What's with desmoines that they practically have their own sticky. I mean , why do so many posters even care about a burg like desmoines?:boring:

It's a nice way for the locals to keep in touch when not at the pool hall...kinda blog-style, but on an open forum. Those that are interested open it & read, those that are not skip right over the top.

a burg like Des Moines? Sounds like a little jealousy here. Its ok, fall in line little buddy.

Mosconiac hit the nail on the head.

It would be really nice if other areas kind of did what we do. I highly recommend starting a thread for your local guys. I'd say it covers about 60% of the action and always includes the hot topics and latest 'big' match ups going down. Try it out, it could be helpful!

they ARE "special."

I think they are just fortunate to have just exactly the right mix- something like:

-- a good ratio of # of pool players to # of rooms to play in,
-- weather that makes them "closer" together in terms of lifestyle and temperament
-- a rather homogenous but egalitarian culture where league players and gamblers are not mutually exclusive, and where sharing information and events is not suspicious or frowned on
-- They may be "small- town," but they share a lot, bet regularly, and have a lot of big boy visitors

I don't know any of them, never been there, and my knowledge is limited to their thread, Wiki and demographics. It may be that we only get to see one friendly core group sharing over there, but I have also seen their little spats and I think they are way more inclusive than anything I'm used to.

...I just don't think my area could maintain a thread.

If you want your post to grow, create drama, that'll get dem bastards postin. lol

LOL Blah Blah I need a dictionary to read your post!

You are right though. There are several, lets call them factions of people that always seem to clash. We ALL play in a BCA/Valley league on Monday nights and by ALL I do mean everybody that will bet any amount of money and likes to mix it up from time to time. So by default on Monday nights every week, someone somewhere will be woofing.

You also have different levels of players, in fact enough different levels that people always can find someone to play if they want to play. There's enough history in this town that it is divided, all stems from years and years of competition I believe.

You also have a good mix of strictly league and tournament warriors here too that like to be apart of our community. It may seem like a war zone, at times it is, but at the end of the day it's just a game.

Plus people hear about AZ billiards posts and challenges and take an interest. They sign up and get in the mix. I think it's healthy.

PLus, only a very few players in Sacramento and the surrounding area have a computer.

And, for the most part, catch up on current events, when we see each other at the pool events (weekly and monthly) or the occasional action matches sitting in the rail watching.

Plus, there are not that many bar room players (casual and league players) that frequent the pool rooms in our area. But, we are starting to see more and more of these 8 ball players in our weekly events. This is a good sign.

BTW, Hi Blah Blah good to see ya playing on Wednesdays again.

I was beginning to suspect that you guys were one group of several in town...

Now THAT sounds like us- we're pretty strongly divided by room, skill level, game, even by the time of day when we play : )

Iowa: Where they grow potatos.

blah blah...Good post, with one exception. Des Moines only has ONE pool room...Big Dogs (I was just there a week ago today, taking a break from driving, and visiting my buddy Mike Athens). The rest are just bars with pool tables.

We might just be tooo factional, Tom. Most Sac poolplayers have computers, but they don't want to share online or... put it all out there on Front Street... : ) [see? I can talk poolroom too!]

You guys are getting a lot more barplayers because you're having weekly 8ball tourneys in a line tourney format. It was a very wise business strategy.

Glad to see you all last Wednesday, though, and it's always nice to see the new faces. But I can't help thinking of a great Louis song, that goes... "A Woman Is A Sometime Thing..."

Good point Scott. We have one stop shopping in des moines. If you cant get a game at Big Dogs, keep driving. You would need to go at least 2 hours (120 miles for you west coasties) in any direction to find any other serious games or tournaments.

I think there is a good core group of chatter boxes in Des Moines. Look at the posters, you'll notice basically the same dozen guys woffing at each other for this or that. Nothing wrong with that and I think the diversity of the arguments keeps the rest of us on the edge of our seats...this is our (AZB) Peyton Place and it keeps us entertained.

I only live a couple hours away and most of these guys know me. So you know I'm not being critical. Keep up the good work..it really helps pass the time.

I am glad they are wearing their feelings on their sleeves via AZB. They could all log onto their local league web site forum or another Des Moines based pool web site and have all the same arguments and diagreements as they do here, but how would somebody from Sacramento or New York City hear about all of this stuff.

Like I said, keep up the good work and I'll see most of you in Cedar Rapids next month or Davenport in April.

Iowa: Where they grow potatos.

Uh,potatoes?? I've been through Columbus Jct.,Iowa and the only thing I remember was the sweet smell of PORK!!!
I lived in Iowa City when I worked for the BCA and used to talk to Don McCoughey over in Des Moines quite a bit. I like reading the thread from time to time as it helps me keep up with what's happening up there. I miss the pheasant hunting down by Washington. Thanks for the thread, and keep it up!!

You really can't mess up a potato

..so i admitted earlier that I had to Wiki Des Moines so I could get a feel for the demographics.

It's a slow day here and I broke down and wiki'ed Iowa because I knew it was in the middle, but that was about all...

I learned that someone from Iowa is called an "Iowan" (NOT Iowian, Iowite, Iower, OR Iowthrapod...)

So for what it's worth, the Des Moines pool thread definitely puts both the city and the state on the map for most of us

Let me get this straight...out of all of the words I mis-spelled in that post (something like 10 of them!), you just couldn't let "potatos" go? LOL

You must have hated this guy:
