Pool Players Suck!!

Jose Garcia of Q-Ball Billiards in Vineland, NJ, hosted a qualifier for the Allen Hopkins MILLION DOLLAR SHOOTOUT on Saturday the 12, He posted info here, he made phone calls, he spent money on food, he tried to do something good for our sport! He recieved about 16 responces saying players would show up and guess what?... only 4 players showed up!!! Me, Eddie Abraham, Park Shin and Mika Immonen. Two other guys donated for a total of 6 players(A c players put up $150 for the experience!). I drove 3 hrs each way to help support Jose, our sport, and the winner of the free entry into the SHOOT OUT! I didn't drive all that way to put up $350 and play against these MONSTERS for no reason at all!!! But I did!! We put up the $350 and played a double elim race to 9 for the cash!! At least I had the BALLS to show up!!

No wonder our sport is suffering!!

If you call somebody and tell them you are going to be at an event then, grab your money, your cue and your BALLS, and show up!!

Play..

Mike,

I didn't say I was going to play this event - but - why would I or any amateur put up $350 to play against 16 players like Mika and Park Shin.

Either make it 16 PROS , $350 and Ill come watch.

or

16 OPEN / AMs - No pros allowed. And I'll play.

Honestly - Look at Mika's record : He got 2nd in the USOPEN and 1st place on the admiral pool championship and he plays in the mosconi cup.

Id rather but $350 on a number in roulette for a chance to win $12,250 in roulette.

Hello, I believe Jose said he had about 16 players that confirmed they would show up! Not all of them were pros. I wanted to play to help support Jose and to support the guy that won the free entry!! I felt it was good for the sport! As for putting up $350 to play against these monsters, I felt it would be a great experience! I have been playing alot for the last 2 years against these top players and I can tell you one thing....THEY ALL MISS!!! I have had tournament wins over Mike Davis, Frankie Hernandez, Shin Park, Earl Strickland, George San Soucci, Jeromy Sossei and Steve Lillis just to name a few. The only way to get better is to step up and GO FOR IT!!! You have to play the greatest players to become a great player. These players CAN be beat! Have confidance in your game and don't be afraid to step it up!! You might not be the favorite but don't count yourself out!!
The last time I played Shin Park in a tourny I beat him 9 to 1!!!

I was and still am pissed that so many players said "I'll be there" and then they didn't show!! I would not have made the 6 hr round trip to play just those 3 players for $350, but because I was there and I would have spent the money anyway I said LETS GO FOR IT!!!

I don't want to cause any waves here as i really do understand where you are coming from.

BUT, There are a lot of different factors that go into a tournament decision. Especially, when the entry fee is $350.

First off, regardless of how many people say they are going to be there, your always gonna have some people who just say they will show up, just so they won't be bothered about it again. Then they can blame car trouble, or bad sleep or use whatever excuse they want when they don't show.

Then you have your legitimate reasons.
I for one, won't play in a tournament if that tournament means me getting up early in the morning, unless i get a fantastic nights sleep. If it was a messed up sleep, then it really serves no purpose for me to even try as i will be tired the entire day and fire everything into the rail. I know i'm not alone, as i know plenty of people who won't play if they don't FEEL right, for whatever reason.

Seeing as this qualifier was most likely going to draw out some top talent who didn't feel like ponying up the full $5000, your really hard pressed to get people who want to donate to their cause if there are no prizes for 2nd 3rd and 4th place so that they could take their shot and got paid for not winning.

I mean i know the pool world has its fair share of degenerate gambling junkies, but still, i don't know any of them that just want to GIVE their money away. If they know they can't win, why bother. It's not like your talking about the local $10 tournament. Your talking $350. That's 35 weeks of local tournaments where you CAN say, get up there and go for it cause it's only $10.

Plus, let us not forget, that there are a lot of top talented pool players, who don't have 2 nickels to rub together. So if they can't find someone who is willing to put them in, its not going to happen for them.

And finally. Pool, for $350 bucks, is a BUSINESS decision. People aren't going to want to play unless they have a reasonable chance to cash, and since this was most likely a winner take all tournament, is someone who is not in dead punch who has to weigh all the factors into it really gonna want to cough up the money?

Not everyone has your desire and ambition to compete.
I mean, it's nice that you had the drive/desire to go and take a shot, but you can't be pissed off if others didn't feel the same way.

Hello Superstar, I agree with you 100%, but the peole that told Jose they would show up(I'm not going to mention any names) are top quality players with that had every chance of winning! It wasn't like he told a bunch of bangers to come down and they all said sure no problem. He recieved phone calls confirming players apperience.
It just makes me sad to see pool recieving another BLACK EYE!
This game is suffering enough as it is.
Stuff like this makes room owners weiry about holding events like this! Do you think Jose will be quick to hold another event like this any time soon?
I was pissed after my 3hr drive back home and I neede to vent!!
I'M BETTER NOW!!
Thanks for letting me air my frustrations!!
I WILL FADE this past weekend, like any good player should do and get on with my practise, I know there will be another good event comming along any day now and I want to be ready!!

THANKS AGAIN,
FINGERS

But along with that, goes the nature of the pool player.

If a bunch of quality guys said they were showing up, who knows how many bailed cause they figured that since everyone was going to this thing, they would go to a local or regional event that had a softer field and try to steal.

I mean, to me, pool is about making money as it is to a lot of serious pool players i know. If i was a world beater, and i knew every heavy duty player was gonna be occupied, i would LOVE to go to a regional tournament to steal.

THAT way, i could take my cash prize, go do some nice things for myself and the girl, and still have some cash for the NEXT qualifier that might come up where it would be a freeroll. Not that there are going to be a ton of qualifiers, but i would assume that Jose isn't the only one having them.
Who knows how many of the players that said they would be there and asked who else signed up, were surprised to see them at the OTHER tournament when they showed up to steal like everyone else.

Add to that, that i know lots of pool players that just are paranoid at the state of the game.
And while Allen puts on a good show and has produced some quality tournaments that have been around for the longest time, i know there are a few players that really do wonder if the biggie is really gonna happen, despite how consistent Hopkins has been over the years when it comes to producing events.
That's not saying anything bad about Allen Hopkins at all, but rather is indicative of how pool players who have to spend a lot of money think.
A lot of them are cheap!

it was obvious in speaking with Jose this afternoon of his disappointment about the weekend (and I do not know him personally) - he seemed to be really excited about the possibilities. let's hope that his room will be supported in the future by those passing through, etc. as he did make a genuine effort for the players. I can definitely understand your disappointment with the outcome as well and applaud you for stepping up to the plate to play regardless of the number of players in attendance.
