Why do Pool Players Unconsciously NOT Want to Improve?

"Systems underlie every phenomenon, and are everywhere one looks for them. They are limited only by the observer’s capacity to comprehend the complexity of the observed entity, item or phenomenon."

This is a useful definition of a system because it does exist "everywhere one looks for them". When unable to believe in anything new we'll be stuck and unable to improve. This becomes a habit and before long it will influence our entire life.

After playing a lot of my best matches subconsciously (in The Zone) it is challenging to explain some of the shots I was able to perform. I can't even try to explain some of the phenomenal things I've seen (from many players) in the midst of a 20 hour session - they do seem "supernatural". However, there's no "magic," this is done by a high level of knowledge, training and experience in competition.

Efren and I have battled many times and it's not uncommon to see these shots come up regularly. We make them consistently because we have a system to do so. These systems may be habits for us, and you can learn to create these positive habits too. It only takes an open mind to new ways and means of processing information.

When someone's really struggling to improve and they don't believe in developing a better system, they may unconsciously not want to improve. This is actually a common human nature trait and can be seen in all walks of life, sports, and business.

The mind can pretty much achieve what you can conceive so make sure you at least "think" you're improving every day. Sometimes we just have to "fake it, til we make it," and see ourselves as a better player, in a better job, or in a better relationship before it actually happens.

I totally agree.

I've been faking it for the past 4+ years and I've continued to steadily improve.

You gotta want it.....and have to set aside your pride to do so.

People live up or down to their expectations. I used to enter open competitions against the best in the area, sometimes best in the world. Many of the competitors were saying they couldn't beat this one or that one, good news for me because the ones putting a cap on their performance could often be beaten by those that didn't. I might not beat the best, but I often beat those that "couldn't beat the best". Once in awhile I even beat the best, one event or one time anyway!

covering all the bases

Really? Again?

CJ likes to ask questions and give his idea of the answer in the same post. If he was like some posters with a handful of accounts others could not bother posting in his threads and just watch him talking to himself for days.

I wonder if admin would give him a special dispensation so there could be a CJ, CJ-1, CJ-2, CJ-3, and so on. At least he would agree with himself. What is funny is watching somebody putting up strawmen in an argument with themselves only making statements that their other ID can easily disprove or discredit.

Hmmm gotta talk to Dave. Whatcha think of Hu-1, Hu-2, Hu-3, nebbermind, I think a split personality helps with this kind of thing. I get a headache just thinking about it!

I've had countless people come up and tell me I shouldn't play "player x" because I can't win. This was always humorous, because they had no idea what they were saying.

My response was "if that's the case would you care to bet on them, we cover all bets". ---- you could have heard a mouse spit in a cotton ball. ;)

And our Game was their Teacher.

That's right, bud, whether someone thinks they can, or thinks they can't, they're right.

Keep up the good work, next time we're together I have some cool things to share.

Play Well.

...This is a useful definition of a system because it does exist "everywhere one looks for them". When unable to believe in anything new we'll be stuck and unable to improve. This becomes a habit and before long it will influence our entire life.<--???..Is that called "tough love" ?

...After playing a lot of my best matches subconsciously (in The Zone) it is challenging to explain some of the shots I was able to perform. <--Please, don't try ! ...I can't even try to explain some of the phenomenal things I've seen (from many players) in the midst of a 20 hour session - they do seem "supernatural". However, there's no "magic," this is done by a high level of knowledge, training and experience in competition. <--I assume this means, you are the only one who has ever played well, in a long, tough session !

....Efren and I have battled many times and it's not uncommon to see these shots come up regularly. We make them consistently because we have a system to do so.<--I'm guessing this would be 'TOI', huh ? ..These systems may be habits for us, and you can learn to create these positive habits too. It only takes an open mind to new ways and means of processing information...

Once again, I must ask..Do you EVER re-read your posts, before you hit submit ?

CJ likes to ask questions and give his idea of the answer in the same post. If he was like some posters with a handful of accounts others could not bother posting in his threads and just watch him talking to himself for days.

Hu <--Two great minds, with very similar thoughts Hu !

