Edwin "Bandido" Reyes Lives On

Edwin passed away when I was on my way to the hospital just a few minutes after he was shot twice (.45 cal) by a DHL impostor. He did not get to complete the "s" in his signature when he was shot. On his lap was his baby girl. Inside the package was a broken cheap pool cue. When I was told that he passed away, I just had to stop by somewhere and collect myself. Edwin was a dear friend.

Edwin had his eccentricities. Like any artist, he had his flaws. Many times he was just a bit too domineering but it was only because of his passion. This kind of passion was the one that had brought him to be one of the best cue makers in the world. But isolating Edwin from his "position" here at home and internationally, Edwin had a good heart and he had integrity. He fought for fairness and not for greed. Edwin had integrity and he had no enemies outside of pool.

My first thought in the car was of Edwin's family. His eldest, Didoy, is 8 and his youngest has probably forgotten the face of the assassin by now. There are two in between. Nilda is lost in her shock. It has been a year when I arranged for the funeral of Edwin's dad. Today I arranged his.

Edwin had just come from Davao to relocate his family back to Manila. He was bent to re-focus and concentrate on his cue artistry. He was to fully join forces with Linds in cue production. After the new BSCP meeting yesterday, Edwin and I had a very long conversation. He concluded that he had done enough for Philippine pool and it was time to fend for himself. It is a fact that Edwin did not earn any money in any of his roles with BMPAP. He threw in his full time and attention to it.

Over Holy Week, he chose to drive his family from Davao to Manila, taking his time to enjoy all the stop-overs and scenery. It was his one full week of savoring his family. He chose an apartment in Project 4 because of its proximity to a school for his gifted Didoy. He moved in two days ago.

Edwin was a wise and intelligent man. Many times we would concede to each other's reflections. Today, it was just too late for me to make him concede to his error of accepting a package from DHL when nobody knew his address yet. It was a simple slip, my friend, but if you think about it, when someone wants to have you killed in Manila, many times, no amount of alertness can protect you. Error excused. Edwin was monitored sophisticated. He himself told me that his cell phone was bugged because it was acting strangely. I was warning Edwin to take the text message threats to him more seriously but he just laughed at them. He said it would be too easy to kill him because he was too much of a sucker to playing pool and he was not about to cut down on his playing. It was Edwin's time and he had to go. Shooting Edwin in the heart was very appropriately done because it was his heart that led him through life.

To the one who had Edwin killed, I know that you are reading this. The DHL delivery of a rotten cue stick was not a message to Edwin because he never got to see it. You have made your point to the group. I am grieving for the loss of a good friend, and the country had just lost a billiard hero who fought for a cause. Just please let it end with Edwin's demise.

Edwin, tol, I will always remember you as what you truly are. Our 2002 pact still stays - "if it is good for the players, then it is good for pool."

My God, who could do such a thing!

This is tragic. I cannot imagine what Edwin's family is going through right now. How horrible.

Thanks for letting us know what happened, Sputnik. Pool has lost a very great man. :(

He'll get his.
The scumbag who had Edwin killed in front of his family, will get what's coming to him.

Here is a picture of Edwin Reyes running a pool tournament which was attended by all the Filipino champions, as well as government officials, called the Senate President Manny Villar Cup Tournament. He gave so much of his heart to pool.

To read how he was on a trip with his family, deciding to spend more time with them, is so heartbreaking that he did not get a chance to fulfill that goal.

Picture taken from AnitoKid's website of Edwin keeping the charts running smoothly.

What a loss this is, so senseless. For what? I just don't understand it.

It is now dawning on me that...

I am so ANGRY at the people who ordered his silence.

MGA DUWAG KAYO. (U've got no balls to face him personally.)

Because he had a different opinion about the direction of Filipino pool, he is assassinated. Who would do such a thing!?

I hope this murder is investigated to the fullest extent.

Who is Mga Duwag Kayo?

Here's another pic I found of Edwin Reyes working on his custom cues.

Thank you for translating! :)

Here is a brief snippet taken from Edwin Reyes' website. For those of you readers who were not fortunate enough to know AzBilliards "Bandito" (Edwin's forum name), this will give you a brief bio about his intro into the pool world.

Edwin Reyes learned by himself how to make cues in the USA. He could not satisfy with the American cue in terms of playability when he was living in California, and he decided to make cues by himself. He was involved in taking X-ray photos at the hospital as his profession, and he had chances to make X-ray photos of many cues made by various American cue makers which helped him design mechanical construction of his own cue intended to be superior than other cue makers'.

Having majored Engineering and Art at the University in Manila, additionally, having taken part time jobs at the machine shop that his uncle owns, he had no problem in designing and machining of his cues when he first started making cues in California, USA.

Later, being the first son of his family, he was forced to return to Philippines, mainly because his father got sick in hospital and needed him to be close by. Meanwhile, he met Charles Takahashi of Alpha International, Tokyo who offered him business conditions for an exclusive purchase of his cues, thereby, being able for him to concentrate upon cue making.

Edwin Reyes is very creative. He is always enthusiastic in improvements on his cue making. His cues are not only unique in design, but also incorporate his exclusive ideas, such as "flat joint with exclusive radial joint screw", "all screw joints" at all jointing sections, "double screws" with zero hollow air gap between forearm and grip, "carbon fiber bar inserted shaft" for maximum power and playability, "ER240, 240 piece laminated maple hi-tech shaft", etc.

My own pool world somehow seemed to not be so bright for me in recent years. This news about Edwin Reyes, the way he was murdered for standing up for what he believed in for the betterment of pool, really sickens me.

If I remember it right, this was the last EPT Tourstop he attended in Jan '09 at Playdium.

That's a GREAT picture. WOW! You can just see the enthusiasm on all the faces, especially Edwin's. Thanks for sharing that picture.

To the man who stood up for righteousness, rest in peace.

Condolences to Edwin’s family and many friends in the pool world and beyond. Johnnyt

So very sorry for the loss of your friend.
May justice be served to the COWARD that hides behind a gun.
Was he related to Efren?

I just feel sad, very sad. Edwin stood up for what he believed in. HE was a man of courage!

To think that someone could be assassinated just for having a 'different view' about how pool should be "organized", is both shocking and despicable. Apparently there must be some sort of pool "mafia" in the PI. This is strange and extremely sad. My thoughts and condolences to his friends and family.

Politics

It is obvious to me that someone has ordered the hit. Somehow or somewhat the person(s) responsible for this is probably reading this forum.
Getting him killed in front of his family is inhuman. You're a sick motherf***

I have one thing to say, WHAT COMES AROUND, GOES AROUND. I have always believe in karma.

May You Rest in Peace Edwin!
Your hard work and contribution to the pool world is not forgotten.
