Ok I have been working on building my first case for some time now and I need some advice. I thought it would be cool to line the tubes with simonis cloth but the one thing I am not sure of is if it will offer as much protection as say a nice fuzzy felt. The inside of the leather is already done with simonis and I am getting closer to being finnished. It is a 3x5 and I did all the tooling and stiching by hand. I would greatly apreciate any imput. Thanks

What are you using for tubes. I used to build a few cases but i"m taking some time off. I used inexspesive felt to line mine with.

Simonis is a high grade worsted wool. My basic rule of thumb concerning liners is this; If you wouldn't use the fabric as a polishing cloth on your expensive custom cue then don't line your case with it.

In my opinion worsted wool is too abrasive for the finish. However I have seen plenty of cases lined with pool cloth and they seemed fine.

I personally would choose a softer material.

good rule.

picture it - would you feel comfortable rubbing your shaft firmly on the bed of the table (freshly clothed even). i imagine like john said it's probably a bit too abrasive.

I am using a thin walled plastic pipe that I believe was used for indoor conduit but I'm not sure. I found the stuff at a farm auction and bought all they had. im using 1 1/2 in I.D. for the butts and 1 inch for the shafts. Also if anyone knows something better to use for tubes and where I can get it it would be helpful, I only have enough left to do one more 1x2 for a friend of mine. Thanks:thumbup:

Is the plastic youre trying used for electrical wiring and such? Look for the thicker wall PVC pipes used for plumbing. They come in different widths and are sold at any place like Lowes and Home Depot.

i thought of trying that but kind steered away becouse I thought it would be too heavy. I hate heavy cases and I am trying to keep it as light as possible. The stuff I am using is almost as stiff as PVC but I think it is alot lighter. Also once I have the leather around it is seems to be just as rigid as any other case I have seen. I dont know but this case seems to be just as rigid as any other case I have seen. I thank everone for their imput and any other ideas are welcome. Thank you

Yeah, the Simonis would look really cool inside the case but I don't think I'd want my cues rubbing up against that kind of cloth all the time. Maybe you can go to a fabric shop and find something a little less abrasive in the same color.
MULLY
the lid liner could be Simonis

yes mully I have done the lid and the inside of the leather in simonis tourament blue. you can see the cloth around the top on the inside. I used an instroke as kind of a guidline. the tubes are recessed into the case about 1 1/2in and I used a flat piece of plastic on the bottom for a base. the main difference between this case and an instroke is the lack of rivets. I hand stiched all the seams with black tread and did all the tooing myself by hand. I easily have over 200 hours in this case. As soon as I can get somone out here with a camera(or as soon as I can quit buying cues and save some money to get one of my own lol) I will post pics of this case. Remember this is my first one and I kinda went for the well worn, soft and supple leather rather than stiff new stuff. I hope it meets up with everyones expectations.
