SOMETHING IMPORTANT: Smorgass Bored

The title of this thread could have easily been "Something I have wanted to say for a long time."

Smorgass Bored has been the most liked poster on this forum for many years and with good reason.

Doug Wiley has brought tears of laughter to this forum on more occasions than I could count. His wit and investment of his time have been priceless to many of us. He really has no equal. No one person has ever impacted this forum the way that Tampa-Tubby has.

Tampa-Tubby Bob is a unique man and a friend to many.

Some of you know that Doug and I haven't always been friends. We've never been enemies and really didn't know each other until probably ten years ago or so. I don't wish to go back and clarify just how long we have been friends but wanted you to know a little history about he and I.

On the old newsgroup forum called rec.sport.billiard, he and I am many of you traded words of familiarity and angst on what is often called RSB. It was a fun place for many years and while there's no reason to discuss why we're not still there, many of us have simply moved on to this forum. In ten more years it might be something else or somewhere else; no one knows what the future will hold.

On RSB, Doug would often talk about New Orleans and refer to people that I see on a regular basis but I had never heard of any Doug, especially not the one that had been described to me on RSB. One day after many condoned posts I finally challenged him to explain to me how it was that he lived here in New Orleans and that he and I had never crossed paths. I had finally got enough of his bally-hooing about him and New Orleans and wanted the truth. It was really quite simple Doug explained, "I played in the bars and you played in the pool rooms and that is why we never crossed paths". I never told him that I occasionally would make forage in the bar rooms on an occasion or two but I guess he knew that. Doug knew a lot of things.

Doug knew how to make friends. He knew the secret and he shared it with me without telling me what the secret was. Really, all you have to do is read a little and if your want friends, you have to be a friend. That's all there is to it. Doug, in spite of our different lives, we had shared similar interests and affiliations. Doug is a former marine much like myself and loved gambling and playing pool. He had other interests like antiques, fishing and being the greatest stay-at-home husband. Doug shared a lot of love with his wife Barbara who is also a former New Orleanian.

Tampa-Tubby would save up his dough and make a trip to New Orleans every now and then. Me being the suspicious guy that I am, always waited for the other shoe to drop. I just knew the guy was up to something no good and it involved me; I just knew it. Each and every time I met Doug, he came all the way to wherever I happened to be to spend time with me and the rest of our kind, to laugh, to joke, to gamble and yes, to play a little pool.

Doug was a guy who didn't hesitate to bet his money where he felt he had an even chance to win and it didn't have to be on himself either. If he lost, you never heard him whine about the loss. He might tease his horse but it was always in good spirits. I waited and waited for this very interesting and friendly fellow to let me know what his true intentions were. Finally it dawned on me that he had no intentions except to be my friend. There were people whom he had flame fests with whom Doug had rankled. Yes, even my good friend Doug could raise the ire of some individuals. On occasion, I was asked by his detractors where he lived, what his real name was, what his telephone number was and so forth. They even asked how I could protect such a guy as he. Those words were weightless words and fell on my deaf ears. No man is ever going to travel this earth without annoying at least a few people from time to time.
Most of the time when he or I would have a little pizzing contest with another member of the forum, we would simply stand on the sidelines and let each of us make it on our own. We didn't need each other's morale support in such an overt way. We knew we had each other's respect and friendship and allowing each of us to fight our own battles was just our way. The people that we PO'ed either got over it or they didn't and we didn't really try that hard to make up either. If it happened, it was good if it didn't, it was still OK. Smorgass Bored and I didn't march to the same drummer but we liked similar rhythmic tunes and respected each of our individualistic lives. Doug enjoys his the role of anonymity that he often portrayed here on AZ Billiards and RSB but for sure, it was just a ruse, a play for Doug never feared any man or anything that I know of. He enjoyed the notoriety that some offered him because of his anonymity and he laughed at them because of their angst and I can tell you for a fact that no person had to like getting into a brawl with Doug. Lately, he hasn't been doing very well. In fact, you could say that he is doing about as poorly as a man can be doing and I don't know how much longer he will be around. I like many of you wish he would last forever. I wish he would come on this forum and pour out his heart in song and verse but he is no longer able to do that.

