Do different plug materials affect hit (For Pin Changing)

Hi All,

Would like to seek some advice involving a process during pin changing.

There are times when a plug is needed while changing from one pin to another due to various reasons such as different pin size, different TPI etc. Does the material of the plug matter in this case? Or basically the main function of the plug installed in the butt is simply to hold the pin in place?

Additionally, is there a standard length to be cut for the plug and a standard OD? Or it varies from cue to cue?
