Hello all, my name is steve...i live in n.j. It has been 30+ yrs in the making but i was finally able to put together my gameroom....It consists of a bar, poker table, dart board, and just recently added is the crown jewel of what i like to call Steves Place a 1973 United Billiards coin op table.....I am no stranger to billiards. I did at one time have a Mcdermott cue (sold it for finantial reasons) and longing to get another...But after lurking here i see alot of custom cues being offered...i was wondering which is better? a commercially offered cue or a custom? or is it just a matter of preferance to the player?

Welcome!

Hey Steve,

Welcome to AZ. I'm by no means the "welcoming committee" chairman, just saw that no one had replied to your thread (unless they do so while I'm typing).

As far as your question, it's entirely personal preference. Some of the more "recognized" production cues such as Meucci, McDermott, Joss and Schon wrok very well for most players (Meucci gets a lot of grief on here). With production cues, you have very little to no chance of having a cue that is unlike any other (as in 1 of 1). The good part about production cues is they are generally less expensive than customs. Weights can be adjusted quite easily with regards to weight bolts, etc.

I started off my journey with a lot of production cues (Joss/Schon/Balabushka by Adams) and with added aftermarket LD shafts, they play just fine. In fact several of my production cues I don't ever plan to get rid of...

The I got the "bug" to start buying custom cues. They aren't always more expensive than production cues, but they definitely CAN BE! I buy/sell/trade cues all the time in hopes of finding that one cue that has the "look" of a cue that I like as well as the "hit" of a cue that I like. I've found several cues that fit the bill.

The next step would be getting with a cuemaker whose work you admire (both aesthetics and functionality) and work with them on designing a cue to match ALL your own specification with regards to the material used in construction, colors, sizes, weights, etc.

There are some production cues that give you the ability to choose different options...

I think of production cues as a McDonald's meal...everyone ordering a cheesburger and fries gets the SAME exact meal...and you get it right away...

I think of custom cues as a Mom & Pop diner meal...where you ACTUALLY can get it your cheeseburger any way you want it and it's made with LOVE...just not right away in most cases (yeah, I know "cheesy" analogy...get it...cheesy...okay so they can't all be funny!).

I hoped that helped a little at least....just wanted to ramble for a minute and say "welcome"!

Jason

Mc775,

Welcome to the forum!!! Regardless of what anyone tells you, only YOU must decide which cue to purchase. There are simply too many variables to figure into the equation (balance, joint material, style, shaft diameter, price, etc.) for somebody else to decide that for you. I will say this: There are so many good choices out there, you almost cannot go wrong.

My advice is to try out as many different cues as you can before you pull the trigger on a purchase. Do your homework.

Well you lurked for a while and jumped in anyway. Your either very brave or masochistic [like the rest of us]. Start at the shallow end and work your way in. Enjoy.
Moving on to your inquiry, I'm sure you thought you were asking a simple question that would get a simple answer. And you almost got it! Personal preference. But now you have another question. What is my personal preference? That my friend is the ultimate question. Looking for the answer [if there really is one], is where the fun is. Check em out. All of em. Shoot with everything you can get your hands on. My preferences have changes a dozen times over the years. I've settled[I hope] on a full splice hoppe conversion by Jack Madden. It has all the attributes I was looking for but if I hadn't played with all the others on the way I wouldn't have known what I was looking for. [ did that come out right??] Hah Welcome and have fun. Don

Ah, a new guest. If you want you can shell out a few bucks and become a "Club Guest".
Anyway, as to your question. Either cue will do fine.
Welcome to the forum. :)

well, the cielings are just barely 7' so to put any kind of drop cieling in would not work very well....in the process of looking for an alternative......most of the cans were collected on the job :)