I could tell you many times when Doug showed me what a friend was and he always amazed me because I never knew what I did to deserve such friendship. Once when Doug was watching my back, as he was apt to do at any pool tournament he and I happened to be at, I was utterly astounded to hear him admonish one of the most respected pool players that has ever lived. I was playing a match and Buddy Hall had just finished his match (which he had come from behind to win) and Buddy was being extremely loud and exuberant for a long period of time as he stood close to my table as I struggled with every shot grimmacing and cursing Buddy's distraction under my breath. At the time I didn't really know Buddy that well but Doug stood up and questioned Buddy who lived in the same town as Doug and was a friend of Buddy's. Doug asked Buddy if he had completed his match to which Buddy replied with a smile big as a quarter moon, "Yes, I did but I had to come from behind to win". Doug replied, "Well Joey is still playing his match". Buddy fell silent for a moment as he was embarassed by this admonishment. It wasn't easy to be admonished by Doug and on behalf of a banger like myself, I'm sure it wasn't an easy pill to swallow. Buddy being the real man that he is, formed the words and apologized saying, "I'm sorry! I'm just crazy" or something close to that and quickly scooted away. Buddy saw me the next day practicing early in the morning and schooled me on a few shots and that was the beginning of my friendship with Buddy Hall. It started with Doug admonishing one of the greatest players that ever played, on my behalf. There are many other stories, far too many to share in this forum or any other. Conversations by PM, email and telephone that went on for limitless amounts of time.

Many of you have written to me to send your wishes to Doug and I have done as you have asked.

I fear the end is quickly approaching and I wanted to share some of my story with you and Doug while there is still time.

The old saying, "Time waits for no man" could not be more seasonable.

If you are inclined to tell Doug something, you are invited to say it here and now.

Doug and I wish you all of the best that life has to offer.

Doug, you've been a good friend and I value your friendship far more than I could ever tell you. Just rest assured that you are my friend.

I consider Doug a friend

I consider Doug a friend. I know many people, I have few friends so that pretty much says it all to those that understand what being a friend really means.

Doug, akaSmorgass Bored, is the main reason why AZB forums is like family for me. He has a talented way in making everyone laugh and smile, just by a few flicks of words. He is an amazing man and has touched many.

He is my hero and I love him.

His wife Barbara is a wonderful woman; Doug is an amazing man.

He prolly thinks I am just a stalker-type fan but I am more than a fan, I am a true follower, friend, student, and fellow Azer who would do anything for him. In a heartbeat.

He means more to me than I could ever put down in writing.

On RSB way back when I was a newbie I couldn't wait to READ Doug's posts - they always got a laugh out of me.

We had one flame session over Arnot Cues and Doug was the clear winner with such barbs as telling me IF Arnot cues I had control over were damaged then they were so because I put them on a drawer, sprayed water on them, and sat on them to bend them. :-)

Doug is truly one of the funniest people on the internet and he has a heart of gold and a mind as sharp as a pin and a wit to match it.

I haven't been a friend to him like you Joey, but I have respected him and enjoyed his humor and wit for a long time.

We didn't have rep points on RSB - no features - no PMs - (well we did and they were called emails) - and really no games - it was all out there and content was king and Smorg provided the kind of humor that I and I am sure many of us looked forward to each day.

If I wasn't surrounded by family at the moment, I would be bawling my eyes out. Thank goodness for them, and thank goodness for countless laughs and thoughtful moments Doug has given us over the years. I was around in those RSB days, and remember some of the skirmishes. Thanks for the memories, Joey, and for reminding us all what friendship really means.

Bless you, Doug. Wherever and whatever heaven may be, no one deserves a place there more than you.

When I first joined AZ last March I was fascinated by all the different avatars everyone had but when I came across that cat in the green helmet and the post that went along with it I laughed so hard I was practically crying - thereafter I always looked forward to your posts - it was like you were putting a little "smile" in everyone's day -

So now it's our turn Doug to try and put a little "smile" in your day and that is what I hope all these posts will do for you - I never had the fun of meeting you as many here have but through your posts and all the stories being shared here now I feel I have -

Thanks Doug - Jackson

My Friend Doug

For You Doug

Doug,

I first heard about you when a friend of mine, Lewis Jones, starting talking about, "that guy "Smorgass Bored" from the forum is a NUT"!!

I had mostly hung out in the Tournament Section and some in the main, but had to go and find out who this Smorgass Bored was that Ironman kept talking about.

I gotta tell you, I laughed out loud for days!!! So much deep humor.Plays on current events and references to 2,3 or even more other threads in a joke! Only a seasoned AZer could possibly understand. People would be fuming at each other and you would post a simple post and suddenly things were all better.

