i keep seeing pictures of Corey's cues with short ferrules. does he make them this way, or are these someone else's made to fit? does he have his own LD thing going on?

I think most of them you see are his own shafts, but not laminated/hollowed out LD like your thinking about. As far as I know most of what you see are solid maple shafts with short ferrules. I have one and it plays great and I really like it, but his taper wouldn't be for everyone. PM Bamacues on here, he could give you more info.
Cory definitely builds his own shafts. He has perfected the shafts for the hit that he is looking for his cues to have.
In order to achieve that, he has his specific taper, the shaft is 1/2" longer (29.5") and the ferrule is 1/2".
Cory feels that the shorter ferrule provides lower deflection. He does not like to hollow out the end of a shaft.

Can't speak for Corey's shafts but I have all of my shafts made with !/2" ferrules. Nothing hollowed out but I just like the way they play. My Jack Madden shaft has a 1/2" ferrule and I have a Jim Pierce cue on the way with the same size ferrule. I feel that the deflection is a bit lower and I like the way they play.
