Masters 10-Ball - FLOP or NOT ??

Let me start off by saying this is not a bashing thread, I love what Barry Behrman has done with the US OPEN for our sport. It is one of the greatest events ever!!!. I just have a few questions.

Why are there only 60? players at the Masters?
Is this an expected turnout or is it a super low turnout?

With $36,000 being added it seems like the players would want this event to be successful so other would be encouraged to host more events like this or so that they would do it again.

What happened?
Are there any spectators there? If so how many and is it enough??

Again, I am just looking to be enlightened as to what anyone thinks on this subject. I am not bashing anyone or the vent. I truly hope it is a success and will continue for years to come..

Good question. I have heard some players having problems traveling. So that might be a contributing factor. Maybe a conflicting event? Could be a lot of things.

The first year of any tournament can be expected to come up short of expectations. Many do not have a 2nd year. The difference here is Barry...

Like him or hate him you have to give him credit for what he has done with the US Open and what he is trying to do with the Masters. I would have to think based on the turnout of only 60 and him still adding 25k that he is committed to this event and we will see another one next year that hopefully doesn't bump up against Reno and the World 8ball championship.

We saw Galveston go 1 and done because of poor turn out and unreal expectations. When Barry started the US Open he had a field of 16 players and grew it into what many believe is the most prestigious tournament in the world.

The APA tournament is tonight so we may start seeing the spectator numbers increase. I'll keep my fingers crossed and post back tomorrow as to what the turn out looks like.

So flop or not? It's a great venue and the 60 players include the likes of SVB, Alex, Ralf, Hatch, Rodney and Earl... There are 2 $10 amateur events in the building this week... I would have liked the Pinoys and more of the Euros to be here but the travel time was just inadequate for them to get here on the heels of the World 8Ball..... The crowds so far are not here... If it's a flop it is only Barry who would say so since he will be reaching into his own pocket to cover the expenses.

For me it's not a flop because I am getting out of my chair and walking across the parking lot to watch Earl vs Gabe on the TV table... or Maybe I'll watch Souquet and Hunter..... Ooooor Archer and Mazon.....

The only 2 things I don't like are the push out 10ball rules which kill the great shot attempts and the Alternating breaks... So far no one has really been running out from their break consistently.

Later wording was changed from $36,000 added to *$36,000 added based on full field of 128*

Sign up never showed over 60 even though it's points event.

My humble thoughts are it's not a flop but most major events on it's first few years usually suffer with low numbers - that is given. Slow economy probably did add onto it's low attendance as well, but mainly due to the fact most pool players (pro level and serious competitors alike) have a full time or part time job to support their main lives. They usually pick out handful of major events to attend and save and pinch to make the events. I think many players just didn't have this event planned into their 2011 schedule.

Plus, some players play safe. They like to see how the new event pans out. Like to look at the payouts and figure in their possible expense to see if it's worth going to. Lot of players gage that they must break top 10 or so to break even with travel expense and potential money lost from job and such.

I'm not sure how much this event will add or pay out. But wish them all the success

didnt they do a masters before and it was organized by Barrys son?

There was also a problem with the payouts as I recall.

You are correct, sir. I believe that is why 'the son' is no longer affiliated with this production ;)

Think it went from 35k added, to 30k added, then down to 25k added.
Heard some pros were grumbling that the last minute money added changing wasnt thrilling

Short but strong field. Low attendance so far but will ultimately generate a large international television audience. Should be some great shows thanks to new HD equipment. One thing about Barry he's no quitter. This event WILL be back next year.

Almost every tour has just as many or more amateur events as they do pro events now. The days of stocking up on $500 entry tournaments with 50% or more amateurs is over. The top amateurs do the math now. Getting 128 pros to travel and pay $500 entry fee is not going to happen. The trend is larger amateur events and smaller pro events. The US has too big an area to have big tournaments with big entry fees on one coast. The un-sponsored pros and amateurs from the other coast won’t/ can’t afford to come. Johnnyt
