Hello all! Just moved to the West Coast from the East and in my search for a new APA team to join (unsucessful as of yet- any Seattle-ites looking for a strong 3? Been shooting for only a year) and stumbled upon this site.

So hey- currently working on Byrne's shot book. And this is my cue... I do not know what it is, but the points are real and seem to be a crisp imitation of the Balabushka color scheme. I also believe the round dots are ivory, but am not sure. Wrap is a unique leather that I have not seen before.

This site is pretty informative... I spent quite awhile browsing it while waiting for my membership to go through. Look forward to using you all for your breadth of knowledge (hehe) and getting to the point where I can contribute too.

As you can tell.. the cue is a little old and the bottom screw does not seem to be original as it just doesn't quite fit tightly into the butt. Not knowing exactly what the cue is, thought, I have been wary of doing anything to it but shooting with it. Bumper still serves its purpose.

Cue Identification

So now I have found a kind team to accept me... we shoot on Thursdays... but now, with hours of practice, I find that a few on the rings on the aforementioned cue are loose. I would REALLY like to know what this cue is and if is ok to simply glue the rings solid. I LOVE the feel of this cue (it has a narrow tip; good for my game) but don't want to do anything drastic until I know what I am working on. Up until this point, I preferred no knowing the maker and such in case it was actually worth something; My sweetie and I have been in some hard financial times (we are both employed in the Theatrical Industry) in the past and I could always imagine having to pawn this if the situation arose... someone tell me it is a crappy vintage cue and I will glue away. Thanks all; and if anyone here shoots at Malarkey's in Tacoma, WA, let me know and I will say 'hey' when I am around there.

that is an interesting cue. good pics too. you are already a step above most. take some pics of inside the joint butt and shaft insert. also unscrew the bumper and take a pic of the weightbolt and if you can unscrew the weightboth take a pic of it out also. it looks well made but the joint is throwing me for a loop. also the bumper. it has import qualities but then again it doesnt...

maybe rich viking or adams. 99% sure its not a palmer paradise bushka boti ect. its fullsplice so the blank prob adam... who finished tho?

another pic...

Thanks for your input Mr. Sutton... I think you may have answered the questions for me. There is, in fact, NO weight bolt and the end cap is plactic and everything appears to be individual rings around plain wood. Here are a few pics...

rings are usually done that way sleeved over the handle. anything that old the glue could have failed. the fact there is no weightbolt also means nothing. some makers today still use a screw into wood to hold a bumper. ala tad wgo also puts a serial number stamped uner the bumper. still a mystery cue but i do one think you have anything super special there. the joint to me is the give away. could be wrong tho so lets hear some other opinions...

Going on EBAY...

This is a little embarassing, but after kind Mr. Sutton's remarks, I looked up metal on metal joints on this site and was kind of sad that I had not researched this before. I pulled out my modern Dufferin and played with it tonight, and though I HATE the large/wide tip, the feel was totally different. I did not even realize that NO quality cuemakers use metal on metal anymore. Now it is in my head. I will be listing this on EBAY tomorrow and hope to get a cue that I can actually play with from that money. The sad thing about this cue is that I KNOW these are real ivory inlay dots (not sure about the MOP) and real points (I am a carpenter by trade) but it just cannot be played with, and I cannot affor to have a relic collector's cue.
BEFORE I do that, however, I will be calling the original owner. The cue came with a (pleather? vinyl?) soft case that had a VERY faded paper name plate that I was finally able to make out (only one person in the country with the name; within 5 mile of the Goodwill I found it at) to make sure it is not stolen.

Thanks for your responses Dave... because of you I will be frequenting this forum for a long time.

Or....

I like this enough that I was also wondering if it is even POSSIBLE to have a new NON-METAL joint shaft made to match this cue and how much this might run. I saw online that replacement shaft are often made, so I was wondering what this typically runs and who you might recommend to do it.

Here is a Frank Paridise cue that is similar in design so at least you can figure the era it was made.

glad you found a team, you wont be a 3 for long. tkae care of that cue you might just have something there. if it is something perhaps retireing it from league play is a good idea, welcome to AZ you'll learn alot about alot here. dont worry about being a 3 or a 50 AZ has people of all speeds here

What now....?

So... I am now on THREE teams (8ball, 9ball, and double Jeopardy) and I absoluteley-friggin LOVE this cue. I don't care who made it (well, it WOULD be nice to brag) or what it is worth, but I need to know who I should go to to make a matching shaft WITHOUT the metal joint. I am willing to pay a decent amount, but I am a relatively new player, and as such do not know what the procedure for this is. I appreciate ANY help...

Jim beat me to it...but you are one lucky sonofagun! As it so happens, one of the better cue restorers lives quite close to you.

Do yourself a favor, and conduct a search of the cue gallery for full splice billiards and you should get some hits showing you the type of work he does, and some of the cues he's brought back to life. He'll be straight with ya and may even have a pretty good clue who made the cue...the man is a wealth of information on some of these neat older cues.

Seriously...this cue is right up his alley. *DO NOT put this cue on eBay until you have spoken to Craig...that's all I'm saying...

I highly recommend Craig for the work!

thank you ALL...

That is great news... I will be contacting him on Fri when I have more 'fun' money available!

Thanks for the helpful responses- I will keep you all updated and will give pics of the final product if possible.

And thanks for the heads-up... this cue is not going on Ebay. I RARELY fall in love with objects (My car is crap, my watch is worn) but this cue is becoming special to me for many reasons. I think I will see what can be done to rejuvenate her.
