Two old guys on the road.

An old friend and I are planning a road adventure thru Alabama, Miss. and La. We want to watch high quality pool on 9 by 4 1/2 foot tables. Where would you guys on here recommend as possibilities for the most bang for or foray ? This will probably be our last opportunity since we are both getting along in age. We want to have fun and watch great pool.

If you two get to Birmingham, stop by our bar (Blue Collar in Pelham). Not great pool and only a dozen Valleys in great condition. However, you could have some fun and just tell my Son I said some wings or burgers, fries and a beer is on me. It's very close to poppas and bumpers is 15 minutes away where they have 9 footers.

Hope you have a fun, safe trip.

Lacy's Cue in Chalmette, La and Buffalo Billiards in New Orleans, La are some Hot Spots.. I also know a few on the Mississippi side.

Breakers in Mobile, AL is a good spot if you can stay up all night. That is usually where Cliff Joyner can be found. Runway billiards is down the road a bit from Breakers. Sometimes things happen there as well. In Mississippi there is Skeeter's in Gulfport. They have some 9 foot Diamonds. It's hit or miss there on running up on action. Seems most of the players have pretty much abandoned the joint due to new ownership.
Keep heading west and you will find Lacy's Cue in Chalmette, LA. It is probably the premiere poolroom on (or near) the gulf coast. Plenty of tables, several tournaments, and lots of good players show there as well. I would say the hottest action spot would be Buffalo's in New Orleans. Every time I've been there it was wall to wall action. Not as nice a place as Lacy's, but the equipment is good and so is the action.
I'm sure there are more places but as I am new to the area the ones I have mentioned are the only ones I know of, with 9 footers anyway...

Lacey's Cue - Chalmette, LA

It's not hard to find. There isn't much in Chalmette, on the two highways, except for a refinery and old houses. If you get lost, ask where the old bowling alley is.

Dave,
Was that originally a bowling alley or a skating rink?

Starting trip from South Carolina

Well, if I was making that trip, I would head straight toward Pensacola. I know there is a room or two there, I just don't know the names. From there I'd head west, stopping in Mobile (Breakers and Runway Billiards), Biloxi (Skeeter's and Bumpers, if no pool action, spend a day in the casinos), Chalmette (Lacy's Cue), New Orleans (Buffalo Billiards and Jamie Farrel's place), then circle up through Lafayette (I think that's White Diamond Billiards), then head northeast to go through Ohio and Indiana then down through Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, and back home.

Just my .02 worth. Good luck and I hope you guys have a great time!

Another place that is worth visiting is Emerald Billiards in New Iberia, LA and don't forget to get an Emerald Burger. Uh-huh!

Very large pool room not far from White Diamond Billiards in Lafayette. Worth the visit for sure.

Is pool and going on road with your friend the whole motivation behind the trip? If so, you may want to consider Florida unless you have must-see stops on your itinerary.

I live in the Tarpon Springs, Florida area and there are quite a few thriving pool halls in close proximity to me. There's Capone's in Spring Hill, Hammerheads in New Port Richey, Stix in Palm Harbor, Strokers in Palm Harbor, JJ's in Dunedin, Family Billiards in Clearwater, Corner Pockets in Largo and quite a few other rooms I'm missing. And that doesn't even take Tampa into account...

You could spend a week in Pinellas county, Florida and hit a different pool hall every day and never need to travel more than an hour at a time. By all accounts, I live in a pool spoiled environment compared to some of the doom and gloom stories I read here about rooms shutting down all over...

This thread and the posts from members of this forum got me to thinking. Someone should consider making such a road trip and record the memories of a trip, writing about each location visited in a blog and essentially keeping the readers up to date on their experiences.

The travelers could schedule visits to pool rooms that wanted the exposure, contacting the owners in advance, making sure that they were up to the challenge of a pool room critic and the exposure.

Yes pool is the main objective. Florida is nice in the winter which is the probable season for the trip of course so are Al, Ms, and La
