Was out in search of some stuff today, and ended up at House of Cue/Shoot the Bull in PHX. Well I picked up a copy of Arizona Billiards News, and now need some help interpreting some of the terms used in the paper.

Paper says:

“ 8 and Under 9 Ball“

“Race to HDCP -3”

“8 & under * Ball 8’s to 4/7’s and below 3”

Lots and Lots of Pool Tournaments, and Stuff Happening, but some of the above Terms are making me scratch my head.

First time I saw in print, “ 8 and Under 9 Ball“.

My first thought was 9 Ball for Kids Eight Years Old and younger. LOL LOL :p

But I have figured out now the meaning is different, not to do with Kids, but I do not know what it still means .

Out here in Az. we have a state-wide rating system. You must be rated before you may play, or your going in at the highest rating.

Some people like it..some hate it.

A 10-2 being the top rating. (touring Pro)

4 is the lowest rating. Most avg. players fall into the 6-7 speed brackets.

Tournament formats vary greatly, depending on the establishment your at.

You carry your handicap with you, it's the same no matter where your playing.

Welcome to Arizona.

So how does one get a Rating

Talk with the tourny dir. Usually they will have you shoot a couple games, and judge your speed. Sometimes it's possible to be rated before the tourny. Best thing to do would be call wherever your thinking of playing ahead of time.

And you can be raised mid-tourny should something drastic happen during your match.

I have seen someone raised from a 6 to an 8 mid tourny. Due to his 'throwing off' during his rating. And there have been worse cases than that, believe me.

It means if you play too good, you can't play in the tournament. Wonderful handicap system they have here, huh? I always thought handicap systems were invented so that players of all skill levels could play together. Boy was I wrong. It turns out that they were invented to SEGREGATE players! Nice, eh?

Show up at a pool room and tell them you want to get rated. I hate to sound so bitter about the whole process, but I'm being honest when I say that someone who probably can't make a ball will watch you hit some balls then tell you what you're rated! Ahh, I love it. :)

I was raised mid tourny. It was 9's and under. I went in at a 7. The TD hardly watched me play to rate me. After a couple games I had to play as a 9. I was also called a "tanker". It was my first experience with the AZ rating system and the first time I was looked down upon for being a good shot...

Bruce, most everything is for 7's and under, btw. Being 8 and up is more of a punishment. All the weak players b!tch and complain...

I would be remiss without echoing Jimmy's opinion on this grand system which keeps these bars and rooms afloat..A totally inept and corrupt system that keeps the top players from participating, while encouraging sandbagging and a host of other low brow behaviors..

I think its why ...

That Donnie Brown (Wichita raised) moved to Okalhoma City
from Phoenix. He won some tournaments out there, and
then got stifled by the rating system.

Every once in a while someone will run a tournament and do a conversion of the rating system where (7-under goes to 2) / (8's and 9's go to 3) / (10's go to 4)... for whatever reason those tournaments draw more players than any of the regular (systems's) tournaments, and they are done by midnight.

I don't undersatand what is keeping them from converting the system to A/B/C for all weekly events.

I wasn't even looked at and wasn't even playing - some one (didn't even know the person) just rated me - read it in one of the pool papers - I think it was 10 + something. I hadn't played in Phoenix for years - not even knocking the balls around let alone any tournament action. The first league action in Metro Phoenix was started by a road player, Buddy Dennis. I played in a few - but Phoenix wasn't ready for leagues so it just seemed to die out. It was too bad since he devoted all his time to make it happen.

League play out here is pretty big now. There are BCA, ACS, APA, VNEA and TAP leagues that I know of. There are also some independent leagues going too.

Honestly I am nothing more than a "6" Player

This all sounds Complicated, Political, and too much trouble.

Think I will continue to play in the Jurassic Park with the Old Folks/FARTS, and let you Young Guys get frustrated with Tournaments, and Rating Systems.:) :p ;)

BTW than for the reply to me Question. Honestly I am nothing more than a "6" Player on a good day, and some day would dream of be a Magnificent SEVEN....
:) :D

Yeah, I remember this one time, some guy came through town and got rated a 6 or something like that ... I think he was under rated.
Rumor has it he was rated a 5. The guy must have been really talented, cause he went from a 5 to a 10 in about 3 months.

Yeah, I bought a cue from that guy and he was telling me that story. He was very talented, he almost beat me once. (LOL)

No it was worse than that....He went from a 5 to a 10 in one tournament....I remember the event.. After his first match he was told he was obviously under rated and was bumped for his next match to a 7...(he did not object)...After his next match he was told he was obviously not a 7 and was bumped to a 8...(he did not object)..After his next match he was told he was obviously not an 8 and was bumped to a 10...(he did not object) ...I can't remember if he won the tournament or was given his entry back and told to hit the road or what........but he was indeed a 10...he is a pretty well known shortstop (stakehorse and all).......I won't say what state...but I will say that I ran into him with some freinds at a open event........He is actually a really nice guy... He just happend to (hustle) the system....(which is pretty easy to do)

Even though (I feel) the other posters on this board are a little biased because or their rating, I must agree with them that the system although well intended is flawed...and a detrament to players improvement in AZ......JMO