CJ, I am sure you will construe this as 'negative input' on my part, but I must say, this is one of the worst examples you have EVER made, of why player's don't improve enough to play as well as you !..You have boasted, (once again) that you and Efren, or SVB, are smarter than anyone else in pool, and tried to make every other average good player, look like an idiot !.....Fortunately, Efren and SVB do not feel an obsession to do, as you like to do ! :sorry:

When will you learn, it is not all about YOU ?..Why don't you just say, "Anyone who doesn't believe in my superior philosophy of 'TOI', is an idiot" ? (sorry, I guess you already have said that) After all, isn't that your main thrust ?..It is hard to imagine, that you have people who believe that you are "Always right" when in fact it is YOU, that have a very limited, and misguided set of values !...Get a grip on reality, or your fans will soon realize, that you are just promoting yourself, and throwing EVERYONE else under the bus ! :(

PS..It would be nice, if you could somehow, "subconsiously" realize, that you are making a complete fool of yourself, with your condescending way of enlightening us all in the "ways of the world" !

Why do you keep "editing" your post? Do you read the comments as people respond and then change yours accordingly to fit what you are trying to express? I just saw that you changed and added to your original post right after I read it.

I could say "you are making a complete fool of yourself" by constantly following CJ around and trying to dispute his TOI philosophy. Whether you agree with using TOI one time, none of the time, some time, or all of the time, I will say that "ANYONE who DOESN'T think that TOI is a tool that some players find beneficial is an IDIOT!"

TOI may not be for you or anybody else for that matter, but CJ is providing information that may help people improve their game. Take it or leave it. He isn't charging anyone unless you buy the DVD and he has even been giving it away a lot of the time. What are you giving away?

How did YOU play? Why don't you come on here and explain what you did to become a HOF player? Was it by your actual playing ability or just because you kept coming on the web forums and berating everyone until they finally just gave up and gave you an award to shut you up? From the sound of a lot of people at onepocket.org and people coming here from there, it seems you created quite a ruckus over there for a long time too and wore out your welcome? Is that true, or just the typical rumors?

Could it be an issue with motivation that keeps pool players from improving?

Probably because it's impossible to unconsciously do anything...

Now subconsciously doing something or not doing something is a whole different story.

Jaden

just messin wth you CJ...

Good point, however, maybe it's much deeper than this.

Maybe it has something to do with motivation? ;)

The unconscious mind consists of the processes in the mind that occur automatically and are not available to introspection, and include thought processes, memory, affect, and motivation.

In the field of psychology, the subconscious refers to that part of consciousness that we are unaware of. It is information that we are not actively aware of in the moment, but that can influence us nonetheless, such as things that are heard, seen or remembered.

The unconscious mind, on the other hand, is a term coined by Freud to refer to a part of the mind that cannot be known by the conscious mind, and includes socially unacceptable ideas, wishes and desires, traumatic memories and painful emotions that have been repressed.

It was NOT meant as a compliment !..It was meant as a 'wake-up call' to your overbearing insensitivity !..Why am I not surprised, you didn't learn anything from the old master ? :groucho:

PS..You are very fortunate you avoided my prime !..Otherwise, I may have let you be 'assistant night manager', at CJ's Billiard Palace, after I won it from you ! :p :p :p

PPS...Heres an edit for you, Hawiian Eye !..I would have made you 'assistant night dishwasher' at CJ's, because you can't quite come to grips with YOUR inferiority complex !..Just kidding, I know your hero needs your [sic] valuable help !...

CJ,
Back in the late 90's in college I read Tony Robbins' book and listened to his tapes about a thousand times (BTW, I recommend everyone hear put down their danish and do the same). One of his tapes was about financial self-sabotage. I didn't understand what on earth would make someone not want to be financially successful then, and I still don't. But I gather that it happens.

Reminds me of a comment Grady made in TAR1. Half way through the match he recalls a gambling match he blew losing a few thousand. Despondent, he walked into the casino and up to a craps table. Saying "I wanted to punish myself" he bet everything in his wallet and as fate would have it he walked away an hour later up $60,000. Ya never know.
