Review: Mike Webb

This might belong in a different forum, but since people post their complaints in the main forum, I figure posting compliments is fair game, too. And Mike Webb went to great lengths to make sure my cue work came out exactly as I wanted it.

I have an early 90s Schon that plays great, but (1) there were two fairly large bubbles in the finish, and (2) I wanted a leather wrap. And I really wanted to have a smooth, non-textured and slightly gummy, leather wrap, rather than the usual style. What I really wanted was for the wrap on my Schon to be as close as possible to the one on my Hercek--both because I really like the feel, and for consistency across the two cues I shoot with. I went to Schon first, but they only offers textured wraps, so after some searching here, I went to Mike.

The initial turnaround was about two weeks (compared to Schon's 6-10 weeks), I got regular updates on the status of the work, and when I got the cue back, it looked perfect. But I was apparently not clear enough, because Mike had put a textured wrap on it -- though it was the least textured wrap that he had in stock.

So I sent him an email to let him know I had received the cue (which he shipped overnight at no extra charge) and that it looked great. But I also pointed out that I had asked for non-textured and asked if this had been the smoothest he could get. He replied that, while textured, it was much less textured than what he normally used.

Now for the good part: he offered to contact Joel Hercek directly to get leather from him, replace the wrap with Hercek's leather, and pay shipping both ways. All of which Mike did, and quickly. He got two wraps from Joel, then I got the cue back to him on Friday, 10/28, and I had it back in my hands with the new wrap on Tuesday, 11/1.

And as a side note, I've heard directly from Joel, and now from Mike, that the leather Joel uses is a real pain in the a** to put on a cue, presumably because it's soft, stretchy, and tends to fray when cut. So the extra work Mike put in was more than what a typical wrap requires.

Punchline: Mike does great work. His prices are reasonable, though not the cheapest you'll find. That's because you get what you pay for in life--with Mike, you'll get exactly what you want. One more thing: Mike declined my offer to pay more for the extra work.

P.S. Here's some pics.

Yeh...it might be a pain in the butt for them to work with and put on, but for us-the end user-it's outta sight because as you know...the leather Joel uses is THE SMOOTHEST of anything out there.

I have had Mike due extensive work at times, so much so that I refer to my McDermott as my "McWebb". Your assessment of his work and Mike as a person is spot on. His sense of responsibility for his work and your cue when he has it in his possession is over the top. Over the years dealing with Mike I think he made one mistake on what he's done for me and he corrected it immediately, well as soon as I got around to letting him know about it anyway.
Mike ain't perfect, but he's damn good.
Steve. <== waiting to bubble to the top of Hercek's list, by wish time I'll probably be retired and not able to afford the cue. :(

You may find one as good, but I dare someone to find a better, more honest guy / repairman than Mike.

The cue looks great.

Nice choice of wrap. I think I might go with MW to refinish my Scruggs. What's up? Haven't talked to you in awhile. Making a trip to DC soon. We'll have to play. Recognize the Avatar?

Nice avatar. Looks like Chris's, as seen from the top of the stairs on the way in, centered on the no-nine-ball action table in front of the counter.

Of course we'll play when you make it back -- *you* alway have action with me! Depending on when you come, the new pool hall (5 GC's, from what I hear) that's 2 blocks from my house may be open by then.

Where is this going to be located?
I live in Sterling VA and at times ride into DC to test new places to play while my girl-friend wants to try new items on a menu.
It works for me!

On U St. NW between 11th & 12th. Apparently owned mostly be the owners of Georgetown Billiards (never been there, but I hear they have purple felt. Ugh.) and possibly partly by the Bedrock Billiards owners (who also own Buffalo, Atomoic, CarPool, and others). It may be open by the end of the year, but likely later.

Close. It's actually the tournament room. Frank took that picture. FYI... he's FINALLY getting his Ed Young. So after waiting for five years (with Ed adding a ton of extra ivory) he's run out of excuses for playing under potential! Not a terrible wait though since he's locked into a good price. If you are at the same number I'll reach out a few weeks before I'm there. Say hello to your better half.
