Mosconi Cup Team Announced

You are missing my point Lou. People are saying that John Schmidt is going to help mentor the Justins. My point is that they don't need it and to be blunt John Schmidt can't teach them anything about that. He has as much experience with the Mosconi Cup pressure as they do. Now if it was say Johnny Archer then that argument for having him on the team would hold some weight to it. Schmitts value is that he will hopefully be a good teammate which I have every indication he will be. The catch is in him refinding his form and killer instinct. And this is nothing that I wouldn't say directly to him.

If they wanted a teammate to help others deal with pressure than Oscar should have been the choice. Ask him sometime about going down to Mexico to places where the US Army wouldn't go into and playing pool for more money than John Schmidt has won this decade in playing pool.

Watchez, I don't know or care what other people are saying, particularly about "mentoring."

What I'm saying is that sometimes team chemistry is a weird thing. And sometimes the right guy, saying the right thing, and the right time can make great things happen. That can be in the dugout, the locker room, over dinner, and maybe standing shoulder to shoulder over a pool table.

As I said, I agree with many of the issues Stu raised about John's selection. However, *it's done* and the point I was making is that I can see why, maybe/perhaps, Mark made the pick he did.

because one fellow followed all the rules and proved his mettle and he's now on the outside, looking in.

oh, wait, correction, he's been named the offensive shot specialist or some such nonsense.

best,
brian kc <---- woo this ;)

translation: you're not going to play but this should make it feel better.

best,
brian kc

Lots of guys have proved their mettle, followed rules, etc. But there could only be eight and now five. Do the math: more than one player was going to be left on the outside looking in :-(

Boo.

Hoo.

It happens, get over it.

happy to play :)

The Justins grew up in St Louis pool -- places like the Sportscenter and Billiards on Broadway. I know not a huge arena like will be in England but believe me if you could play in those places, you can play anywhere. Bergman is 3 times jr national champion and won every time he was expected to win. The first time we took him to Vega$ I think he was 13, every time he hit a ball their were literally a 100 people watching just his match and he ran out like water. In 2008 when we set up the match against Morra for about $13k a side and he was what 19 years old?, Justin beat him so bad they never made a DVD of it. They don't need John Schmidt to teach them how to deal with pressure, the crowd, sharking or anything else.

Agreed.

Once again, Watchez is the teacher.

From the AZ article...

In order to maximise their chances of glory, Wilson will be bringing the whole squad to Blackpool with the three non-playing members filling very specific roles as he leaves no stone unturned.

Jeremy Sossei is tasked as Offensive Coordinator in the build up and during the event while Oscar Dominguez fulfils the role of Defensive Coach. The eighth member of the squad Brandon Shuff has a technical role as Special Shots Instructor.
Do these titles actually mean anything? Just say that you're bringing them along anyway without conjuring up patronizing titles for them.

Mosconi Cup selections question

I just want to know one thing: How in the hell could they ever leave off Mike Dechane?

Mark has been watching him and the other 8 play...

Mark has been watching all of the mosconi 8 play for several months...He's gotten to see how they work together as a team, who looks up to who and how they interrelate with each other.

I wouldn't second guess Mark on his selections even though I would've liked to see Oscar play. I consider both Oscar and John friends, and both are excellent, well seasoned players.

John's lack of playing on the scene has had little to do with his ability to compete and more to do with his priorities based on risk/benefit assessment and what he's WANTED to do with his time.

My prediction is that regardless of how well team USA does, both John and Shane will have good results in this years' mosconi cup.

I agree with this 100 percent. I've known and seen John Schmidt compete many different times -- tournaments and gambling. He's got what it takes to succeed. He doesn't give up the ship when he's stuck or coming from behind, like some players we know are wont to doing. John digs his heels in and fights back even harder. I have always admired that about him. He's got wisdom of the game, and he can get there. Make no mistake about that.

There are only five slots available, so these are the five players that have been deemed best suited for this Mosconi Cup environment.

Personally, I'm now getting a little sick and tired of all of us arguing about who's the best, who shouldn't be there, who's selected, and who's not. Sheesh! I think we've all had a chance to get it out of our systems by now, right? :D

It's time to move on to the next pool topic. ;)

One prerequisite for someone who wants to pontificate on AZ forums should
be a basic knowledge of the subject that they want to discuss.

So threads get clogged up by people who 'cannot understand'' why Mike Dechaine or Skylar are not in the final five.

Read the friggin' earlier posts and you would see the reasons. If you cannot be bothered to do that then what value is your post. It is completely without merit and I waste valuable time opening and reading what turns out to be garbage.

Why they are not in final 5 can be summarised as:
Skylar= bar player
Mike Dechaine= player barred

Different.....So John S playing one time in the Mosconi 8 years ago is gonna help with that??? Nice stretch.

My point is that Bergman for sure has had more pressure during his pool career than Schmidt has ever had.

I'm guessing playing in the finals of the US Open is right up there with pressure filled situations. I think they are both seasoned players that will represent the US well.
