"Standard" Butt diameter? (Behind Wrap)

It may also depend on the woods used for the building. So I would suggest it's up to the preference of the cuemaker with regards to the woods, construction, the balance and so on. It's all serves the goal what kind of a cue he wants to get.

1.25" at the end of the butt cap is pretty standard. It can be anything you want it to be, but that's pretty much the norm.

qbuilder is right, 1.25 has been the standard since the late 1970's. It can be whatever the maker wants but smaller is thin and bigger is fat.

No such thing as standard bottom diameter as there is no standard taper either .
The old school cues were popularly at some .840" at the joint and one angle down to the bottom at around 1.275".

If the cue maker wanted a fatter forearm but not fatter handle, he'd have to come up with 2 to 3 angles or a curve . I can tell you mine is 1.250" to 1.235" at the bottom while it has a thicker bottom of the forearm ( actually much thicker ) than a usual straight .840-1.275 taper.

And in reality, the bottom diameter should really not concern you .
What you really should measure is the middle of the wrap and the bottom b/c that's where you will usually grip the cue.

I believe cues became thinner when cue maker started using really heavy stainless steel joint collars.

Thank you all. you're all pretty much right. I finally got with Dennis Searing, from my old stomping grounds of south fla. We go back 35 years when we used to play each other. He must of spent a couple of hundred hours on the phone with Gus, picking his brain back then before his death in 88'

Dennis made me a dressed up 5/16 14 piloted with collars, sneaky pete, rambow style, bumperless with polished bolt , 2 shafts 19.3 oz. Best player i ever owned. What makes this cue rare....is it is the only true sneaky pete, Dennis has ever signed! "D. Searing 8/94" Dennis told me himself.

I quit smoking and quit pool and I sold the cue to a C player who was sweating the 95' Andy Mercer Memorial in March of 95' in Las Vegas. I've been trying to track down that cue for many many years.....the only thing i remembered about the guy who bought the cue, is he drove a moped, and he's no longer in Las Vegas. lol Obviously hind sight will always be 20/20

I think that cue was up for sale not that long ago. I believe the cue was either rosewood or Purple Heart and had the signature. Tan buttcap maybe if memory serves correct

I agree that 1.25 is pretty standard and anything below 1.240 is getting thin and anything over 1.260 is getting thick. I think that .020" range is where probably 80% of cues fall into.

Unfortunately that wasn't the cue. The butt was an existing full splice blank hustler, he made two shafts, and signed the forearm. He told me he never signed a hustler unless he made the blank, but in this case he might of been an oversight. I know for a fact that the bio on the blue book of cues of Dennis is inaccurate. Dennis was still in Hollywood, Fl in his garage in the summer of 1994' He built that cue, that i referenced in earlier posts, and also converted and refinished a dufferin to a bumperless hoppe style, with a polished bolt, and built a new shaft. The finishes on both cues had that deep luster. Both cues were 19 + inches front balanced, and hit real well. I still kick myself in the ass that i sold those cues to an unknown B-player who left Vegas. No name no nothing. Just gave me $600 cuz i got broke gambling in the casinos in spring of 1995' :-(

I definitely notice your different taper when I play with the cue. My had is usually between just inside the handle section and the very end of the butt on the cue and, while I haven't measured it, it almost feels as though the radius is decreasing!
