riviera.

Many people assume a triangle is bad because the head ball does not go all the way into the corner arch. A good rack only touches the head ball at two points. I think most of the racks used were OK - the main problem is there is minimal finger space and can be difficult to remove the rack without disturbing the balls.

Remember next year 10 ball is being added.
