Well if you want something that won't warp, try a fiberglass shaft. Of course it will hit like @@@@. If that is not your cup of tea, then try a low deflection shaft. OB-1 or OB-2 would be a good start. These shafts are made here in the USA and the manufacture really stands behind their products. You could get into one of these type shafts for under $200.00. Other than that maple is your best bet.

If you want a stiff hitting shaft, a couple other options you might want to try are Purpleheart or Ash.
Regardless of the wood you chose, the taper of the shaft will have as much (or more) affect on how "stiff" it plays as the wood used to make it.

My counsel is old growth maple or Hard rock Maple shaft with 20+ rings per inch with 3/4 phenolic ferrule and phenolic collar.

It was stiff as hell, but realy responsive.
I asked him why cue makers didn't use it? he said it would be very hard to find a suitable piece and way more expensive than maple or ash.
Anyway I thought it was just amazing.

Birdseye maple, especially loaded with big eyes would be horrible choice for a shaft, if you have any pool playing skills at all. If you're into novelty and being different for the fun of it, it might be real cool.
