Awesome

Wish I could participate in this one but I have other obligations this weekend. I love straight pool and I know that Big Daddy's will put on a 1st class event! Even if you can't play, I encourage everyone to come out and watch the great action that will be there!

Hard to believe this tournament ain't getting much press on the forum with all the great players attending, but I did run across this in the news, so I figured I'd post it up.

Big Daddy's Billiards in Glen Burnie will be hosting some of the top pool players from the East Coast this weekend when it hosts the seventh annual Maryland Open 14.1 Straight Pool Championships.

The event has become one of the most prestigious straight pool tournaments of the year in the United States and for the third year in a row has been held at the 7954 Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard site.

Festivities commence with a player-guest reception on Friday evening hosted by tournament director, Peter Burrows.

The 40 player field of the top straight pool players in the country arrive Friday for afternoon warm-ups, check out the venue, the tables and equipment, and get in a few hours of practice as this year's competition will be fierce.

A few of the players who are expected to be among the field include: world champion Mika Immonen, winner of the World Straight Pool Tournament in 2006; Mike Sigel, six time World Pool Champion; Jeanette Lee, The Black Widow, who put on a great display in 2009 knocking out four of the tournament's top players; Bob Hunter of Chicago, winner of the 1991 World Championship; top Pennsylvania straight pool guru, Bob Maidhof of Drexeline Billiards; Danny Harriman, perhaps the top 14.1 player in the country and twice winner of the Maryland Open; Florida's Mike Davis and legend Charlie Williams. Past players also include Germany's Thorsten Hohmannand Grady Mathews.

Play begin Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m. at Big Daddy's Billiards, 410-760-1332. Admission is $10.

It is always a great event. I heard there was going to be a live stream but I have not seen a link yet.

Schmidt

John ran 100 and out in his second match on a tight siamond. The round robin is still going on. Zion Zvi is also playing well. Tomorrow is single elimination.

Schmidt ran another 100 out on Peter Burrows a couple rounds later. Archer, Mike Davis, Bob Maidhof, Dave Daya, Shaun Wilkie, Jose Parica I think all won their flights.

Action starts up again tomorrow with 9-24 place players playing at 10:30 with the winners of those matches taking on the top 8 players from today.

Lots of great shooting right up at close view.

Thanks for the exposure JAM! This story sounds like Peter Burrows "like to have" players at the event. Didn't turn out that way although all of those players have played in the past.

"Marquee" names this year include John Schmidt, Johnny Archer and Jose Parica. "Local" favorites Shaun Wilkie, Mike Davis and Ed Deska can certainly win this event. Veterans like Bob Maidhof and Dave Daya are also capable of the win. And New York is strongly represented by Danny Barouty and Zion Zvi. Hard to pick a favorite even after seeing Saturday complete!

Bobby was in Mike Davis' group. I know Mike won the group so Bobby was probably 2nd or 3rd and should be playing at 10 or 10:30 this morning.
