new cue in new climate?

I'm due to receive a new cue (josey ) sometime this week. Keith/sherri suggested not to open the box for a couple of hours so the cue gets used to my apartment's climate first. Its gonna be hard not to open it but I think I should listen to the advice. Its pretty cold up here in ontario right now so there is a huge difference between the climate.

Is there anything else I should keep in mind so the cue stays in good condition? I'm just afraid of warping the cue because of the climate and because it is winter right now.

Thank you!

Sudden changes in temp and humidity are not good for long term stability, especially when there are metal and wood parts.
Metal exposed to heat expands quicker than the wood and likewise metal exposed to cold shrinks quicker than the wood.
An example is a cue in you nice warm house and you have no case for it, take it outside to your car and it is -7F. Then drive to the pool hall aout 20 mins away, heater warms up car and then the same shock again.
After 1 time it is highly unlikely to do observeable damage. But many times and it will happen.

If that cue has spent 3-5 days in the back of a truck in extremely cold temperatures, waiting just a couple of hours isn't going to do much. Remember that the box will slow the warming process, which is good, and that cue is probably cold right down to the core. Personally, I would leave it sealed in the box overnight. It's no guarantee, but then again, it won't hurt either. Sleep with it under your pillow if it makes you feel better. :D

Maybe a whole day then? I'm not sure if I'm gonna be able to contain myself and keep it sealed haha.

Hopefully its truck time is kpept minimal. It will spend sometime in a plane I know that.

Thanks for the inputs thus far!

It is about 7 degrees Celsius or (45f) in Savannah,GA where the josey is coming from while It is about -5 (or around 20F) here in Toronto. That's not a extreme change in temp is it?

It might be fun to put some kind of temp gauge inside the box and control the temperature increase rate. Then you would know what rate the air in the box is increasing in temperature. Still, the cue will be slower to increase in temperature. Also, the cue maybe relatively warm, if it sat overnight in a warehouse. It might be more like 10C already. Moving it inside and outside for increasingly longer intervals inside might be best. Since the epoxy will be fairly brittle, I would give it a day at 25C before hitting with it.

Have fun!

Hi,

I treat my billiard cue like shit. Leave it in my car winter, summer.

Does not seem to bother it. Go figure.
