What's your shot??

I'm sure a lot of people will post God-plans to run out. For me, I'd play the 3 just trying to come straight down table. I'm hoping to get lucky and crash into the 5, giving me a prayer of running out. If I miss it, obviously it gives me a great chance to play a good safety.

Diamond bar box, tournament, quarterfinals, score 3-1 you with a 5-4 race (you are the 5). Playing 9 ball. Whats your shot and/or plan?

CueTable Help

I'm not going to try the run-out....surprise, I'm still on the grind, Neil.:)
In this spot, especially when I'm giving weight, I like to over-cut the 3-ball
for the safe and try to carom the 5-ball.This opens the table for an out
and gets an easy safe with maybe a snooker.
I also liked it when I was gambling 'cause it showed weakness when I was
actually playing a winning shot.

'bout time you posted one of these, Neil, I missed them.

If it were me, I would have played the 2 differently so I could play safe off the 3. Since that is no longer an option, I play the safe off the 4 (it looks like the bank past the 8 is impossible).

If I felt real good, I would *consider* the aggressive shot, but have to feel it REAL good before I'd pull the trigger.

I would play the second diagram shot here. Except not so hard and hold the cue ball for the 4, 6 combonation...

Even if you hit it too soft and come up short fo the combo you will still have a good shot at playing a safe by kicking the 4 ball off the rail up table.

There are a lot of options or possible shots but if you dont wanna rely on getting a lucky roll I would highly suggest going for the 4, 6 combo

I can only answer that for me and im not the kind of player that can consider a bank to a carom as a high percentage shot. i cut the three in the corner go 3 rails back behind the 4 for a side pocket shot on the 4 that way if i miss position on the 4 i can play a safe at that point. If i get the position the 4 goes between the 5 and 9 in the side and a routine runout from there.

I like this thinking. Put the problem on your opponent.

I kind of like doing Mosconiacs post # 8 2nd shot except hitting it a lot softer to roll just past the side pocket. Then shoot the 4 around the 6 playing safe hiding the cue ball behind the 9. Speed is important on both shots.

I would shoot at the 3 and bring the cue ball either straight back down toward the 4 and 5 and see what happens, or play the cue ball down the bottom side of the table where I know I'll have a clear shot at the 4 and play safe.

I play Mosconiac's second shot, except I think I would try to hit just above the side pocket instead of below it. There's a chance of running into the 8, but that wouldn't be the end of the world, and I actually think it can be avoided with some left hand spin (which is going to be on the cb automatically from the first rail anyway). I just feel that path carries a greater chance of caroming the 5 and coming up with a shot, or having a safety in the event of a miss, whereas coming in below the side pocket could take you b/w the 8 and 9 and possibly snookered or without any chance of a safety.

I'm way too nitty to try to come straight down table into the 5. Loading that shot up with inside while jacked up over the 5 and 17 miles away just isn't my idea of fun.

It look like a distance of approx 5ft...does that make it better?

Oh, I guess it is a diamond bbox, isn't it. :embarrassed2:

But no, I'm still too nitty.

But on a diamond bbox, hitting below the side pocket may work. Those things bounce like crazy.

Neil,

if you re havin the advantage to lead i would always choose in this case a safety-especially in a team-match. The other guy have to show action-not you as the leader. If the 3 ball would be a very easy shot, i would perhaps shoot the 3 and then make a safety on the 4. HOwever- if i have the lead, i would not begin to be offensive in any case- just if i would have an open table.
