Fargo Challenge Matches - $20 a match or bragging rights!

Ok, things get heated on here all the time and people (me) tell other people to play some. :-)

But since we are all likely to be separated by distance and unlikely to be in the same space when we are hot to play here is my suggestion.

We match up on the webcam playing Fargo.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHj6KUw8xzE

Rules: http://www.pro9.co.uk/html/RulesFargo.php

I will match up on a real time webcam match with the following people for $20 a game. Or in the format listed below.

Lou F.
Mike Page (inventor of Fargo)
Craig Rittel
Oldschoolexpro
SJDinPHX
ThePoliteSniper
Dr. Dave

And anyone else who wants some :-) Come and get the lunch money boys.

We have to do it on a camera chat where both tables are shown in real time so we can watch each other's scores. Or on Ustream or whatever way works so that we (and others) can see the match.

It would be a lot of fun to see other people matching up this way for money or bragging rights. On RSB they used to have online Fargo tournaments.

I thought of a couple ways to do it to determine a "winner" in a match up where it can't be done in real time streaming. Two people match up and they have 24 hours to post up a video of their best Fargo game. The guy with the best score wins.

Another way to do it is two people match up and whenever one of them posts a video and a score then the other one has 24 hours to post a video and a score that tops it. This goes on until one of the players gives up.

In order to make it faster we don't have to play ten frames - we can play five or three or increase the challenge by a frame each time if there is a tie score.

Credit to Mike Page for inventing this game. (Mike, it would be cool if someone could find the rules to Fargo on your excellent Fargo Billiards website)

Also I said 20 jellybeans a session or bragging rights to keep it friendly.

Let's have some fun and play some pool.

Let's try this again ...

This sounds like a lot of fun, John. I'll have to get to work this weekend with my camera. I'm really looking forward to seeing who will post a video and who will put up big numbers.

Interesting challenge. Funny you should post this yesterday as I was JUST playing Fargo Pool with Mike Page IN FARGO probably as you were typing.

We didn't get to finish all 10 innings but the game is super fun for anyone who has yet to try it. It takes a little bit to get the hang of the concept but I'm looking forward to playing more of it.

I might take you up on your offer once I get the hang of it.

Sounds great Samm. I wish Mike Page would chime in here but I guess I am on his "I am not talking to you" list. :-)

I think it would be great to see more az'ers taking up Fargo and posting videos. We could just do short versions like 5 racks - max 150 points or 3 racks max 90 points.

Also for those of you who consider yourselves hustlers, you can post of videos of yourselves dogging it in Fargo. Just be sure to check the YouTube Guide to Spotting a Hustler to make sure you're not doing any of those things.

If I had a camera I would get in this although I believe equal offense is a better test of skill than Fargo.

Helloooooooo...

What ever gave you that idea?

I like the idea, and I'm in... Though I might need help on the technology aspect...

JB probably thinks that, because you're not as prodigious a poster on AZB as he is -- or, that you might actually have a day job.

[...Keeping straight face and biting tongue so hard, it hurts...] (Just kidding, JB.)

:D

J/K -- couldn't resist,

I thought about that but I don't think so. I think that the thing that makes Fargo a better test of skill is the fact that there is the rotation aspect AND the decision making as to when to go to it.

Equal Offense definitely simplifies the process but you won't get the same type of shotmaking and strategy as with Fargo.

It's usually not a sensible activity to try to guess what John thinks. John thought that the smiley at the end of his statement was enough to let Mike (and everyone else) know it was a joke.

Ok, so I went ahead and played my first full session of Fargo in like seven years. 10 Racks.

I can't upload the video yet because it's too big.

Here is what I am going to do to get this started anyway.

My score was 81.

I will pay $20 to the person who has the highest Fargo score which is also over my 81 who posts a video of themselves by Midnight Tuesday USA Pacific time.

To win you have to post a video of yourself doing all ten racks, your score has to higher than 81 and higher than everyone else who posted.

My wife is working all weekend, so consider me officially on a mission to beat your score of 81. I'm plugging the camera in now so I can get some things recorded tonight.

Just out of curiosity, what did you use as your indicator when switching between random and rotation? I don't want to set a big 2x4 on the rail like Mike did in his video ... any other ideas as to what could be used?

Edit: Just to clarify, any miss during an inning means that inning is over, correct?

I used my cell phone. I am on a mission to beat my 81 too. I have to buy some gloves for the workshop. It's hot and sticky in summer and was very difficult to stroke the cue.

I will probably try again tomorrow but I am not in the initial challenge against myself. I vowed that whatever the score was for the first try would be where it starts.

I gotta get the video up though. Because I am trying to use it to brag on CTE as well and so the very first shot which is a slight cut to the side I say matter of factly that I am using CTE and miss it! Seriously the irony is not funny and silly at the same time.

I did however manage to make a few nice shots using CTE despite the stickiness.

It's been raining all week here, and the humidity is brutal. I'll be heading over to my Dad's tonight to play on his table ... in his garage. I really hope the table and balls aren't a sticky, slow mess from the humidity.

Corn starch to absorb the humidity / perspiration

John:

When you say gloves, do you mean a pool glove or just work gloves for the shop thing? I ask, because I know you keep a pool table in the workshop, and if you're not normally a glove wearer at pool, you might want to try corn starch (instead of talc). I do have a pair of FingerSlides (from Cue-Z -- Nancy Cote), but I don't always have them with me. I do, however, have my talc dispenser filled with corn starch, and the nice thing about corn starch is that a very little goes a long way, and lasts a long time. It's very absorbent, and slippery. And it's not messy, like talc; it sticks to your skin better and stays there (doesn't smear on the table as talc does -- as long as you don't coat your hand with it). I just dab it on those areas in my bridge that contact the shaft of the cue, and that's that. Works great! Potato starch also works well, but is not as plentiful/available as corn starch.

Just wanted to share that with ya,
-Sean

Thank you Sean I will try that. It is brutal and am not a glove wearer normally.

I have a bottle of baby powder on my desk but it felt so sticky that I didn't think to try it.

@ 9 Ball Marksman - yep a miss ends the inning :-( hence the dismal score.

John, I'm gonna put you on notice. I played 10 racks of Fargo tonight, and I shot a 97. The thing is, I KNOW I can do better. I was dog tired and I missed a few easy shots that left me with low scores for the inning. Plus, it was my first time playing it, so I'm sure I'll get more comfortable with it as I go.

I don't have proof of my score, so you'll have to take my word for it for now, and I'll bring my camera next time. I hope each of us can post something into the triple digits within the week on camera. The only question becomes ... how in the hell are we going to get all of the footage online? The file is going to be enormous.

Well buddy I got a GLOVE now so it's ON!

Well, you can get an account with Vimeo - they have a 5gb per week limit which should be plenty. I have an account but my internet connection won't support the big uploads. It's free to you so feel free to try it.

I am looking for a Chinese equivalent to YouTube so I can upload the large files.

See you soon.
