Scheduling Conflict???

I was just on the WPA website looking at the calendar for 2011 and I noticed what may be a major scheduling conflict in the upcoming year.

http://www.wpa-pool.com/index.asp?content=cal2011

The World 10 Ball Championships in Manila are scheduled for May 9-15 2011

While the US Open 10 Ball championships are scheduled May 16th through 21st in Las Vegas.

The travel time alone is close to 24 hours....

Just curious if both these dates are confirmed or not..... it would be a shame to take away from either of these great events.

Dave, you gain one day coming back from Manila. In other words May 15th there is actually May 14th here. Conceivably they could fly out of Manila on the 15th (the red eye flight goes out after 10 PM) and arrive in Vegas also on the night of the 15th. It's still a problem for players because of the difference in going through NINE time zones to get here. It takes more than one day for the body to adjust to this. More like 3-4 days. Guys flying in from Manila will be at a decided disadvantage. Perhaps they will be given a pass to not play until May 17th. That would be very helpful to them.

giving anyone a pass to not play until the next day is just plain not right.
If you sign up for a tourney you should be prepared to play the first match.
If the promotors don't like it don't schedule tournaments so close together.

If i pay my entry and arrive on time and happen to draw one of the people coming in form PI I should not have to wait an entire day because of there choices.

Thats a good way to piss off new players and keep them from coming back.

Often times in big fields there are still first round matches being played on the second day. I'm not advocating holding up the tournament, just scheduling them for a late match.

A couple of other tournaments overlap too if the calendars are set as shown:

US Bar Table Championships (2/21 – 2/27) with the WPA World 8 Ball (2/19 – 2/26)

World 14.1 Championships (8/21 – 8/27) with the WPA Beijing Open (8/15 – 8/21) and Euro Tour German Open (8/24 – 8/29)

Finally going to the Derby this year. Doesn’t look like anything so far conflicts with that.

If you would rather take a forfeit over waiting to play your match against a world class player I don't really like your chances in your next round anyway...

What you fail to understand is the WPA doesn't seem to give a rip about any tournament held here in the states and the promoters seem to be trying to overlap with US events making the players have to choose where they go...

If they chase the points and the big paychecks they will have to be afforded later matches in US events so they have adequate travel time. Otherwise you end up with a watered down field and the tournaments here become less prestigious and less likely to continue...

There are apparently moves being made with a definite agenda. There is no way u can show me those overlaps with all the other weeks in the year available and make me believe anyone is actively trying to keep from stepping on anyone else's toes.... May even be the contrary going on....

i said nothing about a forfeit, they should never be put in the tourney if they are not there in time for it to start, there for never on the board.
Yes, there may be some stepping on toes on purpose, witch is sad.
There is never an excuse to treat someone different form another, they paid the same entry fee.
The U.S open will go on even without a few big names, it fills every year.
In fact you may get more players that think they have a better chance of winning without those said players.

And the U.S. Masters in Norfolk (a 100K purse) is March 1-5. I suspect some players will fly in on the 27th (World Eight Ball) and 28th (U.S. Bar Table). We will allow late starting times in the first round on Tuesday, March 1 for players flying in. The players meeting is scheduled for 10 AM on the 1st. Matches starting at Noon.

thats just narrow minded. Some guys play all over the world and thats all they do. They have places to be and it wouldn't be very professional to not accomodiate a player coming in from BFE.

Like Jay said many large events have first round matches going into the second day. There is nothing wrong with working the match into a later time on the schedule.

Its the same match. Its what some people call courtsey.

Its not like the players are calling up the TD 5hrs b/f their match to get the game moved. Its all done way ahead of time.

Lets just make it so the guys that travel afar to come not be able to come.

ITS NOT THE PLAYERS FAULT IN REGARDS TO TOURNAMENT CALANDER SCHEDULES.

Players have to play.....they got to eat too.....to me thats just obtuse throwing players to the wolves like your suggesting.

I think you nailed it. I think they have a grred tomakeit as tough on the USA as they can.
I understand the the thinking of the scheduling for the later arriving players and I understand the thinking of those who take exception. there are two sides to tis argument. i suspect some TD"S and promotoers lose some sleep over these decisions.
Getting the events here and the ample add on money is already like pulling teeth from chickens. I feel for the promoters, I feel more for the players. i can't imagine flying through 9 time zones nd tghen even giving a shit about some pool tournament.
The Hits just keep on coming!

Will you also be allowing Joe Blow Average Wannabe Pool Player a late start? Even though not playing in the Masters, maybe he's playing in his hometown APA league finals and has to fly in late (or maybe he just wants to save a night's hotel bill). Or sumthin'...
