A few weeks ago I posted a few in progress pictures of a Cash Cue Ferruleless LD Shaft. Well I got the shaft last week but have been too damn busy working to post pictures and give a review of the playability of the shaft until now.

First I want to thank Tommy and the guys for making a great shaft and I want to apologize for being a bit tardy with the pictures and review.

From a build/execution perspective I could not be happier than I am with this shaft. I am having Randy Mobley make me a cue that will look similar to the old JW window cues, so I sent Tommy one of Dan Tull's old JW cues to match the ring work so I might be able use this shaft with the new cue. They truly nailed the ring work and the shaft is top notch wood.

From a playability perspective I love the hit of the shaft and had no problems getting used to the look of no ferrule. I used the shaft for about five hours and it did not require any special adjustments from the Predator shafts that I have been using for the last year. Just to do a little test I put the original ivory ferruled shaft on the Joss and using it required quite a bit of adjustment for swerve/deflection.

I highly recommend these shafts to anyone looking for a low deflection solid maple shaft.

Thanks again to Tommy and the guys at Cash Cues for a great shaft.

Here are some pictures of the shaft and the 1987 Joss West.

How do you have time to write this post on a weeknight?

Get back to work right now!

Will Prout.........<Heh, heh, heh........>

Will,

Thanks for making fun of the old working stiff:grin::grin: Let me know if you want to give this shaft a test drive on one of your many, many, many JW cues:eek::eek:

Don, thanks for the great review. I want to thank you for trusting me with that wonderful JW, and for giving me the opportunity to make one of our shafts for your cue. It was a pleasure getting to know you as well, I enjoyed our conversations during the time we took to make your shaft.

I have a question about these. I know Bob J has played with one for a long time, and Tony at Black Boar has cranked a few of these out for some players with good results.

I was wondering if there is anything "Special" about the way the tip is joined to the ferrule? I can't imagine there really being anything different about the design (just a normal shaft dowel with the tip glued on), but maybe I'm missing something.

I think the biggest thing is that players are now realizing how much the ferrule contributes to deflection. This seems like the best solution as opposed to finding a newer/softer/spongier ferrule.

Am I off on my thinking???

Some great questions, thanks for asking. The tip is glued on, just like a regular shaft with a ferrule, and we use a fiber backing pad too.

We experimented with several end configurations, but one showed a big difference, playing remarkably well.

I was willing to sink or swim with our shaft, putting it out there for unbiased reviews. I believed it had something extra to make a difference, and the reviews support my belief so far.

I'm sure Tommy doesn't want to put design drawings out in the open, but I'm pretty sure there's more involved to lighten the front end than leaving the ferrule off - though that is, no doubt, a contributor.
These shafts do play very well, and the lack of a ferrule also softens up the hit quite a bit - the effect could be personalized based on your preferred tip.

If I recall correctly Tommy once said there was a lot going on in the business end of his LD shafts. I think the same can be said for the one's that Tony at BB is making as well. I know that Dan has experimented quite a bit with older shafts and by drilling a very small hole down into an old Mali shaft and using some very light ferrule material that Andy Gilbert gave him he was able to create a maple shaft that played with very little deflection.

I am not sure what Tommy and the guys at Cash Cues did but whatever it was it works very well and I highly recommend these shafts to anyone wanting a non laminated LD shaft.

is there a website to look at these shafts? or to even order one?

Hey Frazz You can PM me about the shafts, and I will answer any questions and provide you with photos. We are a small custom shop in Jackson, Tn , no web site, just word of mouth. Thanks for your questions.

There have been a few threads on ferruleless shafts lately so I thought I would bump this one for people to see my review on the excellent shaft the guys at Ca$h cues made for me earlier this year.

Thanks again Tommy.
