Welcome!
Hey Steve,
Welcome to AZ. I'm by no means the "welcoming committee" chairman, just saw that no one had replied to your thread (unless they do so while I'm typing).
As far as your question, it's entirely personal preference. Some of the more "recognized" production cues such as Meucci, McDermott, Joss and Schon wrok very well for most players (Meucci gets a lot of grief on here). With production cues, you have very little to no chance of having a cue that is unlike any other (as in 1 of 1). The good part about production cues is they are generally less expensive than customs. Weights can be adjusted quite easily with regards to weight bolts, etc.
I started off my journey with a lot of production cues (Joss/Schon/Balabushka by Adams) and with added aftermarket LD shafts, they play just fine. In fact several of my production cues I don't ever plan to get rid of...
The I got the "bug" to start buying custom cues. They aren't always more expensive than production cues, but they definitely CAN BE! I buy/sell/trade cues all the time in hopes of finding that one cue that has the "look" of a cue that I like as well as the "hit" of a cue that I like. I've found several cues that fit the bill.
The next step would be getting with a cuemaker whose work you admire (both aesthetics and functionality) and work with them on designing a cue to match ALL your own specification with regards to the material used in construction, colors, sizes, weights, etc.
There are some production cues that give you the ability to choose different options...
I think of production cues as a McDonald's meal...everyone ordering a cheesburger and fries gets the SAME exact meal...and you get it right away...
I think of custom cues as a Mom & Pop diner meal...where you ACTUALLY can get it your cheeseburger any way you want it and it's made with LOVE...just not right away in most cases (yeah, I know "cheesy" analogy...get it...cheesy...okay so they can't all be funny!).
I hoped that helped a little at least....just wanted to ramble for a minute and say "welcome"!
