It is with extreme regret I have to officially cancel the World Cup in Las Vegas. I want to take this opportunity to Thank the many people and players for their words of encouragement and dedication to the sport of billiards. The securing of sponsor/sponsors in the short time frame was not possible. All other cooperating entities were in place.

Sincerely,

Ermanno Scalas

USBA Pin Division Director

Best Billiards lv President

Ermanno Scalas, Thank for Posting this. At the same time sorry to hear. Its a shame for U.S. ,but maybe USBA need someone like Charles Williams [ Dragon Promotions, promoter of Queen of Carom and others ] to get them kickstarted and find sponsors.

I am sadden to learn the World Cup has been cancelled. Living in Las Vegas I know how hard Ermanno has been working to bring this venue to our city. From what I understand he had very little time to organize this event let alone find sponsors. I also hope the day comes that all 3 cushion organizations can can work together for the good of the players. I know this had to take a it's toll on Ermanno, please take a deep breath and know in your heart you did every thing possible to bring the World Cup to the US and the city of Las Vegas. Thank your for your efforts!

Wow, this is a hard blow for us. Very sad to hear the news. I was very much looking forward to attending.

I agree as well. Ermanno is a good man and he will continue to promote the game he loves.

Thanks Ermanno!

Good. Maybe they can use them to come to the next Sang Lee Memorial which will be approximately..... never ......since they refuse to come unless Michael Kang pays their expenses ........even though prize money is assured.

Dieckman>----the planning for a tournament of this nature must start taking place at least a year in advance, not just a few months , as was done in this case. No wonder it did not come off "The securing of sponsor/sponsors in the short time frame was not possible."....WELL DUH.
I was willing to donate a $5000 cue to the tournament as I did in 1999/2001/2003 to The BWA World Cups Bob Jewett sponsored and was trying to discuss the details with the gentleman concerned when he hung up on me. Is that any way to get sponsors ????

The plan was questionable, at best, from the outset. When Bob hinted at this in November, Mr. Scalas went ballistic and demanded an apology. When Bob went to Vegas and offered to help, Mr. Scalas was outraged that anyone would question his ability to carry this out on his own. Then came the demand for Bruce's resignation, and the "Jim Shovak's Lies" fiasco. Basically, Dennis, he hung up on anyone who tried to help

Now comes the announcement I had feared from early on, and the petty "resignation".

The guy has had his head where the sun don't shine from day one. I just hope this doesn't make it harder for others to try to organize a World Cup in the future. The UMB and the players are not going to forget.

Well, maybe we'll have a pin tournament in the future -- but I doubt we'll see a UMB event on this side of the pond, perhaps ever....

already bought my round trip air fare and made hotel reservations

i am disappointed but not totally surprised. what else can i possibly do in vegas?

Usba

Doesn't a World Cup event have to go through the USBA, if it played here?

With their experience in past events, didn't they know that Mr.Scalas couldn't pull it off in that time frame? Seems like they set him up for failure.

Yes, it does go through the USBA.

If you want to blame someone for setting him up for failure, then blame me. To accomplish this, I went over the previous three Las Vegas WorldCups with Mr. Scalas and pointed out to him the total expenses of a WorldCup (about $120,000 each), the difficulty of getting sponsors, the time line usually required for hotel contracts, the large number of volunteers needed, the expense and effort to support that help, and everything else I could think of during a day-long visit to his room at the end of October.

After this visit, I reported to the USBA that I thought that Mr. Scalas could make the event succeed based on what he had accomplished with his room, his insistence that the problems I pointed out would be solved in time, and the contacts he has in the Las Vegas area.

I also contacted two table manufacturers who made offers including modest (compared to $100k) levels of sponsorship. I also prepared about $30,000 in "angel funding" by contacting people who are willing to donate to tournaments like this.

What do you feel I should have done instead?

Bob Jewett,

You sir, should not have to take the blame for anything that happened to Mr. Scalas over his failure to handle this matter in a responsible way. You have done more for world class billiards players to be exposed to the United States than anyone in the history of the USBA

It is my understanding that you, and some of the Board of directors informed Mr. Scalas last year that this could not be done in the manor that he was wanting to handle the World Cup, and he became irate and verbaly attacked anyone that didn't agree with him. It also is my understanding he did not want to take full responsibility for major funding of the cost of this event, wanting instead for the USBA to accept that responseability, for funding that they could not afford.

The USBA is a great orginization, and I am proud to be a member, maybe we should be happy with what is being done for us here in the US rather than the rest of the world.

Sir,

Don't know you...But consider your organization essential in promoting billiards in the U.S. I have watched with amazement while you and other members of the USBA have argued, on this forum, about the direction, trials and tribulations of your organization...

Very unprofessional and unproductive, I'd imagine.

If this so, why didn't the USBA simply say no?

UNPRODUCTIVE?? So is it better to become complacent and just "accept things the way they are" ?? I'm sorry but that is for the weak minded that fear change. Bottom line is the USBA needs some major changes if we want to become a player in the billiards WORLD. But maybe I am wrong? Maybe we should be happy with the 500 - 600 members or so with only a handful of them that can really play the game. Maybe we're all happy with making a few billiards here and there and just talking about how great the Koreans and Europeans are instead of rising up and working to get OTHERS talk about how great WE are?!?! ANYBODY with a love and devotion for billiards can learn to play better with the right instruction. More exposure equals more instruction.
