Ivory ferrules - is a tip pad needed?

For 20 plus years

I played with an ivory ferrule on my josswest. No pad, and I used to cue to break. Only time I broke a ferrule, I was late for league, it was very cold outside. I went in and it was my time to play, yep, grabbed the cold cue, broke and shattered the ferrule.

On a side note, if there was 2 identical cues one with a pad one without, blindfolded, how many people could tell the difference?

Opinions will vary but the rule in my shop is, If you want an ivory ferrule, You have to get the pad.

Same rule. I play with a 1" ivory ferrule and have preferred ivory ferrules for as long as I can remember. I keep a few blanks in stock just in case someone needs one. But if that ferrule goes out, or I replace a tip on one...it's getting a pad. Your only choice in the matter is black or red.
