Edwin Reyes : Unfinished Masterpiece

i had gone to meet edwin in Manila in March 2008 and we started on a project together... here is an excerpt of one of our emails:

========

i'm sure that you've seen the amboyna slabs in the Bandido's Cues thread. I went up to the mountains back in 2004 to personally pick those amboynas. I do have all the colors that the amboyna naturally comes in and the best and rarest ones are the reds with orange swirls which at times do exhibit some golden eyes.

The samurai warrior, that rode on the dragon, is fighting a monster that was terrorizing a village. That solid piece is 31mm in diameter with a 19mm threaded hole. It has been as you see it since 2002 so it should be aged and stabilized by now since I keep it in my temperature and humidity controlled room.

Yes it does have a matching carved ivory joint that has a Japanesewarrior face and a koi. I plan to make some joint rings with shuriken shaped ivory inlays and the number of points depend on the number of inlays ie. 4points for 8 shuriken ring inlays or 6 for 12.

I also plan to build it with 4 shafts.

"8 horses", as seen on page 1 of "Bandidos Cues" was bought for X,000.- by my Japanese dealer and was sold for an undisclosed amount to a Japanese collector. With the scrim detail and more complicated carve and scrim work on "Kintaro", I'm asking US$XX,XXX.- for this.

the solid piece he is referring to was first featured in :

unfortunately, he did not get to finish the cue.

thanks to the efforts of Jhun ( blowfish ), i now have the unfinished cue in hand.

i am not quite sure what to do with it. but for now, here is what would have undoubtedly been one of his greatest cues....

Mr Edwin Reyes' Kintaro Cue.

Thank you for posting that pic and story Kam.
I think leaving them as they are now would be the thing to do.

Kam, I see this cue and I immediately think of the lightning rolling across the Hong Kong sky, the cue moving balls with the force of a typhoon. The words he used, conveying the love he had for his creation, bared his soul. Were you able to obtain the Amboyna he described so vividly?

Kam,

If you should have it finished, I think Joey is the man.
That is if he wants to do it. What do you think, Joey?

Hi, Kam
Thanks for this post and thanks for refreshing my memories of my visit to Master Reyes' place in November 2007, 1 day after the WPC 2007 final.

I was lucky on my visit as Master Reyes seemed to be in a good mood and he brought me to see his wood inventory. some of the woods were still in raw form and I did manage to see the amboyna as well.
The wood looked very nice and according to Master Reyes, the amboyna wood can be used uncored for cues.

I also managed to get to see this piece of carving and I thought to myself that Master Reyes was indeed a genius in cuemaking.
He managed to bring life to the dragon and the samurai in such limited space.
This piece of carving was one of my main memories during my visit to Master Reyes' shop.
Words cannot simply explain how beautiful this piece of carving is.

Kam, Thank you once again.

I missed this somehow but I agree that I would have it finished and actually play with it atleast once. I dont know anyone involved but I bet Edwin would have wanted it in one piece and ready to go than unfinished and never seen again. Imagine finishing this cue then getting a magazine to do a tribute to him or something of that nature.

I think it would be nice to finish it so you can play with it,or sell it to someone who would enjoy it as well

Gus Szamboti left some unfinished cues, and Barry finished them and sold them as GSB,Gus Szamboti Barry. These are real treasures, perhaps you would enjoy doing the same

I doubt he'd sell it at this point I dont think. I think it seems to have a TON sentimental value on this cue and the cue owner.

you are correct... selling it is not something i am even considering...

getting it finished is tough as getting that ivory block in and then out of the states will be stressful to say the least.

have spoken to someone about it .. he said to leave it for now and to re-visit the situation in a few months ...

so for now, it is the shafts and forearm are in a case and the ivory butt is in my safe.

i doint think he ment to finish and sell. he means just finish it up. the only resaon barry prob sold the cues he finished is bc they were ordered and possibly paid for. so there was a order that had to be filled.

I forgot you were in Hong Kong so getting it finished is probably not an option at this point. I would still look around though, maybe we could get some help from someone that would go over there and try to finish it for you just to help or something. I'm sure we could eventually figure it out.

I understand you on the sentimental value. I could tell by the way you typed that it meant alot to you. Its like my worthless Meucci 2 pointer my Dad bought me for my birthday over 10 1/2 years ago. He got screwed by his friend on the deal, but I was happy so it was worth it to him. I'd never sell it, even if I was offered 4 figures to sell it even though its only worth 300 in mint.

Reyes unfinished cue

This recent response caused me to look back at some of the cues Edwin posted. Very nice work indeed.

Can you post a photo or two of the butt sleeve?

I love the carvings like this.

I noticed out of the four (4) shafts, two (2) look a little darker darker than the other two (2). Why is this - for folks like me who do not know?
