Any Tornaments in the Boston area?

Curly (Silver Cue Woburn) is doing weekly ones on Tuesday nights.

Haven't been, so I can't say anything about it, oh, and on Thursday, i think Country Club has one as well (Chelmsford).

Hope that helps...

Pete

I am in Framingham currently but used to live in Boston.

The Snookers tourny is probably the best for size and field. They draw anywhere from 20 to 30 some odd players. Its twenty bucks and they also have a break and run contest.

I work in Westboro, and I can't find any place to test cues(looking for a new cue) anything near you on route 9?

No place around here or on RT9 to play or test a cue. Only place around here with a 9ft table is Fireflys in Marlborough

The Billiards Cafe in Ayer every Tuesday night. Usually 30 to 35 people. Alternate between 8 and 9 ball. APA rules. Tonight is 8 Ball. $6 a head with $1 going to the house and $5 to payout. Payout to top 3 places. Double elimination. Race to 3 winners, Race to 2 losers.

Never been to any tournaments at Silver Cue but I have been there. No bar. Limited selection of drinks consisting of 2 soda machines and some assorted energy drinks and Red Bull. Upstairs and kind of seedy just like a good pool hall should be.

World Class Billiards on old RTE ONE, in Peabody MA. has a monthly handicap tournament. Your either a five or a four handicap. Ladies at the discretion of the tournament director, are allowed to play with a three handicap. The next event is April 18. We will be starting play at 11 am. The last event had thirty-five players. We were starting at 11:30 but we're pushing back the start time due to the influx of players. Entry fee is twenty-two dollars. If you get knocked out early the entry fee covers your play until 8 pm.

Hope to see you there.

How's it going.

Chelmsford on Thursday is good if you like to play alot. They are only drawing 12 to 16 right now, but it's $20 double elimination. Same format as what Tom posted earlier. A's go to 5 and B's and below go to 4. It's a house rating. You will go in as a 4 and when you get first or second you go to a 5. It's a nice mix of skill level. Lots of table to practice on all night. Snookers in RI is a great Tournament but they are drawing so many (about 40 per week) that there are no tables to practice on. You just play your matches pretty much. Also a great mix of skill levels. Probably more action there if thats what you want, but you can get some small sets at chelmsford. I'll give you a few if you like.

Hope you make it to chelmsford.

Tournaments in Boston area

The scarcity of pool halls in and around Boston is a bit surprising, but you can find leagues and tournaments if you keep your eyes peeled, especially if you're willing to drive into NH now and then.

Check out the New England 9-Ball Series near the bottom of this page.

Legends in Portsmouth used to have 9-ball tournaments, but I never attended one and I'm not sure if they're still open or if they still have tournaments. Here's an old link:

Country Club in Chelmsford has a 9-ball tournament every Thursday, according to their calendar. The last time I was there they had tourneys on Mondays, but I haven't been there in a while. You shouldn't have too much difficulty finding strong players there.

Sunday night tournaments at McCue's in Keene, NH:

If you're into 3-cushion then you have another reason to check out World Class in Peabody. The 3-cushion tournaments may still be held weekly. John, one of the owners, is also great about giving pointers.

If you play 3-cushion, then you should also consider heading up to Mazin Shooni's new place in Hooksett near Manchester, NH. Mazin's a good guy and a fantastic 3-cushion player, and if you get on his mailing list you'll get updates about the tournaments there.

There are several sites with listings for pool halls in and around Massachusetts, thought the sites may not be updated. ALWAYS call ahead; several pool halls in the Boston area have closed in the past few years.

I've been happy buying pool supplies from Ac-Cue-Rate Billiards in Pelham, NH.

I really can't agree with this. I don't know how you define scarcity but I can list a bunch more places in and around Boston.

Jillians with 42 tables. Right in town in the shadow of Fenway Park.

The Wave (Corner Pocket Billiards) in Waltham. 31 tables with APA leagues a few nights a week.

Maxamillians Billiards in Tynsboro. 16 tables and leagues 2 nights a week.

Boston Billiards in Worcester and Nashua, NH

For Bar boxes check out Mickey's Sports Pub in Billerica. 3 coin Ops, live music on Fridays and Saturdays, good drinks cheap. Within the last couple of months they had all the tables recovered and serviced.

You also have Lanes and Games in Cambridge. I have never been there but my son says besides bowling they have a bunch of tables.

That is only a partial list.

As far as spending more money. Check out The Complete Gamester in Waltham. They carry an acceptable line of cues and accessories and the basement is a show room for new Olhausen tables and used tables.

And if you want to take some lessons Bob LeBlanc is a good place to start.

You have a point, PegLeg, and I'm familiar with these and other pool halls. Perhaps I'm dwelling too much on the closing of Good Time Emporium and Boston Billiards.

As it happens I play in the Max's league, though I'd like to find a league closer to home.

I don't play in a league but you can find me at Max's just about every Friday night. I usually go out to The Billiard's Cafe in Ayer every Tuesday and play in their tournament.

I work right down the street from the Wave but I prefer not to go there. The music isn't my style and I really have a problem with the way they run the business sometimes. I leave a CC when I get the table and then the waitress tells me she needs another CC so I can run a tab on my drinks. She tells me to many college students have screwed them on drink tabs and as a former bartender I understand that but they already have my CC for the table. Why do they need another?
