That was me and i probably was. I was around 19 or 20 and VERY naive when I met Jack. Going on the road with him was quite possible the craziest thing I have ever done. I almost completely ruined my life and it took me a long time to get away from him and an even longer time to recover. Needless to say my life is WAY different now. Im in good health, happy and JACK FREE. lol

Don't worry, we've all been in bad marriages, so welcome to the club called LIFE!

Here's how Hines used to play, in case anyone wonders. This is the finals of the 1988 Ohio Open vs. Earl Strickland (the match is in 7 parts).

I finally got around to watching, thx for sharing. That was some beautiful pool. Jack out played and totally had him, until Earls insane and heartbreaking (to Jack) kick on the 6, out of a lockup safe. Crazy good match!

I run into him in the Long Beach,CA. area all the time. He plays a lot of bar tournaments. Mike Massey came through town recently. He had some conversations with Jack. He can confirm Jack is here.

i didnt know he was still in this world. surprise to me.

but for the original poster of the thread. you got what you deserved for letting any player you back hold the money. you pay and collect always.
double plus for someone with a not so good rep.
then again realize that backing anyone is a losing prop for anyone but the shooter who cant win even with his own money.

Why is it only low lifes "get" pool?

Funny thing, I have had better dealings with people I met in bars and poolhalls than with men of the cloth and churchgoers who describe themselves as good christians. Problem is, some people expect to find lowlifes in poolhalls. They look past thirty good people to the one lowlife, "Aha, just what I suspected!"

If I had pursued my pool talent in earnest, I would in all likelihood, have gone that route. Everything's a hustle down that road.

Among the high line gamblers and hustlers I've been around in my life, their word was good when it came to money owed, loaned or "invested." And then there are the other "gamblers" hanging around the poolrooms and casinos. With them anything goes, and believe me I've seen every conceivable con game. I got caught in a couple of traps in my earlier years but they turned out to be valuable lessons that helped me later in life. As I got older and involved in other money making ventures I became much more aware of what to look out for and never to trust anything without verifying it on my own. I could probably write another book about some of the shady deals I've been approached with by some very charming salesman (and even one very attractive woman who worked at a casino where I had a business). I'll just say my early life experiences taught me how to smell a rat.

My only advice to the younger crowd on here is that if someone tells you they can take your 50 grand and give you a 50% return (75G's total) in three months they are lying, 100%. If there was such a deal they wouldn't need you! There is no perfect investment that will always work. Every situation is different in business, real estate or owning a pig farm. Check all boxes before investing your money!

I recently saved a dear friend of mine over 200K he was ready to hand over to his old 'friend' who had long been his sponsor at AA. My friend inherited a large sum of money and right away his long time "buddy" came up with a plan for him to invest a portion of it. I got him to show me the "contract," and it was the biggest piece of crap imaginable. He didn't believe me and I told him he could let my sister look at it too, and she is an attorney. She laughed when she saw it. My friend found it hard to believe someone who had been so close to him for so long would screw him over, but I made it clear to him that was what was going to happen if he gave him that money. I said you might get a few small "interest" payments, and then something would go wrong with the deal. There would be delay after delay and finally nothing. I pulled him back from the brink of despair, how it feels when you know you've been taken for a ride.

just an opinion. far from any 'attack'. if you think that was an attack i'm sorry your skin is so thin.

There were always a few fringe guys around. I enjoyed their company for the most part. They spent a lot of time trying to get to me because I was never without a fair sized chunk of ready cash. It didn't take them long to find out that I could genuinely be pie eyed shit faced drunk and still kick their asses on a pool table since that wasn't their main hustle. They were marginally competent on a table and would happily hustle there if they could get a banger or typical drunk on the table. With me, they always wanted to get me in a card or dice game when I was drunk where they would flat cheat. Nope, ain't happening!

I farmed one for about six months. He was broke most of the time so in the early evening I would always lose ten or fifteen dollars to him. With a little seed he would get in action and do OK. A couple times a week he would be doing quite well and I would get in a late night game with him getting my week long investment back from him and then some! This was working so well that I was thinking about trying to line up about a half-dozen guys like him for a stable. Didn't work out, each needed to be in a separate place and there was too much work involved. It was a fun idea though!

These guys were totally without honor. I knew one that would find a way to cheat his own brother several times a year. "Friend" was just another name for chump. Amazing how some survived, some didn't. One's girlfriend came into my business in a bind. She mentioned that Eddy had gotten killed a few months back down in the quarters. I started to express my condolences, she had been with him a few years. "Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy." No that didn't work. I tried again, didn't sound any better. Finally I just shrugged my shoulders. Eddie had tried to sell me a car that wasn't his and a truck with a four speed that wasn't a four speed. She said he had gotten killed gambling but I'd have made book it was a dope deal gone bad.