That's when I really began to get more involved in other forums on AZ. I wanted to be part of what you were doing. Doug, you always made AZ fun. You will ALWAYS be in my heart and thoughts.

Thanks for everything!!

Your Friend Always!

Thanks for writing that Joey. Doug has a good friend.

Doug, I don't know you, and we probably have little in common, but you have been a real gem to this board and I have found your humor and wit unmatched!

My best wishes that you surround yourself with friends and family and find comfort and ease in their presence.

I've never met you in person

He is to AZ what Paul Harvey was to us all.

But you have given us all laughter on this forum. And to me, that is a great gift. To be able to make people even crack a smile, is something special. Just by what Joey has written here, tells a lot about what kind of person you are in real life. A great man, and a Great friend. Although there were times that some on the forum did not agree with you, I'm sure there were times you made them smile too. Your presence here will be greatly missed, and always remembered.

I met Smorg back on RSB.

Now before you all go and hold your collective noses and start with the "alligator pit" comments, you should know that at one time, RSB was far better than what you have here.

And it was so because *everyone* got a seat at the table. Didn't matter if it was Drivermaker ranting; Deno telling us how all pool players were scum; JB telling us you could drive over one of his cases in a tank; Jimbo needling *everybody*, but still organizing a group get together that was The Bomb; PJ, Ron Shepard, Mike Page, and Bob Jewett schooling all of us on things we all accept as common knowledge now; and a huge host of others kvetching at each other no-holds, barred. We applauded each other in victory or defeat, whether it was Joey beating Shannon Daulton in a big tournament, or me playing Efren Reyes in the US Open. Even JAM stopped by, early on in her internet career, and tried to set the whole place on fire over an innocent comment about a little lady in purple ;-) Your ideas succeeded or failed on their merits and there were no rep points. Kicks to the head and sensitive organs were allowed and encouraged. We invented popcorn :-)

That's also where I met Smorg and came to appreciate him as the guy who always kept the party going; always had the quickest wit, comeback, story, barb, compliment, and from whom I learned *the art* of the post script and intentional Freudian slip.

Smorg was *The Party* there, as he is here.

I only met Smorg once in person, on his stomping grounds, down in Florida. He was the consummate host and a true pleasure to be around. We played 1pocket for a few hours and I was lucky to escape with my pride intact ;-)

Smorg, if you have any gas left in that old tank of yours, I beg you to come through for all of us in the on-line pool community.

Just think of the hospital war stories you could tell :-)

Love you, Smorg.

Lou Figueroa

I've tried many times now to put in words what I feel, after reading this thread and Doug's last post in that other thread.

I wish that I would get a chance to meet Doug, but I guess that will never happen. It really makes me sad, because I know I would love to be around him.

If you read this Doug, I want you to know that you mean a lot to all of us, and that you will always be in our hearts. Few people have achieved touching so many, and made so many people laugh. That's a special gift and talent that you have taken good care of!

Here's my favourite version of the song "I shall be released".

For you Doug, good luck on your journey:

I do not know Smorgass and never had the pleasure, but from what everyone is saying, I say he must be a very good person and he must be a true friend. It is hard to find real and true friendship that is filled with love, sacrafice and loyalty. There are many in our world that would never know what a real friend is and there are very few who have true friends. From what I see, Smorgass beg to differ, because he has many real friends and is a real friend to many.

Doug may be the funniest, wittiest man alive. He could have made millions in some form of entertainment. Instead, he entertained us with no compensation but the pool world's adoration.

He asked me to leave him alone. So I have 100%, until now.

I hope he is comfortable, I truely care about him, he is #1(I was for a week) he will awalys be #1, I hope he is at peace with everything and gets his health back.

A Word From Smorg

This was posted on the Update thread by Doug earlier tonight.:(

I'm thinking that some of you didn't see it.

Thanks to everyone for letting Doug know what he means to you.

Ray

Joey,
You and so many others here have been such good support and friends over the years and I treasure each and every one of you.

The results of the test were not encouraging and the course that the VA has planned is unacceptable.I have no life, no joys, no comfort and no sense of humor.

I have reached a decision. I'm tired and worn out and no longer have the strength, energy or willpower to continue the battle.

I pray that my online friends can forgive me and have enjoyed the ride. half as much as I have.

I love you all,
Doug

*Please try to help my wife Babarba through these difficult times. I have taught her how to log on under my account.
